- Summer's here and it's getting hotter! That can make things unpleasant while riding your motorcycle. But don't let that be a reason to stop riding entirely. Shumi has 5 tips that will help you stay cool during your ride. These include being okay with sweating & hydrating yourself, using base layers, deciding when to ride in the day, understanding how heat affects your health, and finally, using appropriate riding gear. So arm yourself to beat the heat and go ride.

decathlon hydration packs are affordable not cheap.
as a legendary automotive journalist you have to choose ur words wisely sir.
i'hv been a fan of your podcasts from a really long time 👍🏻👍🏻
@@subhrajitpal1396affordable has been the polite way to say cheap in the autojournalism business for just over 2 decades now. You’re welcome to split hair.
In any case:
Cheap is my value assessment of the prices versus what else you can get.
Affordable is your value assessment of whether your income supports the purchase or not.
I chose very carefully.
@@shu_mar i got reply 😍
@@shu_mar Can you please suggest a "decent" mesh protective ridding jacket?
P.S. big fan of your work sire!

I don't have a motorcycle, i don't even have summers here in my place. I still watch to hear this man talk
Thank you Sandeep!
U should get a motorcycle then.. U will feel his words then
Absolutely agree...all his videos are wonderful.. clear and concise!!

This is how things should be explained to the point and no unnecessary long speech
Thank you Shumi for sharing
Thank you very much!
Lovely tips as always.... Thank you Shumi! One more thing I do, when I have to ride through hot summer days (say 48/49C), I wet a piece of synthetic cloth (or 3 necktubes around) and use it around the neck, evaporative cooling in the neck area is something which is really helpful and increases once tolerence levels for heat (it is medically proven as well). Of course if there is cool water, I do pour it on the jacket/base layer as well (while making sure I'm not wasting too much). Havent had much luck getting cooling vests.
Indeed. Neck and wrist are great places to use to cool the body.
Not a fan of cooling vests though. I’ve used two. Both got parked after a handful of rides.
i did 1000+ km ride on my himalayan in one day, Vadodara to Noida in peak 46+ degrees temperature across Rajasthan, Ofcourse ive followed the Shumi's 5 pro tips, but over that i did these steps
1- Start Early , before sun kicks in hard... lets say 11pm , by that time cover at least cover 40% of the distance, (i love to start at 3am - 4am)
2- try to stop only at fuel stations, fuel your bike and yourself (keep cookies, dryfruits with you) refill your hydration pack there, and also use washrooms there, your luggage and bikes are safe there. and yes Remove your Jacket, so you get a good 10 min ventilation break.
3- keep changing your butt position and your body posture every 10-15 min, this will allow air to flow to all the parts, and also gets better blood flow in your butt, wrists.
4- Poloroid sun glasses keeps your eyes safe from UV rays of sun, and also less stress to eyes.
5- Sing songs and groove.
I wouldn’t add sunglasses to my helmet. A piece of hardware added INSIDE my protective gear. I’d just use a dark visor. The rest is 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
@@shu_mar 100% Agreed Sir, now a days i have now added a tinted visor to my Collection. :-)
Train pakad lete bhai. Itna khatarnak ride nahi karneka.
@@TheAmitkumar2010 actually I was doing the spiti ride .. so first stop was Noida... And also I love riding... You won't believe this... After reaching Noida was not exhausted and did enjoyed dinner with family and had a karioke party ... 😊
This video is published just at the most perfect time ever. I'm planning a 4k kms ride from Kolkata to uttarakhand and this is simply the most needed piece of information for those who are going to hit the roads. Lots of ❤️ to PD
Excellent! Have a great ride!
😇
One thing that I like to do while on a tour is take a shower at the end of the day instead of the morning.
As soon as the ride ends in the evening and I check into a hotel, I take a cold shower. It cools down the body, refreshes you and you don't go to bed with all the dirt and grime that you've accumulated during the day.
This helps me skip a bath in the morning. I would simply wash my face/neck/arms and get going, so I can ride longer distances by saving the morning shower time.
Yes! I do this too!
Or you can shower twice.
15min nahane ka time bachakar kitna ride karlega bhai. Din main do bar nahale. Zada aram milega. Nahane main tax nahi lagta abhi bhi
I feel so much better about that wild month-long June roadtrip now. Thanks, Shumi and team PD!
You're welcome Abhishek!
And godspeed!
Cheers! Have a good trip!
Monsoon session needed ASAP
This video is so relevant in Bangalore right now. IYKYK
Ahahahahahahahahahaha
these tips are godsend
Thank you very much!
Shumi your excellent communication skills is really commendable.
Thank you very much!
Been using Cramster Breezer since 10 yrs now, very effective in summers. Also, have putting water on my head before starting. Good tips. Thanks Shumi!
These are what I call, “life lessons, that you need from time to time.”
As always Shumi baba ki jai 🙏 great check points.
Thanks TreeSir!
@@shu_mar my pleasure Sir 🙏
Excellent advice....😎 Hydrapac is the best thing for summer ☀️ I fill it with rooafzaa....and enjoy my ride.
Kolkata heat and humidity made me totally comfortable riding in heat 😂 However this is what i do : If your ride is in X hours, take a bath and get ready by X-2 hours. With the remaining 2 hours, drink water and keep peeing! I usually target 3 litres of water. And then carry two thermos flask (1 with ors and the other plain water) I prefer carrying flask over hydration pack mainly because it's necessary to stop and take hourly breaks (atleast for me) so i am not worn out.
If you’re stopping that much, flasks that hold water temps are supercool. I prefer hydration packs because I don’t stop and ride 3-3.5 hours at a time.
One thing that has worked well is that whenever I stop , i wet the bandana with cold water (even normal water would do) and wrap it around the neck ..as you ride and when the water evaporates it gives a nice cooling effect for sometime ...try out !!
Cotton! All these years!
Shumi droped the video when the Summer us gone 🙂
Amazing no? I come out with the video and summer leaves the chat
It's raining in here in Kerala. Get us some tips too

I live in delhi and leave for office around 10 am and trust even at 10 am in the morning the heat is really extreme...
You mentioned about a riding school you run in one of the older videos. Can u provide more details on it and how can one join.

Simple tip what I do is carry a stand by under garments pack the sweat one in plastic and keep moving
With baselayers, this becomes unnecessary
@@shu_mar for some this tip works well 😎
@@ganeshbharadwajshooter1913 I didn’t say it doesn’t. I said baselayers eliminate the need for it
You sweated a good to delivery this hot topic ! Thanks dear for your wonderful info 🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍👌👌👌
Thank you very much!
I had a couple of times heat stroke symptoms..... For me after loosing about 4 kg of water I start feeling a bit dizzy, and I know I have to top up with water/glucose/electrolites....just to be in the safe zone...
Wanted to say that if you ride fast you get cold fast, but that's probably the baddest advice one can give 😇.
Better have 2 sets of gear, one for the cold start and finish and one for the blistering heat of the day (at least the jacket).
Or invest in a good four season setup. But yes good advice!
This does not apply to Bangalore now.
It's rainy season in Bangalore 🤣
How do I buy that Tshirt ? Do we have a merch line-up ?
www.wanderlooms.com/collections/powerdrift
Yes @wanderlooms
You can get our merch here - www.powerdrift.com/merch
Perfect!
Great work. Great suggestions. You could also include some tips on what care needs to be taken for the vehicle as well. Can it be ridden/driven in the same way as its been done in the winters/rains?
Yes. Vehicles need service and fluid. But not much else to be honest
But it's already winter here in Bangalore.. Like 21 to 23 degrees.. 😁
Thank you. Sure the videos have helped me and my friends to ride better, more aware about our machines and in general traffic around us.
Thank you very much!
Super duper informative... we need more of this pls..
My summer ride starts at 4-5 in the morning , by the time sun reaches over head I am almost done for the day.
That’s usually my plan too!
Superb Sir...
You are soo good in narration, i never get bored watching you.. 😍😍

@@shu_mar Sir,when will the Simple One getting delivered iin June or not?
Nice one Shumi, its been some time i saw you with these videos. 🙏
Thank you very much!
But Shumi, sipping cold water in a hot body, is not it going to cause you soar throat and cough. Should not we avoid this hot-cold treatment and inspite drink normal water? Please suggest!
Myth. I drink nothing but cold water right through the year.
Shumi sir you missed keeping a raw Onion in pocket :D But thanks for the correct jacket suggestion. I was looking which jacket to buy for Indian summer conditions
Ahahahahahahah! Once onions become cheaper
Raw onion for what?
Mesh> gortex for Indian climate .
Thanks PD 💐
It does not feel like summer here in banglore lol.

Cool T-Shirt!
Thank you very much!
@@shu_mar So that just happened! 😶😍
Well...technically you should wear loose cotton clothes in summer as.....it's breathable..!🤷♂️
Not on the bike. On the bike cotton is worse than synthetics.
Very valuable n simple tips for riding. 👌👌👌
How to avoid pain in knee joints and back and the bumps in long rides?
A little bit of fitness (esp core strength) goes a long long way
#powerdrift after watching all the episodes I will be adding this in my LinkedIn profile. This is so informative 😅.
As always an amazing, relatable and 100% helpful piece of content. Can the next video be on the kind of medical kit we should carry for touring purposes contemplating on the god forbid injuries one can have..

Most important gear - Decathlon rain pants with built-in shoe covers :D, they never let me down... rain jacket with vents (they have overlaping layers) to not make one not sweat so much inside... (I grew up in Kundapur, 100km ahead, same situation)

Dont ride.
@@TheAmitkumar2010 did not asked you 😑😑
A little bit late the video is, the monsoon will hit the subcontinent within few days. Anyway could be useful in the next summer 😁😁
Ahahahahaha! You’re right
It is very useful as always but the timing is not great bcz summers are now at end
Only for some parts of the country. But I agree. We should’ve done this earlier
@Shumar...you didn't mention about cooling vests..
I’ve tried 2. They’re all in my cupboard unused. They’re some of the most expensive and least useful summer gear I’ve used. They’re not on my list of summer essentials.
Then you could have brought it up in the video that cooling vests did not work for you. That would have closed the loop in the video itself. Thanks, anyway
What summer?
Thanks very much for your inputs Sir. I can miss any other video on PD, but not this series and especially the ones which have Shumi. Can you please suggest some head gear for summer if any.
Just a good helmet. Nothing else is needed. Thanks for watching!

Isn’t it though?
@@shu_mar Yes sir.
Big fan of your work art.

Amazingly helpful content as always! Shumi can you please tell if the cooling vests are any good?
My experience says no. I’ve used two and they’re both parked for good. Baselayers and mesh produce better results. But I’m also more weather-resistant than most people so 🤷🏽♂️

Very informative video
Bangalore peeps: Is this some peasant joke i'm too rich to understand?
No. Just check weather reports in cities that aren’t Bengaluru 😂
adding a hydration bag on my shoulders can be tiring if I do a long ride, so can we mount it somewhere else? side bag probably?
What about gloves, trousers and shoes?
All the gear all the time. Mesh is critical to both jacket and pants.
@@shu_mar aye aye sir
Hey, I bought a base layer after watching your videos. Strangely I am feeling *less* comfortable than in cotton. At the end of an hour of ride the base layer was a wet as a normal cotton t shirt. Did not experience any significant difference in comfort. It wasn't even cooler.
Hey PD and Shumi, any suggestions for offline riding gear stores in Chennai/Bangalore? It's not that I don't trust the online ones, I would really like to try them before buying.
There’s many! Search online!
Very Good
It's rainy season, tips for riding in rain would be better.

Tip no. 6: buy a car with an air conditioner.
(Buy from a used car market if your budget is a bit tight)
I’m leaving the chat. Cars are useless to me 😂
What about the sweat that enters eyes?
What about gloves? Any alternative to Full/Half Leather gloves?
Nope. Full coverage is essential because when you fall, hands always go down first.
@@shu_mar No i meant leather gloves get too hot in summer, any other gloves that provide the same protection?
@@Spacenigga69 I disagree. Have used them exclusively for 22 years now. No complaints

Which bike should I buy right now I have Royal enfield standard 350 I want to start vlogging
@shumar - you guys would be testing vstrom sx250 already, may I get some early advice whether do I book it or not?
I want a bike next month.
My need -
- Comfortable upright posture with soft suspension since I have tailbone pain issue
- most city bumper to bumper effortless riding with twice a month highway rides of approx 200kms so 80-100 cruising speed
- at least 30kmpl mileage
Hey Shumi could you make one on engine break in? I cant seem to find any good videos out there

You forgot Sunglasses or a tinted screen on helmet?
No I didn’t. They’re not essential. And I’ll never wear glasses in a helmet.
Hydration pack is my single best investment for summer riding. Bottles just don't work, because I am too lazy to take the bottle out of the bag, remove the helmet and drink water, and then put it back.
Hahaha! That's one way to get around the laziness! :P
Being lazy makes some superb solutions come about no?
