Held makes nice jackets. I have one of theirs and love it. Only issue is that I'm working in the tropics and it's a bit too warm for that jacket most of the year.
I have a feeling that the Alpinestars designers got carried away with their boners, incorporating too many 'great ideas!'. I have hiking jackets with 8 pockets and their zippers, seemingly making the jacket more useful, but in the end adding too much, little used, complexity and weight. @@vijabe based on his video, I bought the icon mesh and had was a big fan of it. But there are a lot newer products and it would be nice to see something new for this year
There was a jacket made years ago from FirstGear which was effectively plastic chain mail. I personally crashed it on gravel at 55mph and was more than impressed with its durability having not worn through. It is also a giant vent since it is chain mail so it is very cool for the summer. I am not sure why they do not make jackets like that anymore.
@@robbackstrom3365 - One of the things I cannot stand about living in the middle of nowhere is that there are no shops where you can actually try these jackets on and feel them for yourself. At $450, that's quite a gamble to buy online only to find out you hate it. So I need to ask you: How does it feel to wear that Klim Induction jacket? Is it really cool in hot weather? How is your mobility in it?
@@vasprofessional1094 They fit pretty true to size. I'm 6 foot one and 200-210, and I wear an L. The induction jacket flows air VERY well. The mesh fabric is quite substantial; some might say it feels over-engineered. It's expensive but built to that higher level. It has that warranty where they will replace it for free if you crash the jacket, as long as you can prove it with an incident report. I can attest. Since then, I've got an additional Klim jacket, the Marrakesh, which is slightly less aggressive (smaller mesh) and super comfortable - it might also be a lower price.

Thanks for bringing the special gear stuff to our attention where the unique features would’ve otherwise flown under the radar. I know it kinda works against a gear retailer, but I’d love to see a video specifically for discontinued gear that’s worth seeking out for one reason or another.
I considered the airform jacket last year and still might for that mesh zipper and the look. I’m into the practical elements of the alpine stars jacket but, wow, could they have honestly made it any uglier? Maybe I need to see it in person.
I think the horrible styles/colors and absofreakinlutely outrageous prices are the reason they keep their own sales figures VERY low. It's the bendover without the reach around.
@@ljprep6250 Look around Fayetteville, NC at the rocket bike riders. They love that mixed up crazy crap. Half of the riders dress like the bikes. I guess there are not that many of us up-right riders that want some sort of style. Before Sportbike riders start hating on me, I own one of them too..
I've been considering the Knox Urbane Pro shirt as a mesh motorcycle undergarment to keep the armor tightly fitted to the rider so it doesn't slide around in a crash and so I can layer over top with nothing for summer, as much insulation as I need for warmth and a waterproof shell for rain. That seems like a smart way to go and the layers can be used off the bike when traveling, particularly for ADV camping, but now I have three other options to consider.
Love the self-reflective humor! Interesting change-up with the new 'talent.' Loved the Mario Bros. ending. Your videos continue to be quality content. Rock on!
Your content is superior to most on UA-cam. Two weeks ago, I bought Alpinestars Halo Jacket. I think that it should work for my type of adventure riding. Haven't tested it extensively yet, but for the price, it feels very good if "a bit" unconventional. Worst case scenario, it will be a perfect offroad summer jacket. Thanks, Ryan, for validating my choice!
How did you find the sizing? Typical North American or European? I looked at the Alpinestars site and the size charts show them to be small for their advertised sizes. I have to order online so want to get the correct size the first time if at all possible. Thx.
@@Mark1JT I usually wear European size 48. I wanted to try S, but could not find it anywhere, so I bought M and all the protectors are in their places. It feels a bit baggy in the middle, but the inner belt helps with that. Definitely more of a touring/American fit.
Imagine having literally one job, and having this much disdain for doing it. (This is a youtube channel for a retailer after all) I appreciate both Ryan for his work and FortNine for giving him as long of a leash as they have and not forcing unnecessary product review content. Now if only they'd expand to Australia.
I still use the first Alpinestar's leather jacket I bought in 2006... that's been 16 years. Just changed the back protection for a better one, replaced a zipper and now I also wear a Hit Air airbag over it. I doubt I ever change it, just love it.
I have always liked alpinestars stuff when they try something new, hence me having a mesh jacket that has a removable rain liner (forget the model name). It's ideal for touring around and if you get caught out it can stop a wet ride home spoiling the fun.
The order in which i am interested to watch your videos ryan : 1. The dialogue 2. Editing genius and content of review perhaps 3. Location when its done at or visuals/demonstration in the video / graphs and charts. Its like a reading a textbook in under 10 mins and going back happy because you felt good and not because you also gained knowledge.. kudos to your videos
I use a jacket for protection, clearly some think you are immune from a spill in summer ☀️, 1 seconds protection . Maybe a video on jacket standards would help and the real seconds you drag for at various speeds vs the available clothing ratings.
Yeah I had to rewind as I thought I heard '1 sec at 45kph' wrong... I get that a lot of falls are low speed, but that's pretty low. Personally, I'd rather sweat it out with higher protection focused on where the highest risk speed I normally ride at. You may only be on the highway 10% but that 10% will mess you up if you come off with an 'A' jacket. Maybe I'm missing how these work in real life? The exposed protection on the Astars also better be made of Teflon or when that grabs your going to get your limbs ripped off. All about probabilities, and only you know what they are but these seem to be more 'false sense' of security...or better than a T shirt. Which sadly, would still be an improvement, so I guess that might be the goal.
Your guys production skill and presentation quality is too good for UA-cam! I know it’s what your company is based on but please don’t limit yourself to just motorcycle and gear reviews! You could own UA-cam!
I foresee about a year on the road coming up, and I travel light. What can I say, it’s a carryover from my ultralight long distance hiking mindset. Being forced into riding in high heat with the same jacket you ride through freezing cold in? Asinine. Carrying two jackets? Asinine. I think I may have just found the answer. Fascinating.
I bought the Drystar jacket this summer. Love it. Found it in this exact video. Thank you for a very well thought out review. Worth every penny! A friend of mine got one aswell after seeing mine,
This video should've definitely included the: "Knox Urbane Pro" (it's an AA-certified net armour) In my opinion it's the best/most versatile upper gear a motorcyclist could have 👌
Well it's pretty tight fitting yet stretchy like a baselayer so I'd probably wear it under my Outdry Ex Diamond shell (imagine a baggier, double-thick Gore H5 or R7 Shakedry Trail). The AA-rated Urbane Pro MK. II/Pro Utility MK. II exists now as well, but it costs twice as much (~$300 before shipping/taxes)
Got one too and I dread the day it is too cold to wear it and I am forced to return to a normal jacket for winter. Also, I put zips on the inner pockets and a small zipper hood on the main one so you don't feel it on your neck when all the way up. I recommend both upgrades!
Knox makes awesome gear that I'd love to wear. Unfortunately with the actual currency exchange in my country any product from them will be insanely expensive.
Idk how many people go into editing and writing and producing these videos but every single person is awesome. Small jokes big jokes, non jokes - all too awesome
At this point, I'd even watch Ryan review golf...😳 And me, as a jacket addict, coming to terms with the fact that I have at least a dozen different jackets on my coat rack, now believe I need one or two more...🤔
Thanks for always putting out quality content. I’ve been watching your videos before I went into high school. I just signed my first salary contract 4 years out and can finally afford to get the bike I want. With the gear I want. Thanks for keeping us inspired with such unconventional jokes and knowledge.
It does make me smile that many motorcyclist think that their top end jacket some how will make them invincible because its "race derived" - never forget there are no lamposts and parked cars on race tracks 🤣- brilliant reviews and fantastic production - thank you F9 .
Such a good video, once again! Question, how do you stop all of these jackets from rising up in a crash and actually doing nothing to stop you from getting road rash? 🤔
One had loops into your belt (somewhat common) while many other zip together with pants (very common) though I did not see that feature on any of these. Finally, most street crashes are head first so the jacket will not rise up.
Somehow I feel like this is the soundtrack to that jacket: ua-cam.com/video/2GV_5dRrWH4/v-deo.html Opening up all those ventilation systems, one after another. Even the clothes in that video seem similar in style
I picked up an Alpinestars one-piece rainsuit and used it the first time the other weekend. I was pretty satisfied with the thing. Yeah rain drops still hurt at 50mph but I didn't get wet at all.
I received my Alpinestars Halo today. I like everything about it, except the main zipper, which is very awkward to use. I'll likely get used to it though. Time will tell.
About the AirFly, which Icon "invented": Held has had this for years and I love it to death on my Hashiro II summer jacket. Even with an airbag overtop it is soo incredibly cool in the summer, I love it!
Japanese KUSHITANI also uses the double front zipper with a vent. They also use asymmetric zipper that doesn't result in a jacket bulging out. Icon invented. . . sheesh
the creativity of these videos...😌 I think I've lost countless hours of sleep the past few weeks, after discovering this channel. Sharp, educational and enormously amusing.
Great review! Has me thinking tho, I wonder how hard it would be to make a center mesh panel like the icon, some mesh fabric and half a ykk zipper... Looks pretty easy to retro fit to any jacket unless the icon mesh has particular abrasion/tensile properties
I've also been wearing my dkr for 8 years . That astars is hideous so I'm probably going to get the new Raiden eventually. I wish they kept the patrol line even though it's much heavier than the Raiden line.
This has to be one of the most comical and informative product review videos I've ever seen. Sitting here laughing and enthralled like I'm at a good comedy club. Amazing.
Great review! But it still amazes me that jackets are made to be road camo with no or little fluorescent panels for visibility. Legitimate research shows flourecent vests improve roadside construction workers, and can be improved 20 to 40 percent! That's going to be saved lives and significant injuries. Much more than snake oil pads and fabric.
The problem is target fixation. High vis construction vests tend to be in clusters. The wide angle "mass" tends to prevent "target lock". Single High vis acts like the pothole you hit despite staring at it to avoid. I can't tell you the number of times I or a coworker had to leap out of the way because some cager was fixated on us.
@@cmdrgunslinger5955 target fixation can be a nightmare. Both for me and some cager, if i don’t look where i *want* to go, im lying in a ditch. If a cager fixates on me, im kissing his hood. My jacket and pants are black, but they have some decent reflective stripes and patches (3M, matte gray normally, but really bright when hit by light). I’d rather have to ride like i’m invisible, than stand out and cause some cager to swerve into me. Jacket is a Richa Infinity 2 and pants are Richa Colorado trousers.
I get your point, but there are 2 problems I can see. First, lots of people just won't buy hi-viz. It's out there, in helmets, jackets, pants you name it. I've seen the same studies you mention.. but I have a red\black helmet, a black jacket (with reflective piping to be sure) and a black bike. I'm not in any way the most stylish person out there, but I can't bring myself to buy a yellow helmet. Second, you have to wonder... if people miss the chrome and lights, along with the spectacle of someone sitting higher than the roof of the car on a somewhat unusual vehicle... will painting it yellow it really help?
Hi vis' might be great when you're a "human" on the side of the road, or even a human with a GREAT BIG FLAG POST in the middle of it... When you're on a motorcycle, you're no longer a human, just another obstacle that's smaller and less threatening than all the other moving obstacles... Nope... I'll wear the leather and guards to up my chances IF I take the spill, and then ride like I want NOBODY to have a clue I was even ever there. In any case, you can be THE brightest colored and shiniest thing on the street, and it won't do you a damn bit of good if the "other guy" doesn't even bother looking... ;o)
Replying to everyone here, The main point of high vis is literally in the name! To be highly visible. I know we all say we want to ride like we're invisible, but the reality is that you take for granted that people (drivers and pedestrians) can see you at so many points of potential interaction. Just think of how many driveways you pass every second without actually slowing down or being ready to do an emergency stop in time if someone pulled out. Or if someone pulled out in front from a side road, or an intersection where they were supposed to give way. Or even the dozens of parked cars you pass every second with the assumption that they are actually parked and not about to pull out. Think about it, you don't actually ride around with your fingers and feet ready on the brakes nearly as often as you should be if you were trully riding like you were invisible... But that's ok because people DO see us. They hear us and see us, but what's most important is that they see when we need them to see us. People often look only for cars in their mirrors and/or quick glances. By wearing something highly visible, you are trying to say "hey look at me! I'm not what you were looking for, not what you were expecting to see, but at least you know I'm here now so you don't have an excuse to pull out in front without care" If you just wear black, people will still see you most of the time just fine, but in those crucial moments where they're just having a quick glance, or looking through a dirty or foggy mirror for someone that isn't shaped like you... If your head light doesn't happen to be at the right height to catch their mirrors etc. As for fixation, well it wouldn't be an issue if more bikers wore high vis and it was just normal :P but really, the majority of accidents don't occur in situations where fixation is even possible to occur. As above, a riders biggest issue is being the wrong shape; a much smaller and less visible shape that also kinda looks like a pedestrian. Also, people will fixate on you just because you're on motorbike... Or if you have learner or provisional plates... Or if you're in something fancy/uncommon, like a Ferrari or trike etc. I don't think it's that big an issue tbh...
Thank you, Ryan F9, for persuading me to buy the alpinestars halo drystar jacket before even having my motorcycle license. Not only that, but also buying one knowing I won't be able to start riding till next year
Hey Ryan, I am about to head to Deadhorse Alaska this summer with my Honda Goldwing 2008 , will the Dunlop trailmax mission tire fit on the Goldwing? If not, what is a good tire for tackling the Dalton highway?
I'd really love Ryan to review some women jackets. or at least write the jokes for someone else to review gear for women, cause I know I can trust his judgement . It's extra hard to find anything that will fit and function alright if you're a women, no joke.
@@daphnedevi I actually find humor in all his jokes, including a duck or not. I recently watched a Double D bomb that had me chuckling. But I would love a Ryanna, the female equivalent of Ryan, to review woman’s gear every 8 years.
Yeah , most woman gear is for pillions, they don't invest. Some companies also go for pink it and shrink it policy. To fit my frontal twins and 🍑 I ended up buying some sales xxxl jackets. Back protection one sometimes finds in horse riding gear shops . In Europe I find Richa a good brand. Visit their factory shop in Belgium yearly. Good personal advice and lots of choices and styles to fit all shapes.
There is one thing here that freaks me out and that is that an A rated jacket (so 2 of them) only protects you at 30mph or lower and only on impact points and your back. There is 0 safety protection needed to achieve the safety rating on your front / chest. Scary. AAA rating for me every time. 😳
@@HenkJanPit agreed. I have a RST Track Tech jacket with a speed hump..... grade A only was most disappointed when I found out it is basically rated for use on scooters and not motorbikes.
I use a leather jacket for a everyday jacket and a textile jacket for when it's cold or hot. The textile jacket is baggier, lightweight and breathable, so I can add or remove layers according to the weather. The leather jacket is a snug fit, so only a t-shirt under it.

What jacket is it?
You might like the Klim Induction. They call that fabric Karbonite mesh. I can tell you that it crashes well.

The more ugly it is the more functional it is.
That is how I became the guy in a Roadcrafter riding a Versys.
there is an all black version which substantially reduces the ugly factor
I think the horrible styles/colors and absofreakinlutely outrageous prices are the reason they keep their own sales figures VERY low. It's the bendover without the reach around.
Look at their MX boots. Yellow, green, blue, red, black, and white...all on the same boot at once? (shudder)

Gold as always. The Gymnast simile had me in tears.
Love your reviews and videos so comprehensive and informative, I choose my gear based on your reviews and I've never had a problem with them.

@@Laruxo thank you for the information, from their size charts I would have thought they skewed to the European/slimmer fit.

I appreciate both Ryan for his work and FortNine for giving him as long of a leash as they have and not forcing unnecessary product review content.

Good lord I missed F9 videos. I don't even need a new jacket and I loved every second of this.
I would absolutely love to own that sweater but I’d never be able to afford it. Wonderful video as always!
The order in which i am interested to watch your videos ryan :
1. The dialogue
2. Editing genius and content of review perhaps
This is the only channel I actually want to see long videos of, please keep them no matter what youtube does about shorts

This video should've definitely included the: "Knox Urbane Pro"
(it's an AA-certified net armour)
In my opinion it's the best/most versatile upper gear a motorcyclist could have 👌
Well it's pretty tight fitting yet stretchy like a baselayer so I'd probably wear it under my Outdry Ex Diamond shell (imagine a baggier, double-thick Gore H5 or R7 Shakedry Trail).
I have a knox jacket that is kinda like that, but it's only a jacket for the hot summer. The sensation of the ventilation feels pretty good though.

It does make me smile that many motorcyclist think that their top end jacket some how will make them invincible because its "race derived" - never forget there are no lamposts and parked cars on race tracks 🤣- brilliant reviews and fantastic production - thank you F9 .
I loved the "Super Mario" Select-a-jacket skit at the end. 10 points!
Such a good video, once again! Question, how do you stop all of these jackets from rising up in a crash and actually doing nothing to stop you from getting road rash? 🤔
They have loops or zips that attach to your belt on your pants.
One had loops into your belt (somewhat common) while many other zip together with pants (very common) though I did not see that feature on any of these. Finally, most street crashes are head first so the jacket will not rise up.
I loved the intro poses, and the references throughout killed me. 😂🤣😂
Love it as always although the AStar is $400 because it's butt ugly.
Seems to me that Ryan is more concerned about function.
it comes in all black too, which looks significantly better. i imagine he bought the disgusting looking one for the visibility

About the AirFly, which Icon "invented": Held has had this for years and I love it to death on my Hashiro II summer jacket. Even with an airbag overtop it is soo incredibly cool in the summer, I love it!
Shhh! Americans are blissfully unaware of Held. Don't tell them about what they can't have (apart for Held gloves).
Tucano Urbano too, in a jacket who's thermal liner is a jacket in its own right unlike every other manufacturer on the planet.
Japanese KUSHITANI also uses the double front zipper with a vent. They also use asymmetric zipper that doesn't result in a jacket bulging out.

the creativity of these videos...😌 I think I've lost countless hours of sleep the past few weeks, after discovering this channel.
Your jokes are getting even smoother and better than the already great archive of same.
I've also been wearing my dkr for 8 years . That astars is hideous so I'm probably going to get the new Raiden eventually. I wish they kept the patrol line even though it's much heavier than the Raiden line.

The Alpinestars Halo is innovative but its design lines do leave a lot to be desired.
In any case, you can be THE brightest colored and shiniest thing on the street, and it won't do you a damn bit of good if the "other guy" doesn't even bother looking... ;o)
Replying to everyone here,
The main point of high vis is literally in the name!
I'm not what you were looking for, not what you were expecting to see, but at least you know I'm here now so you don't have an excuse to pull out in front without care"
If you just wear black, people will still see you most of the time just fine, but in those crucial moments where they're just having a quick glance, or looking through a dirty or foggy mirror for someone that isn't shaped like you...

There is one thing here that freaks me out and that is that an A rated jacket (so 2 of them) only protects you at 30mph or lower and only on impact points and your back. There is 0 safety protection needed to achieve the safety rating on your front / chest. Scary. AAA rating for me every time. 😳
Yeah, I really like not having any road rash when I go down, but that double A sweater looks like a real treat for city riding
Indeed, 1 second of abrasion resistance at 28mph/45kph means it shouldn't even be considered for motorcycles. Good for scooters/mopeds at best...
@@HenkJanPit agreed. I have a RST Track Tech jacket with a speed hump..... grade A only was most disappointed when I found out it is basically rated for use on scooters and not motorbikes.
