  • Midwest panel builders midwestpanels.com is owned and operated by tag team partners Steve and Adam O’Connor. They also happened to be father and son. Both are pilots, and something they enjoy doing more than flying is building the avionics panels for airplanes.
    Steve first became a commercial pilot where he taught people how to fly airplanes. Then he later got into helping people build their airplanes. His son Adam was always good with electronics and tingling with flight simulators. One year they both built a full cockpit of a Boeing 737 flight simulator. That’s when the light bulb went off and today, they’ve turned that passion into a full scale aviation business.
    If you’ve been following the Mojosling TSi build videos, you know that I was in Michigan recently at Midwest panel headquarters. These guys are also building the custom panel which will go into the Mojosling. It’s been fascinating to see some of the work they do. More than just panels, what you’ll appreciate most about Steve and Adam is that they’ll work with you as an airplane builder to create some pretty cool sophisticated functions for your plane. For example, I wanted a push engine start button (push to start) and I wanted one with a key fob or keycard for an additional layer of safety. This is not something typical in general aviation.

    I thought for an Experimental aircraft the Experimental placard had to be posted where it was visible as you got into the aircraft. I know up on the instrument panel would take up a large area but down on the throttle quadrant would almost be oblivious to most people entering the aircraft if the missed the large letters outside! Lol... beautiful panel work guys. They have built a great business model. I would like to wish them all the success in the world!!

      John Paul Lafferty it’s visible to the passenger and that is the only requirement.

    Will your panels still function under EMP?
    Just kidding...got a chuckle from your solar flare story.

    Awesome story and thanks for sharing, what courses or qualifications do you need to work in the experimental avionics industry?

    It seems that you're focused on the Sling designs. Do you offer panels and wiring harnesses for the Van's designs as well?

    • @MidwestPanels
      @MidwestPanels 4 роки тому

      E. J. Washington we can but it won’t be our full modular design. We would rely on the builder for component placement and measurements.

    Are you only doing experimental? I have a PA-28-200 that I want done as I’ve done all new avionics. But still have the 1974 feel. Thanks

    Are you strictly Garmin, or will yo do a Dynon panel and harness?

    • @MidwestPanels
      @MidwestPanels 4 роки тому

      Steve Heuser we can do Dynon but with the loss of features and customization we get with Garmin, we will always try to recommend their setup.

    It's somewhat interesting that you can build your own aircraft but it's terrible that you have to. Imagine if the only way you could get a Tesla Model 3 was to spend a year building it yourself at the factory and having to connect with a lot of companies to get all the pieces together and then have to pay 200 grand for it plus travel and living. That's not a good thing, that's a symptom for aviation.
    If an inspector can take a quick look at a homebuilt and declare it fit for flight, why can't an FAA guy take a little longer with a design and say it's fit for mass production.

    • @retiree1033
      @retiree1033 4 роки тому

      Why terrible Dan? There are two main reasons for building from a kit, one is to save money and two is for the sheer sense of accomplishment of building your own. Their aircraft are available as a kit or ready built if that's your thing. If I had the means I would jump at the chance to build my own aircraft but funds and health are against me these days. As far as aircraft inspection goes, the inspectors take a more than a cursory look at any aircraft before first flight. If you think that a passed design is sufficient for safe operation you're mistaken. Approved methods have been known to deviate from to accommodate manufacturing convenience.

    • @DanFrederiksen
      @DanFrederiksen 4 роки тому

      @@retiree1033 It's 161k for a quick build kit without travel and accommodations so how much are you really saving...

    • @zutrue
      @zutrue 4 роки тому

      You are saving a lot. And learning plus accomplishing even more. And at this point there aren't very many other options. That is
      just a simple, but indisputable, fact!! Now you can talk it up one side of the
      street and down the other. But the fact of it will remain constant.
      The End.
