I'm a retired Major US Airline Captain with over 31,700 flight hours Worldwide. My daughter wants to be an airline pilot, therefore, I discovered these video's on my feed. I was spell bound and was amazed at Dr. Tina Srivastava's simple but realistic approach to teaching. I have learnt a few things in this aerodynamics lecture for private pilot's that no one had ever explained in such thought provoking manner! Please keep up the excellent work Dr. Tina Srivastava, thanks for enlightening me to aspects of Aerodynamics which I was unaware of. I also want to thank MIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston for airing on UA-cam over 25 video's reference private pilot flying totally free of charge to the World!
I got my Ph.D. in fluid mechanics and am happy to see someone finally correctly explain how airplanes fly. As she explained, the correct reason is not complicated at all, as anyone who has ever held their arm and hand out of a car window knows.
Thanks for sharing. May I ask why you decided to specialize and get a PhD in that field? Abd how donyou deal with all the math and not get bored with it?
well well well mr. dr. you better read Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators and you will not only be humbled very quickly but you will also realize this MIT course is actually scary...

Yeah, but, this isn't the 5th grade. These are adults of drinking age. Something is wrong here. Does she think she's talking to the learning impaired? Perhaps so. There have been complaints about the readiness of college entrance students. Standards have been eased. This is not exactly advance education. These are our future engineers? No wonder corporations want foreigners to fill their jobs openings. "Who has build a paper airplane before? Raise your hand."
@@mu99ins Well the lady giving the lecture IS a foreigner (Dr. Tina Srivastava) and looking at her profile she seem more than qualified to explain the subject. Richard Feynman also used very simple words to explain things. This is about picturing the reality of things before diving into the theory. "Lecture N°2" A mistake that many do is to use all their vocab where it's not necessary. She putting everyone on the same page before going further. I understand physics from my own observations, then I relate the formulas to it. Playing with paper planes is part of my understanding of aerodynamics in it's very core. So I disagree with you respectfully.
@@Platypus_Warrior - You misunderstand my comment. I am not questioning the professor's qualifications. I am not saying the words are simple. The approach is tenative, as if the students were fragile as grade schoolers. The information flow is slow. If this was a class for English students, I would allow for the slow flow of information, but not for engineers. The students won't be just competing against other American graduates. American corporations prefer foreign graduates.
@@mu99ins This is definitely not a lecture for egineers. This lecture was part of a workshop for students from all faculties who want to prepare for the private pilot FAA test.
I do love the fact that people have this resource for gaining knowledge on almost any subject that interests you. This is the new revolution in learning that will eventually lead to certification tests to get credit for off campus learning for all.
Unfortunately you do a lot of the hard yards in workshops / doing problems / reading textbooks / etc, MIT education by youtube video would be cool, and don't get me wrong I'm all for this content, but there's a difference between a getting a degree and watching a set of lectures
16:20 Show them a picture of a racing car and asks them "what is this a picture of?" Really? Is this part of a test or something? Just explain what needs to be explained, don't try to interact in a patronizing fashion just because you like to talk to people that way and MIT doesn't seem to check on those types of behavior. Just teach what you have to teach. That is your job! Not asking silly stupid obvious questions! And criticize students for not playing the kindergarten's game.
After 30 min uninterrupted watching I realize I am an IT professional and these are no way helping me to pass cloud certifaction scheduled this years ....kudos to the instructor for holding me back for so long. love it. ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
I'm so jealous to not have ever had the possibility to have a teacher like her ! I was rising my hand to answer because I was too deep into the understanding that I forgot I am the other side of the desktop, you caught my focus for the whole hour. Anyway YOU ROCK GIRL !!!!! Thank god UA-cam exists and thank you to share easy understandable lessons for everyone!
One of my experience at the MIT class is there is always someone answering instructor's question no matter how difficult it is. It is how it goes at MIT.
I dont fly aircraft or plan to fly aircraft and have no intention of ever being an Aerodynamicist, but I just sat glued to this for the full video! That woman is extremely good at getting the information across!
If I had a professor like her, I would have gotten a better understanding of the world. Kudos to the level of clarity with which you have delivered this lecture.
The Internet is a platform as a source forward you can learn from or have information from. As an information/communication platform, as a source you can use for that purpose, nothing else. Kind regards.
As a DPE who gives CFI checkrides and find appilcants have a difficult time explaining these principles. I will pass your lecture along to Flight Instructors preparing their students for CFI practical.
So My question is that why not parachutes are fitted in air planes so in accidents type of scenario parachutes deploy to save lifes any aeronautical expert plz answer that...thx
I am not an expert, but I know this is already in use for some small, low speed planes. In a big passenger jet the speed is too high, so the parachute could not be deployed properly
Just loved watching the lecture. I have a statistics exam some days later and was searching for a relevant video. See, where I clung to! I ended up at 72 minutes. My love for flying bodies brought me up here and finally, the love for the method of her teaching held me till the end.
I know nothing about flying. However, after watching this presentation from start to end, I now have a practical knowledge of the principles of flight. Thank you for posting this video on UA-cam.
"...after watching this presentation from start to end, I now have a practical knowledge of the principles of flight...." No you don't - and neither does the lecturer...
She doesn't know what she is talking about and explains most things about an airfoil wrong, she even draws the basic airfoil wrong with too sharp of a chord.
Literally went from “what’s a fuselage?” to “characterise the viscosity of the lift with turbulence of the propeller in the photosynthesis of the leaf” in the space of 1 hour
I have done a lots of maths in this subject but perhaps, what makes this lecture exceptional is the the 'physical feel' what the instructer gives.. Everyone must see it...

I'm a full time aerospace engineer working on propulsions and I still watched majority of it. I just love airplane talk even if I already know it haha. Plug people explain things differently so I like hearing how people take on the subject
I'm a molecular biologist too, AND a pilot, aircraft designer and builder and experimental test pilot. And this lecture is already disappointing. I wouldn't tell anyone to NOT watch, but I would urge them to ALSO build and fly model airplanes- and I don't mean fancy radio controlled models- I mean 1) start with balsa gliders and work your way up to 2) rubber band powered airplanes. By the time you figure out how to trim these models against the offsetting propeller effects, you'll know more than 80% of the pilots out there. (I will say that this lecture is better than most- the real problem is that it's tailored to a naive audience that should have been handed those balsa gliders FIRST...) As an example of her "equal transit theory" debunking inadequacies, she should have pointed out that "curved on top" is clearly not the reason for flight if those same airplanes can fly UPSIDE DOWN.
I wish my school had this quality teachers. Most of the professors these days cannot even speak English. She has very pleasant presentation skills , they come to her naturally, wow , no words to describe, impeccable skills !
Hello Teena, I am 50 years old housewife and since childhood I just keen how to fly plane😂. Suddenly today i watched your lecture on. I m very happy. You teach so simpl easily.... I m enjoying ... To know the science of how to fly the plane.... Thank you for making the video... And even learning english the way you pronounced....🙏🙏🌹🌹
I've watched 3 of this MIT videos. Maybe I should have gone to school here because these seem to hold my attention 1000 times more than when I was in school. These lectures have been AWESOME!!!
I love these lectures.❤️ I dream sitting in lectures like this and exploring how world works . Thanks for giving me an opportunity to get the same experience as a MIT student
Yes, a good friend of mine, Cambridge graduate, once began to explain aerodynamics to me mathematically. Then he saw my blank expression and drew a few diagrams showing airflow and arrows and all that.
@@techtravels401 That's what he's saying. If the teacher explains then the student can try to understand. People are not dumb just because they are not taught properly.
1:08:52 The younger generation is the video/tech generation so lack of windows may not be a problem if you use the flex screen technology to make the whole of the interior like an onmimax theatre. You can show nearly a 360 degree view of the aircraft as it is on the ground or in the air.
I am a Biotechnologist, and have no technical understanding of the aerodynamics and design aspects, but I stayed on till end of the lecture. All the credit goes to Tina srivastava for her good teaching skills.
But she is very slow in explaining I am pretty sure that se will be way faster after some lectures Or in the last few lectures in the semester They all do it slow at the beginning the just slap you with a massive content equivalent to 3 lectures in 1 hour and the excuse is that we are late It is you fault not ours! Sorry I was angry and I felt good after writing this😅
@@philipmartin2919 The aircraft has mass. According to Newton's law of gravitation, it experiences a force directed towards the center of the earth proportional to its own mass. Colloquially this force is referred to as weight. For an aircraft close to the surface of the earth the force due to gravity is equal to m * g where m is its mass and g is the acceleration due to gravity. The net force on an aircraft traveling at constant speed and altitude is zero.
I started watching these lectures because I want to be a aerospace engineer. I am 15 and my English is like B2 level, even i can understand her words and the physics principles that I didn't learned yet at school. Thank you so much.
A tiny nipick here - while large surface on the rear of the race car is colloquially called a 'spoiler' they are in most instances, actually a wing that creates downforce. If they were just a 'spoiler the drag penalty would be too high. Modern race cars have carefully shaped wings that can be adjusted to vary downforce depending on the track to improve cornering. A spoiler on an aircraft does actually 'spoil' the lift and as a result can be used symmetrically to decrease airspeed or non-symmetrically for roll control.
You are SPOT on... fundamental difference between a Spoiler and a Wing is one creates parasitic drag (spoiler) while sticking up in the slipstream, and the other (the wing) produces induced drag by producing "lift" upside down. Both produce downforce but in different ways. Indycars, F1 cars, IMSA DPi and the car @17:17 picture all have WINGS. A NASCAR stock car has a true Spoiler similar to those used on Aircraft. Spoilers on Aircraft when used as lift dumps 1) loss of altitude without increase Airspeed, or 2) on touch down, kills lift to allow the full weight of the airplane to sit on its wheels for better braking. Same for NASCAR, the spoiler kills the lift the car body produces allowing the car's full weight to sit on the track for better traction. But as you clearly pointed out Wings actually produce upside down lift called downforce. I'm surprised that MIT instructors never made that connection between cars wings and the horizontal stabilizers on tail of the airplane which like on the car are upside down wings, producing downforce.
@@ILSRWY4Spoiler on the back of a road car like a hood on a hatchback is a spoiler, it spoils the laminar flow, which AFAIK paradoxically decreases drag.
The female professor is awesome. Her explanation was super clear and easy to grasp. And that male professor really needed to go to the bathroom towards the end of the lecture.
In order to answer the question at 1:01 where the question asked was, why doesn't the corkscrew effect cause the aircraft to roll?! Tina did give the correct answer. In order for it to make more sense, I'd add that the backward flowing air from the propeller flows along the body of the aircraft passing along the inner part of the wing (Part of the wing closer to the body) and thus doesn't have great effect on the aircraft due to the fact that Work done ( Force times Distance) isn't that much of a high figure as it is closer to the fuselage/body, which is the center, of the aircraft. However, when the backward flowing air strikes the tail of the aircraft, the Work done is significantly greater due to the increase in distance between the point where the work is done and the center of the aircraft, even though the force might be almost the same. (Work = Force x Distance) In conclusion, there might be a really tiny rolling effect on the aircraft but it won't be significant to cause the aircraft to actually roll. On the other hand, the corkscrew effect on the tail of the aircraft will cause a major effect on the stability of the aircraft. Interesting Fact: This is also why some aircrafts have their rudders' original position tilted slightly towards the right (Right Rudder) [ aft facing forward ]. This is usually set up by the maintenance crew at a known angle in order to avoid major stability issues faced by the corkscrew effect and thus make flying safer & easier. Feel free to ask any questions! :)
One of the best lectures I have ever taken through my life so far! And, this is for free!!! Now I realize I have been just a moron paying several thousand dollars and ended up just wasting my precious time. I suggest every teacher who are not as good as this Indian girl should pay their student for their time and for his/her own teaching practice opportunity.
In my subconscious I heard her voice and it felt right waking up this class. What I was watching before snoozing isn’t closely related but I stayed through the class, I believe I learnt something.
There is a misunderstanding. If there is a smooth steady flight, their lift is equal to the weight and thrust is equal to the draft. Not has to exceed, but be equal. Only while changing velocity or altitude do these forces exceed one over another.
The presentation is absolutely adoring and great. At some points I am not entirely sure if they (both) give intentionally short and simplified answers or if they in fact don't really have the answer. Most prominent this was on the question on the origin of the p-factor, none of them mentioned the asimetrical angle of attack on the propeller as the reason for the asymetrical thrust creating a force with a line of action right to the center of gravity, resulting in a momentum leading to a left side yaw....
Most race cars today, atleast the ones in the formal 1, 2 and 3 generate the bulk of their downforce not with the wings, but with how airflow is directed under the chassis and let out through the rear diffuser. But of course, what she said definitely holds true for a regular car with/without spoiler.
They sort of turn the entire car into an upside-down wing too. They establish a high pressure region at the leading edge (nose), which causes an acceleration of air down the concentration gradient, to the rear. Higher velocity: lower pressure, so downforce results. So maybe considering the front spoiler and rear as "flaps on a wing" is a better analogy?
The proximity of the bottom of the car to the race track creates a suction that helps hold the car down as air passes beneath the car. The cleaner the flow of that air, the greater the downforce. One reason you see the bottom of extremely fast race cars with fully sealed chassis bottoms.
I can die in peace now because this is the first video I've seen that FINALLY gets it right. The only thing missing is explaining why air over the top of the wing tends to follow the surface of the wing which is the Coanda Effect. That also contributes to lift due to conservation of momentum.
thx, she didn't mention "Coanda Effect" thats what i'm searching for. she only mentioned Bernoullie low p -> high v , and that on top there is this effect, but not what is creating the lift then exactly.
@@CHANGUTHAKUR I've taken the FAA exam. The irony is that the study text for the exam says it's Bernoulli Force that is the primary source of lift which is incorrect.
Future AE engineer here and I watched the entire lecture. I'm in love with your channel and all your videos. I didn't know about the FAA pilot's handbook until I watched this video. I downloaded it and now I'll read it all. Thank you !
Dr Tina Srivastava has very natural teaching style, she also has a command on the subject as an on the english language as well , blended with her confidence make this lecture a memorable.
Min 41:00 correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure because your flaps can increase lift generated. Using your flaps on takeoff can allow you to become airborne in a shorter distance. A pilot performing a short field takeoff typically has his/her flaps down to generate more lift to clear obstacles in a shorter distance than they would in a clean configuration.
My 1st day in ground class for commercial pilot license course has been excited, tense and unable to concentrate, due to dream come true. this video made me to remember those days.
Why it is recommended to me ..I mostly watch reality TV, movies and songs on UA-cam and deliver food for living ..I am never planning to build any aeroplane to deliver my Pizza
41:53 Flaps on takeoff also allow an aircraft to get into the air sooner (not necessarily faster) because of things like short runway or contaminated runway (slush). Flaps provide lift at slower speed.
This is the best Class I've ever attended in my life. I'm an Aerospace engineering student. I took aerodynamics class in year 2, 1st semester Some of these concepts remained vague until I watched this
Thanks…she explained this very clearly it does help if you have take at least one course of upper level physics. But she explains its so you really dont need it loved it. Learn something new everyday
Dr. Srivastava is an exceptional teacher, instructor and inspirational person. I’m a reasonably smart guy, and I learned a huge amount form her lecture. I believe that Dr. Tina should become a role model for young Americans. Far too many young girls and boys have no direction. Imagine taking a class to an airfield and having Tina introduce underprivileged children to the marvels of flight. How does a person learn all of this? Through having an enquiring mind. All that needs to happen is to plant the seed into one's mind. Minorities also require role models. Remember the motion picture Hidden Figures that covers the lives of 1950’s black female brilliant mathematicians working at NASA. Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughn crunched the numbers prior to the application of supercomputers. During World War 2, the all-black military pilots known as The Tuskegee Airmen flew dangerous missions. They never lost a pilot. There is 1955 movie “The Tuskegee Airmen” that is a must-see. And finally, as a major role model, is Dr. Ben Carson is recognized as one of the world’s preeminent neurosurgeons. His childhood did have complications. However, by the ninth grade, he was improving in school and the rest is history as he went on to graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School and later Carson was appointed the John’s Hopkins university's Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery. There of course are other brilliant minorities who have achieves success in academia and architecture. However, it was Dr. Srivastava’s MIT lecture that captivated me, and due to her being employed in a senior position at Raytheon, one of America's leading R&D and defense contractors, I believe that CRT (Critical Race Theory horror story!!) as being forced upon school students is doing a huge disservice to our country. Throw out the horrible teachers. We need more intelligent caring teachers and professors like Dr. Tina to shape the minds of our kindergarten and grade school students in order for The United States of America to soar to newer heights, and who knows....on a wing or aircraft designed by a young mind who was inspired by Dr. Srivastava. Brava Doctor!
@Hellish You gotta understand that showing how things work, giving insight, leading the students on a journey is the point of teaching. Sure, you can do the method you mentioned, but that is not too helpful in remembering anything. For the textbook, you just memorize things. Not too helpful.
Minute 48:40. Adverse yaw is due to the increased drag of the wing that has lowered an aileron. The wing that raises the aileron does not benefit a lot in drag and thus, you get an asymmetry in drag. Say you want to turn left and lower the right wing aileron. Unfortunately the nose will turn right and that is called adverse yaw. You need to apply left rudder in order to counteract the adverse yaw. There is no such thing as the rudder turning the wrong way as she states in minute 48:40. The nose of the plane turns the wrong way !
You are correct. She also goofed on the four forces. Planes do not climb because of excessive lift, nor do they move forward because of thrust exceeding drag. I was impressed that she did explain how wings create lift correctly.
@@jimziemer474 Yet she did not explain why a low pressure area above the wing and a high pressure area below the wing is created, Stating that the air accelerates above the wing and thus a low pressure area is created is not an answer. You have to explain why does it accelerate in the first place ? I wrote Greenspun and sent him the missing explanation but I got no answer from him
I finally completed B Tech and M Tech from IIT BOMBAY in Aeronautics Engineering. I can see and feel the concepts about Aerodynamics that is being taught here. Really, MIT have professors which are dedicated to their fields.
I am a naval architect and work in the area of marine propeller design . I just chanced upon this video and sat glued to it . Wish I had a teacher like her in my freshman year.
First she says lift is created by the wing redirecting air in a downward direction. Then she explains lift is created from Bernoullies principle. Take an ordinary 8.5 X 11 peice of paper. Hold it more or less horizontal to the ground between your thumb and index finger. Now, blow down only over the top of the paper. The paper rises up even though no air is being deflected down. Why? Why does the paper rise up? When you can explain why the paper rises up even though you are blowing down onto it, you understand the main way a wing creates lift.
well, if you only blow on the bottom side of the paper you will note it goes up. bernoullies principal will lift the sheet of paper but newton will lift the rest of the aircraft
@@viggolundhild3086 That still doesn't explain the contradiction in the video. She stated (implied it's all impact IMO). Does a wing produce lift via Bernoulli's principle or Newtons? Is it one or the other, or is it both? If both, then is one much greater than the other? She also stated air molecules don't have to meet up with each other at the back of the wing. That's true. But if they don't, then a void occurs somewhere on the top surface of the wing correct? Which I don't beleive happens. I would suggest even a flat piece of wood inclined to an airflow requires the air molecules to more or less meet up again at the back of the board. Which essentially requires the molecules on the top of the board to travel faster. They push on each other if you will. Also I would question that impact forces create most of the lift. I have always taught students the paper example and included the point about impact forces as well to punt the issue. None of them ever questioned it, but I appreciate the input.
Those shown rear wings of the race car (at16:31) are not spoilers. Their intention is not to spoil the airflow. They rely on clean airflow to generate downforce by themselves. There are spoilers on other types of race cars, but the one on this picture is clearly not.
I wished she could talk more about the Bernoulli effect, how the airfoil makes the air pass the top chamber quicker, and create less pressure, which results extra lift generated as I imagined.
Wing shape lift or "Bernoulli lift" occurs even at zero angle of attack. She didn't explain it, because she didn't seem to understand it. That's why she kept reverting to talk of paper planes and AOA-based lift, which is a different type of lift.
Yeah, I don't think she wanted to get into coanda effect or bernoulli's in too much detail, but it's unfortunate because thats the other half of why the airfoil creates lift.
The airfoil is pushing air in front of it which creates high pressure in front of it and low pressure behind it, (similar to how a speaker-cone creates a high pressure wave in front of it when it pushes forward whilst simultaneously creating a low pressure wave behind it.) It's the low-pressure that causes air to accelerate over the top of the wing, the acceleration doesn't cause the low pressure. In reality, the air that passes over the top actually initially slows down to the high-pressure wave in front of the wing, it's only once it's lifted up and over the leading edged that it accelerates, but it has still been slowed down to relative airstreams higher up, it's only been accelerated relative to air passing under the foil. This can be observed in this video using pulses of smoke ua-cam.com/video/6UlsArvbTeo/v-deo.html
Yeah she kept drawing the lines that the air was being deflected down... Sure this is true for the air going underneath the wing, and forced to follow its shape, but the air going over the wing isn't going to be forced downward at all, though she draws it as if it will... this confuses me
@@davesmith3289 She is NOT saying Bernouli is not in play here. She is simply saying that "Equal Transient Theory" is not in play here. The camber of the wing is a venturi. The venturi effect of the camber of the wing does excellerate the air. She actually says that. What is NOT true is that the camber of the wing causes the air to travel "father" and that is "what makes" the air travel "faster." That is False. For example, when the F-4C/D and early E Phantoms droped its leading edge flaps and trailing edge flaps the camber was increased, thus increasing the venturi effect thus decreasing pressure even more, thus increasing lift. But the distance from the leading edge and training edge never changed. So it is not the distance the air has to travel that causes it to excellerate. THAT IS WHAT SHE IS SAYING!! Read Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators and you will see what she is talking about and be humbled too.
14:37 - " ... all these forces sum to zero" - it is wrong or an oversimplification for air. There is a difference in fluid pressure on the top and bottom sides of any body in any fluid (in a gravitational field, particularly for liquids - water drones mentioned!). This pressure difference integrated over the total surface results in a force acting on the object that is different from zero - the buoyancy force. And the pressure on the upper side is lower than the pressure on the lower side - this is how the buoyant force (Archimedes) should be explained. Buoyancy of a paper plane is really negligible, for an aeroplane (wing, fuselage etc) is also too small to take it into calculations of the lift, but it is very significant for balloons.
16:20 - actually a negative lift is present in every good racing car - even without any spolier. The shape of the front part (a nose) deflects air upwards - it pushes the front of the car down (OK, additional "canard" like front spoilers increase this negative lift). What is worth of mentioning - Bernoulli principle is also used to attract a racing car down to the ground. The bottom of the chassis is shaped like a reversed airfoil (reversed classical wing), it produces in this case a nozzle between chassis and ground. Reduced crosssection area. Increased air flow produces lower pressure directed upwards to the chassis. Additional the bottom of a racing car body is made in a very smooth way - to reduce the drag. The drag in a regular car is produced by all hollows, empty spaces, tubes and rods - all those parts are covered in a racing car. Aerodynamics of a racing car ...
If the propeller can cause so many issues with unbalanced thrust and gyroscopic procession, why not have two counter-rotating blades to cancel out the torque? (I don't know anything about airplanes; there is probably an obvious reason)
I studied thermodynamics in mechanical engineering and I touched upon this subject of drag and lift and vortices and Bernoulli’s equations many years ago. The field was fascinating then as it is now but, the only difference is that today it’s much more better explained in lectures like this one rather than pure mathematics. Bernoulli’s equation explains it far better that pressure difference between the lower part of the surface and the upper part of the surface creates lift.
"I studied thermodynamics in mechanical engineering" LMFAO " ...today it’s much more better explained" clearly you didn't study the english language! Because you cannot speak worth a damn!
This is an IAP (Independent Activities Period) course. It is a special four week term at MIT that runs from the first week of January until the end of the month. Students, faculty, staff, and alums can hold sessions on things they really enjoy. Basically it's what the MIT community does for fun in between semesters.
@@mitocw This course is embarrassing. Ok maybe for a hobbyist, but it shouldn't be associated with MIT in any way. (fyi, I'm a 25,000-hour airline pilot. I've given flight instruction and seen many instructors as well.)
Thank god for her talking about the equal transit theory. I was taught that when I was young. It never made sense to me and had me very confused. How she explained lift was always my hunch and makes way more sense. It made everything else I know about flight finally fall into place. Like a eureka moment.
and that's what makes a good teacher. now, technically, viscosity is not resistance to flow. it's the tendency for the particles of the fluid to stick together, as a consequence of which, you get resistance to flow and other effects.
My maths lecturer explains trigonometry/calculus by replacing theta with donkey/monkey so that we listen and according to my chem teacher high school chemistry is just a trailer for secondary school
5:42 - Color me terrifically confused by that streamline representation. Wouldn't the flow become quite turbulent on the back top side before it made a bend like that? Or let's ask the question this way - why does the air bend down? Isn't it because the local pressure on that streamline is less than the atmospheric pressure outside the control volume so that as the topside flow exits the CV it has a downward component? So then is she just saying that the delta-M on the CV is what causes lift and not the delta-P via Bernoulli?
The airflow behind a wing when it is creating lift is, in fact, turbulent. The higher pressure of the underside makes it flow towards the lower pressure upper side exiting the trailing edge, but they both are traveling downward. This wing wash turbulence causes some of the induced drag. The mass of air is deflected down due to the momentum imparted by both sides of the wing. It is the Coanda (surface adherence due to viscosity) effect that makes those molecules follow the wing surface in a downward direction. Why can we understand why we get a downdraft from a ceiling fan or a helicopter and not understand that they are in fact rotating wings ?
You are correct that wing as drawn would be in stall. Above a wing, the pressure is lowered because it 'wants' to go straight - Newton 's First Law. This derates the lower pressure at the surface as it "tries" to go straight, just like you swinging outward on a playground merry-go-round In normal lift it is *NOT turbulent* above. It is laminar. Coanda does *NOT* occur above a wing because there is no jet into still air and, therefore, no accompanying entrainment. The deflected air is from both bottom and top and MORE is from the top. The air follows the upper convex curve simply because the atmospheric pressure is pushing it against that surface (Downward) as long things aren't happening too fast for the mass of the air to be accelerated by the pressure Gradient.
Air stream flow at the lower portion get compressed to produce high pressure applying Bernouli flow the area getting reduced produced increase in velocity but when area getting increased producing a decrease in velocity with increase in pressure thus the differerence pressure along the aerofoil down strram and upstream produces a lift following a drag.
I believe she is wrong about the paper plane's shape. I convinced my planes fly longer (and slower) if I don't bend the edge flat. I think Bernoulli's principle applies at least as much as Newton's in this particular case.
Actually she explains things fairly poorly, not extremely wrong and adds too many unnecessary things making it sound much more complex than it is. She does explain some things correctly, but hardly uses correct terminology even when she says common terms are needed at the beginning. I didn't hear her say vertical or horizontal stabilizer. She never clearly affirms that lift is the top-bottom difference in pressure, but only says "conservation of momentum which is technically wrong. Among several other things the gyroscopic precession should not have been mentioned and both of them couldn't answer the question about it. I can provide details on request.
@@null090909 Bernoulli explanations for lift are always wrong. Newton explains most of the full story, but not in the way most amateurs explain it. A moving wing creates pressure gradients. Those pressures: A) provide more pressure under than over, thus pushing up. B) Those *SAME* pressures cause all the accelerations of air you see around a wing and this satisfies Newton's Third Law also. . You get a paper airplane to fly well and slower by paying attention to balance (CG) and trim (up elevator). See the book by Barnaby. How To Make & Fly Paper Airplanes Captain Barnaby Navy
Confusion is noted when discussing gyro precession. For its effect, a force has to applied, tail moved up or down. Most tricycle gear airplanes never force the pilot to take notice. Not so in a tail wheel airplane as the tail is raised or lowered during take off or wheel landing roll out.
For P factor, when the aircraft pitches up or is flying at a higher angle of attack than level, the right descending blade has an increased angle of attack to the relative wind than the left ascending blade. This difference in angle of attack creates a lift differential between the two, and the descending blade is creating more lift aka thrust, and because there is more thrust being produced by the right propellor, there is a left turning moment. P factor is most pronounced at higher angles of attack (increased pitch) and high power settings, like a climb or takeoff, or when practicing slow flight.
Notwithstanding this is one my most favorites topics, I would spend the whole lecture listening to her if she was teaching maybe literature! She is so clear and precise in her lecture!!

I have flying phobia and seen thousands of air disasters to add my fear....i sat whole session her lecture and I am ready to fly once the pandemic over.......Tqvm Prof Tina
This dynamic MIT professor excels in elucidating fundamental concepts, making complex ideas accessible and engaging. In stark contrast, the demeanor of the senior faculty member, Professor Frank Handel, at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, was anything but inspiring. His aeronautics instruction was hindered not only by his heavy Polish accent but also by his propensity for belittling his students, deriving an unsettling satisfaction from their humiliation. A former pupil even took the initiative to apprise him of their career progress through a heartfelt letter, only to receive the document back, marred with red ink corrections addressing grammar and spelling errors. This incident marked the end of their correspondence. Professor Handel, however, took great delight in recounting this memory, finding amusement in the impact he had left.
I don't understand 16:05, who can help me......the race car generate lift only when it is an arched shape. So it's not everything moving through fluid can produce lift, right? And when it comes to fuselage producing lift, because fuselage is a shape of cylinder, it produces lift only when there is an angel between it and the airflow. If the fuselage flies horizontally, it won't produce lift, right?
There it a GREAT inaccuray at time 18:55 - - the deflection of the air in a downward direction is NOT the main reason for lift of an aircraft wing. Yes, it's one of the reasons but not the main reason. An aircraft wing can produce lift without deflecting air downwards. A wing can produce positive lift even at a negative angle of attack. That is when the trailing edge of the airfoil is higher up than the leading edge of the wing relative to the oncoming airstream. This is due to the fact that convex curve of the upper wing suface creates a pressure that is lower than the free-stream ambient air pressure. The difference of pressure between the lower side of the wing (which is close to ambient pressure) and the low pressure above the upper side of the wing creates the main reason for the lift.

I hv been in the aviation (engineering) trade for 37 years... 13 years as an engineer, and 24 years as an Instructor. This is a very good lecture.
She's awesome ! She cares so much about being understood using the simplest vocabulary and being that chill while remaining exact. Great pedagogy
"Lecture N°2"
A mistake that many do is to use all their vocab where it's not necessary.

(Work = Force x Distance)
In conclusion, there might be a really tiny rolling effect on the aircraft but it won't be significant to cause the aircraft to actually roll.
Calm and soothing. Loved her teaching. Thank you UA-cam for recommending this video.
One of the best lectures I have ever taken through my life so far! And, this is for free!!! Now I realize I have been just a moron paying several thousand dollars and ended up just wasting my precious time. In my subconscious I heard her voice and it felt right waking up this class. What I was watching before snoozing isn’t closely related but I stayed through the class, I believe I learnt something.
The excitement of the instructor is palpable. Kudos for the lecture, enjoyed it very much!
There is a misunderstanding. If there is a smooth steady flight, their lift is equal to the weight and thrust is equal to the draft. Not has to exceed, but be equal. Only while changing velocity or altitude do these forces exceed one over another.
Lies again? Battery AA

The best instructor and smoothly feed me with information . thank you. I wish if I could print out that lecture to be handy.

Those shown rear wings of the race car (at16:31) are not spoilers. Their intention is not to spoil the airflow. They rely on clean airflow to generate downforce by themselves. There are spoilers on other types of race cars, but the one on this picture is clearly not.
She is undoubtedly good to explain the subject matter!
The airfoil is pushing air in front of it which creates high pressure in front of it and low pressure behind it, (similar to how a speaker-cone creates a high pressure wave in front of it when it pushes forward whilst simultaneously creating a low pressure wave behind it.)
It's the low-pressure that causes air to accelerate over the top of the wing, the acceleration doesn't cause the low pressure.
This is Gold❤️. Glad youtube recommended this. Stuff is explained in such a nice easy way!
Because you cannot speak worth a damn!

now, technically, viscosity is not resistance to flow. it's the tendency for the particles of the fluid to stick together, as a consequence of which, you get resistance to flow and other effects.

Can you say full form of MIT
This derates the lower pressure at the surface as it "tries" to go straight, just like you swinging outward on a playground merry-go-round
In normal lift it is *NOT turbulent* above.

Those pressures:
A) provide more pressure under than over, thus pushing up.
B) Those *SAME* pressures cause all the accelerations of air you see around a wing and this satisfies Newton's Third Law also.
.

Confusion is noted when discussing gyro precession. For its effect, a force has to applied, tail moved up or down. Most tricycle gear airplanes never force the pilot to take notice. Not so in a tail wheel airplane as the tail is raised or lowered during take off or wheel landing roll out.

I have been changed the whole life .... that 's answer my questions about this .... thank you kid....
Awesome lecture. I recently got my private pilot license and you explained things I’ve been studying in a way that made so much sense. Thank you.

Yup. Good ol FAA creating a bunch of idiots spouting nonsense.
