    Since day one we started building this airplane, what I knew for certain was that I wanted to build a plane that’s IFR capable. I’ve spent the last couple of months shopping around and asking questions from experienced pilots and builders. I wanted to know what the best options are when it comes to the avionics for the airplane. Since this was one of the bigger expense you will make outside of the airplane kit and engine.
    I will be installing the Garmin G3X touch in the Mojo Sling. And we will be building a custom avionics panel from midwestpanels....
    The List of equipment includes:
    - Two 10” G3X touch screens
    - A Garmin G5 for backup
    - A Garmin GTN 650 for IFR flights
    - A Garmin GMC 507 autopilot.
    All of these will work seamlessly together.
    I chose to go with Garmin because for one, most of my flying hours are actually behind a Garmin G1000 so I’m well familiar with the EFIS (electronic flight instrument system). But also there are some custom features we will be adding to this plane, for example an action camera video/audio live feed. With the Garmin virb action camera, I can literally record flight videos without having battery die out, and getting the ATC audio would be through wireless connection, since we already have a Garmin system working together. These are some of the functions that pushed me more towards Garmin

    i'm from the 'steamclock' generation from age 0 to 7 we lived at a little glider training/sport airfield near a militairy airfield, and afterwards all free time we spent there ( as my late father worked there ) I only stopped flying after I emigrated.... thats why i like your videos, I see the same enthusiasm as I had/have for aviation and you bring up a lot of new stuff . Both avionics today and modern engines like the rotax are amazing. I love the part you flying because that despite all that glass and computer stuff you fly relaxed , feel one with the plane , and look outside, not glued to the instrument panel :-)

    Mojo Mike, a suggestion for your consideration in developing your dream and this very good youtube channel:
    Subj: Digital Circuit Breakers, VPX systems, capabilities, limitations and special installation requirements
    a. VPX is a very new technology that has potential, but there are ZERO commercial aircraft that uses this technology ...this is NOT because Commercial wide body a/c are behind the 8 ball in tech, but related to very strict safety guidelines. If it's not obvious, depending on ONE single device to handle power and signal output in the cockpit means that device becomes a single point of failure. I recommend you speak to that limitation. I am talking specifically about boeing and airbus. It's good to think about why these two manufacturers have NOT selected VPX devices.
    b. NOT ALL circuits CAN OR SHOULD be using a VPX system. I recommend that you speak to what kinds of dedicated "traditional" circuit breakers that will never be routed to the VPX and must be installed as standalone..and in what systems should also have redundant circuits and thus two (or more) dedicated circuit breakers.
    c. Saving space on a panel is not the only goal with a VPX...or aesthetics. Those are the lessor of any advantages you want to prioritize. .the entire cockpit resource management environment for the pilot has to be taken into consideration. In the event of a loss of power, or a lack of display resolution, even an intermittent problems, reliability of readout, or even pilot eye sight problems, NOTHING really beats using tactile (I can feel the circuit breaks popped out and I can reset it using my fingers without turning digital "pages" and taking my eyes off the horizon). "glass cockpits" are very useful if the devices are used and the pilot is trained to understand how to use them effectively and SAFELY. There are some considerations that should be discussed to understand what that actually means....specifically the kind of strong training regimes to think about before depending on them. This is very important in EXP and LSA pilot community as the standards, under VFR do not require proof of any kind of training for this very high tech and information dense technologies. And more importantly, to understand that not all electrical circuits can be fed to the VPX, and you should never want to do that even if you could.....Ask a very experienced Pilot and also a very experienced Avionics Engineer to recognize the kind of limits you want to establish before implementing VPX..This is very very important to understand before you design your aircraft. Get second opinions. This will help you build safely and still embrace the technology you have chosen. For me, simple and reliable is the way to do. There are plenty of places to install standard Circuit breakers....without cluttering the main panel. And it is way less expensive to install and to maintain. This is a view that is shared with almost every single career avionics tech and engineer that has observed this new VPX culture. I am not saying it's a waste of money or unsafe...I just think it isn't something that is necessary and the few advantages offered does not overcome some of the critical flight safety risks they cannot solve...whereas standard CB's do not achieve this higher data density, but they are bullet proof for the critical flight safety aspects.
    d. Installation of the VPX in a a panel. Recommend you understand what power requirements and specific wiring and connector and shielding requirements are....there are some basic routing and separations requirements for traditional circuit breakers, and that should be followed even if you are going with a combined VPX. In addition, there will be a electrical power consumption tax ...as well as considerable heat dissipation requirements. I recommend you show how the panel is designed, how circuits are routed and why they are separated, and what special provisions for active cooling systems are going to be installed to keep your devices from cooking over time. Because this is monitoring and connecting power, ground and signal wires and cables..it is ABSOLUTELY Critical that the device be designed and the panel as well to be correct in matter of ground loop. This is probably the single most important AVIONICS issue with VPX. Make sure it is tested and verified...each and every single wire, cable, ground and the panel...Signal noise is your enemy with these VPX devices...and that can mean the difference between a dependable virtual digital circuit breaker ...or worse, an undependable indication. Again, as sophistication and complexity goes up, so too as the risks of faults and failures. This has to be installed correctly ricky ticky...no fudging...no guessing. And a good scheduled maintenance to re-verify proper indication even if the manufacturer does not suggest it. This adds to the complexity and the total cost of ownership. Visual inspections behind the panel to make sure there is no corrosion, fod, bad connections, swarf, insulation damage, thermal damage...etc....as the complexity goes up, so too does the inspection process.
    I am not trying to talk you out of VPX. I am stating real world realities....and some recommendations that will help you build and fly a really safe plane...and maybe help guide you in the decisions points.

    Great to see someone building a plane....really doing it and completing it....thanks for sharing! I know it happens but it's hard to visualize what that means without seeing you do it...encouraging to us that have thought about it but weren't sure what we'd be biting off.

    The 915 is a great engine, but I wouldn't consider it for myself (yet). The primary benefit of the 912 is time. It's a time-tested, battle hardened powerplant that has evolved throughout the years to become rock solid and reliable. It has a proven track record (with data to back it up) and a large network of qualified technicians to service it.
    That panel is sweet!

    No doubt the garmin stuff is nice. So far I’m leaning towards the GRT for my panel. I was surprised how much I didn’t care for the dynon after I actually saw it in person.

    As an avionics tech l recently did a garmin upgrade on a sling 4 , it is an ex demonstrator from TAF in South Africa the owner has had it for a couple of years, the owner at also being an ex RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) Rad tech did most of the new panel wiring himself and brought it and the aircraft to us to finish the job for him, what was supposed to be only a few weeks turned into just shy of six months that he was without his aeroplane, the fact it was an ex demonstrator meant that it was an absolute nightmare to work on, there was crap everywhere that wasn't connected to anything and somehow the GFC500 Autopilot roll servo worked without any power being connected to it, ....spooky.... it had all Garmin in it with G3x touch PFD , the CANBUS system shouldn't have worked but it did nevertheless it was completely re wired , I did find that the sling isn't an upgrade friendly aircraft when it comes to routing new wiring through the wings into the cockpit and the biggest pain in the arse that I found was that the aircraft hardware was metric , not handy when all of your LRU's and other typical aviation bits use imperial hardware

      Do yourself a favor and go garmin. I've flown MGL, Dynon and Garmin and for a little bit more money, you get a WAY better system. Pilots tend to be super cheap guys and they are going to try and talk you into saving money on cheaper glass. Don't listen to them.

    Mike, I don’t understand your big issue with your audio feeds during live flights? Other UA-cam bloggers such as, citation Max, stevokanivo,baron pilot, and many others hsve been getting live act audio feeds as well as pilot and passengers. I think they have a small mixer device that patches airplane coms into GoPro camera footage. Also I think some of them even have all the aircraft audio recorded separately on a small device for editing. I would give Max, or Steve a shout and I bet they can get you squared away. And I bet for much less than your looking at from Midwest or Garmin. Otherwise everything else your putting into your panel is great. Another nice thing about getting to design your own panel is you get the equipment that’s right for you as well as what fits your budget. I do so hope your going with a carbon panel. You just can’t beat the look of carbon fiber. Either way it’s coming along just great. How about some more build videos?

    This is incredible! I used to install and remove avionics, including bundling the cables. I can see that Midwest does an excellent job.
    Your chosen equipment is so far beyond what I flew IFR back in the 80s and early 90s: steam gauges, paper maps and Jepp books. Just updating the Jepps was a chore. Plus, your plan for video and audio will provide outstanding videos for us!
    Why did you choose a glass panel on the pax side? You won't need a co-pilot unless you're flying Part 121, if then. Plus, wouldn't analog gauges be better as a backup for the glass? Seems if one glass panel goes, both could go. I'm sure you thought this through, but I'm curious about your decision.

      Each one of the panels has its own built-in independent battery and can actually operate completely removed from the airplane for about 4 hours.
      Technically, the one on the left is your primary display in the one on the right is for engine management and navigation, but with a touch of a button they both can do both. This means that you can have two pilots or switch it back to moving map. Additionally you have redundancy because each one of them is a completely independent system and even an electrical failure won't knock out both of them.
      Also, these displays are extremely extremely reliable, significantly more reliable than any mechanical gauges.

    I have heard that the panel is not the most expensive ticket, but the annual subscriptions that the panel Force you to have to keep up with updates.Just subscriptions alone you will spend a hole new panel every 16 month in Subscriptions. $3000+ per year

    As a former avionics tech and flight test engineer, I would caution you about a couple of things. That word "old" that you used repeatedly really doesn't apply when your butt is on the line. Reliability is the first priority. Aviation equipment, engines and accessories evolve naturally. Everything. Have a look at the revision level of any piece of equipment to see that plainly. Garmin does a good job and stays on top of that pretty well. The price reflects that.
    The second point is this - that silicon you are depending on is operating at a comparatively low level. Proper grounding and the corrosion control of it is an inspectable high point to watch for. Higher adjacent current draws and grounding loops can have an irritating effect on that sensitive equipment. Its going to test perfectly on the bench, no doubt. The real test is after the installation when you start running other components such as strobes, landing lights, fans, etc. Don't forget what your instructor said about the magnetic compass - sensitive stuff is very subjective to its environs.
    Great airplane, Mojo - it will serve you well.

    DAMN!! That GTN650 is going to cost more than my entire glass panel setup !!! I going with FlightView EFIS $4300 with 2- 12.9" ipad pros and 1- 9.7" ipad . That cover's all my Flight Instruments, VFR Navigation, Engine Instruments, Situational Awareness alerts/warnings/ reminders/ADS-B, Comm display. Trutrak xCruse 110 $2,800. That's my auto pilot and my glass panel backup. Garmin GTR 225 Comms $1,800. $8900 TOTAL !!!

    Mike, thank you for bringing very interesting videos. Recently I watched you video on Viking Aircraft Engines. You mentioned that your choice for your Sling is Rotax 915, can you elaborate a little more on those two engines both “pros and cons”, I think it would make an interesting subject for discussion in a video.     I built my plane with a VPX, Dual G3X, G5, GTN 650 and a mess of other Garmin goodies. 150 hours in, I wouldn't do anything different on my panel. It's ridiculous!

    Thanks for video; I am currently configuring my new airplane, and I came across the Garmin Communication modules. I see GTR200 is at very good price comparing to GTR225B. But I see majority of aircraft if not all; are using the GTR225 module and never see the GTR200. I am still not sure which one to go for and I fly only VFR. Can you help regarding this?

    not an expert but I'm pretty sure the reason for slow migration of using new tech in the aviation world is due to the cost of getting the new tech certified. All that digital stuff is cooler looking but one good lightning strike and you may be flying without it. And if your engine is reliant on digital everything that may cause it not to run. Hopefully in that case you have a plane chute that is not electrically operated that could get fried as well. Remember when you have that kind of problem in a car you may crash but not from 1000+ feet up. Not a rant or whine if it comes across that way, just some common sense reasoning for the slow tech acceptance in aviation.

    Question for the people that know about avionics. Garmin seems to be the gold standard, and with that comes the extra charge (though rightfully earned.). My question is that if it might be similar quality for less with a company like MGL.

      There are definitely less expensive options especially in the experimental world. But when you think of the major players, the closest in quality and functionality would be the Dynon Skyview or avidyne. And they all cost about the same.

    Hi Mike. While designing my "dream glass panel" using an online tool, and looking at the multiple options in terms of price and capability, it left me wondering: What will happen if there's a cyberattack, a solar flare that cooks satellites or something external that may turn my screen blue mid flight and the info never comes back for sometime? Wouldn't be good to have a mix of glass + analog gauges just in case?

      These displays are independent of satellites, They don't necessarily rely on external navigation, and most steam gauge airplanes still rely on GPS to feed the HSI anyway. These glass displays can also use VOR as well if you want. Nothing could actually destroy or take these displays down, short of an EMP. Although because their radiation hardened, an EMP (Which is just a nuke) produces enough induced current to fry analog gauges bearings as well almost immediately which is what happened on the Hubble Space telescope as well

      That doesn't happen on these displays. The blue screen for a few seconds is known to happen on TV screens, specifically because of the way that the broadcast system works with the analog video. These digital displays don't have any connection to the outside world as a requirement, and can work completely independently. In fact if you brought it back a thousand years ago before any satellites or anything existed, it would operate just fine.

    I thought about going to glass recently when I needed to repair my DG and AI, but the cost was so high and I'm used to the old way. Seriously, if you ever lose them in IFR, I wonder if they made your flying too easy. Over the years, I've had to face several issues when flying, but so far so good.

    $40-50K for a small computer is a lot to me, I am figuring it will be obsolete in 2 years. If I find a second hand lesser tech. for a lot less, I would do that probably. It would still be an upgrade to me. My wings were built in '71, that is 50 years ago. I want an IFR plane, but I ain't made of money. I don't plan to go into politics anytime soon either.

      I did. The skyview is a very neat setup. Some of the customized functions I wanted was better on the Garmin.

      What difference does that make? There’s lots of Tony Robbins videos if you want to be more successful in life. I think Mike said out of courtesy, and by way of introduction that he’s an Entrepreneur. That probably means its how he makes money. Maybe his dear Gran left him some too. Either way, thats neither your business or mine since this channel is about his experiences with his build. Mike has opened up that part of his life to us, and he brings a really fresh and stimulating perspective. I’m a new builder too, Mike, but a much older man, and I really enjoy the way you bring us all along with your quiet but infectious enthusiasm. Great work! Thank you and please keep it up!

      You can have that, but with the additional backup in the G5 you have multiple levels of redundancy.

    Would you be interested in helping us out with input and sharing ideas in developing a small aircraft that is a cargo plane for Bush communities in Alaska and possibly globally. Were desiging two one manned and one unmanned a drone cargo plane. We will need all kinds of electronics. The reason for a drone cargo plane is that we had too many pilots die in just the past few years in Alaska.
