"Why couldn't they have a happy ending?"... In truth, they did. They lived almost a totally normal life and had a beautiful love story in the aftermath of an apocalypse. While the rest of the world is violent, cruel, and scary, they lived happily together for 16 or so years. They had a more fulfilling, satisfying life than most of us do now.

I recently read a book called "A Paradise Built in Hell" by Rebecca Solnit, detailing how the general human reaction to disaster seems to be cooperation and community rather than becoming selfish monsters. It also talks about how centrally planned responses to disaster are often ham-fisted and brutal, ending up doing more harm than good, which is an excellent critique of the actions of FEDRA as described in this episode.
    A very much recommended read.

History has a different view. Post Roman Britain for instance, descended into a hellhole very similar to a world depicted in post apocalyptic fiction, with a society that once had heated baths, tourist towns, trade via coinage and rule of law, to a world where people resorted to cannibalism, burned human dung for fuel, and was basically ruled by bandit/raiders who plundered at will outside of a few remaining well fortified settlements. It is true that when small disasters happen, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, terror attacks etc happen that communities rally together, but if every facet of society was broken at once, like during the fall of the Western Roman Empire (for Western Europe at least, the Eastern Empire maintained cohesion), or such as the infamous bronze age collapse, then generally everyone does turn on each other.
The key difference being that in minor disasters, immediate needs like food, water and etc can still be met, and disaster relief is possible. In a world where basically the entire supply chain breaks and you now have millions (history has never had a collapse involving billions) of people unable to sustain themselves, that population tends to cannibalize (both in reality and on occasion metaphorically) each other.

I’ve never seen the gay fantasy captured as well as in this episode. Having a little house apart from the world where we spend our time working on little projects… not having to worry about being perceived, just being together. This episode shows why we need more queer media for adults that isn’t just about a high school coming out story. Queer relationships have such a depth to them that we rarely get to see beyond that narrow frame and I’m glad we’re starting to get more stories like this

Also it’s interesting seeing how people reacted to this episode. I think the apocalyptic setting with a strong male lead brings in a lot of people who expect a pure action/horror story, but at its heart, it’s a folk story.

Absolutely loved this episode. Full props to the creators for being brave enough to change Bill's story and give him and Frank a happier ending. Especially liked how their first kisses were kind of awkward and hesitant (on Bill's part) but by the time of the strawberries, they were a lot more relaxed and easy.
Also, Ellie was nabbing some tampons in the opening. Real-world problems being addressed in an apocalypse situation is my drug.

I watched a couple of these episodes reactions and none of them seem to understand Frank telling Bill to go and take a shower. Like you, they seem to think that he means, you stink, Bill, but in honesty, what he is doing is seeing if Bill trusts him. By disrobing and getting into the shower he makes himself completely vulnerable--something Frank has already done when he showered. On the other hand, like me, you seem to be the only one who recognized Joel's shirt on Frank.

After having seen a few reactions to this episode I appreciate it even more. Apart from the brilliant emotional story it also shows that even a crazy world like this gets normal. You can only live in crisis mode for so long before you have to accept the new reality. In a way it also makes it even clearer that the world Ellie lives in is for her 100% normal, because she has never experienced anything else.
I also really like the part where Ellie found the tampons. Such a normal thing that would be so extremely inconvenient in a post-apocalyptic world. I can't think of a single post-apocalyptic movie/series where the daily inconvenience are adressed at all. A small detail they've done really really good in this series so far!

it's a far better fate than what they got in the game. They both got to live a long happy life together before they died, there were far more better days than bad

The only people who hate on this show are either tlou gamers whowant a stricter allegiance to the source material, or worse, homophobic people. This is great television, one of the best ever.

I have a theory that Frank purposely played Long Long Time poorly just so he could get Bill to play it for him

No need for apologies. You're doing the best you can. I think a majority of us would've understood if you had skipped this episode entirely considering what you're going through.

No worries Alyce. My deepest sympathies on losing your doggo :( ♥ losing a pet is just the worst and everyone needs time to grieve and take time for themselves. As for the ep I have seen this episode several times over the past week because I've been watching other people's reactions to it. And it wrecks me every single time. I haven't cried over an episode of tv in quite some time and this one continues to make me emotional. The pacing and the story telling is absolutely brilliant. I feel sad for those people that are missing the point of it just because it's a story between 2 men. I mean Ellie's gay too and we don't make a big deal about it. That's what's so great about the world that Neil Druckman created. I watched an interview with Neil where he talked about changing the story only if it makes it better for the tv show if not it'll stay exactly the same as within the game. And in this instance I think they made the right call because it packs such an emotional punch (even though like you I do miss Ellie's interactions with Bill). In the game we only get a glimpse of Frank's and Bill's relationship and we have to interpret what happened based off a letter. Here we get to see it. And as many have said at least here they do get a happy ending of sorts best case scenario in an apocalypse really. Makes me wonder what other things will be changed. Sort of hoping that the story of Henry and Sam stays the same, but if they somehow mange to give it even more depth I'll be ok with whatever. So far the show has been absolutely stellar and I haven't looked forward to my Sunday's this much since GOT ended.

An amazing episode!! The only 2 gripes are have is that its a bottle episode and that Bill and Ellie dont interact. But really those are no real issues cause it was a damn good episode 🥹

Look at our pandemic - people are being absolute ghouls. Anyone who is disabled and ill is forced to isolate. Humans indeed would turn on each other and be atrocious if it were a faster moving virus. We're really not good at stuff. I love Bill and Frank. They got it right. They had purpose and they had love.
