From a landowners perspective. I live on top of hill in WV. Way out. No neighbors. Raised 6 kids. 4 boys, 2 girls. Livestock, dogs. People from out of state come here to hunt. My kids hunt and trap as well. These people are on vacation. Which I understand. I go on vacation. But a bunch of drunks with high powered rifles is not good. They throw their trash everywhere. Bottles on a tractor tire is not good. 2 of my german shepherds have been shot. They are scared of the dark. Big beer bellies. To lazy to walk. I get up early. Wait for them to fire up their 4 wheelers. They drive all the deer on my property. Plus I see where they go with their headlights on. So there is a reason these landowners arent happy. They want to be neighborly. But more times then not. It Pays not too. I spend hours picking up all their trash after hunting season. It's a pain in the hind end. Sad part. Most of these people dont like deer meat. Dont know how to field dress them. They think killing a deer makes them a man. Want some horns to put on a wall to brag about.
@Mike Honcho there's alot ot ginseng in WV. Yellow root or goldenseal. But you have to find it. On my farm. The old timer who owned it before me 25 years ago. Picked it heavy. So I got it. But its young and sparse. But it's all over. Thousands of acres of public ground that borders me. All hilly. Meaning city folk arent going to traverse those areas. Its abundant.
Seriously, the weather is hot...easy fire starter. Just playing safe so the state doesn't burnt down due to ppl wanted a fire to sit by. At least you can use your stove for cooking...kick back and enjoy the fire of that! Wahla!!

My BCHM chapter here in New Mexico camps and rides out of Iron Gate every summer so we can do trail clearing projects, removing fallen trees off of the trails and repairing bridges and eroded trails.

You can't have fireworks because of forest fire. I thought you would know that? You can't have a campfire because of forest fires. Maybe in the winter time or early spring depending on what state you're in but they're not willing to spend all the money and the chance at losing lives fighting forest fires from somebody's campfire that they didn't put out properly.
Hey there. I am going to be out on this area in the next couple of days. I have high clearance but not a 4x4. I'm from Florida and would love to camp here. Any help would be great. I won't pass on the info..
As long as you have some decent clearance you can get up there no problem, but if you're in a car there's a few spots you got to be careful due to deep ruts. The campground just has a box where you put a few bucks in an envelope. It's first come, first serve. On the weekends there were always people there with horses. During the week, I was the only person camping. Also, it's Cougar / Mountain Lion country so just be aware of that element. I haven't been there in 3 years, so my info is a bit dated. It's a beautiful place to camp and hike.

A reason that the private property owners probably don't keep the roads better is because they don't have the money to pay for the roads for other people to enjoy at their expense. If the roads were going to be kept in pristine condition for a national campground, then the taxpayers themselves that support National campgrounds would be in charge of improving and keeping the road perfect for trailers and horse trailers and motorhomes and campers. I honestly don't see why anyone would go that far up to a national campground unless it was free. Have you heard of the word boondocking since you've been back? That is for free campsites on land where you don't have to pay for camping. Sometimes it will have a picnic table or limited improvements but you can camp there for free.
