Came out clean the seat was for the 3.3 tank thats why there was meat left but it works my mustang seats the same way with the 4.5 👍👍👍👍💪🤘

I just got a 2010 1200 and it has your original 883 style tank on it. And before someone chimes in no it's not a 883 up to 1200 because I originally thought that and it's not. Your bike looks sharp. I like the mat black motors on the 883 the 1200 is gray I think harley should've done it the opposite way around.

Bryan Chavez Thanks dude. It’s a quarter fairing. Harley makes them. Also several aftermarket companies produce them. This one is from amazon. I installed it in one of my first vids

Balisong 5891 I didn’t record doing this unfortunately. It was a direct swap. My gasket seemed fine. On Delboy’s Garage channel I think he has a video of swapping a 2.4 tank for a 3.3 tank which is pretty much the same as going to a 4.5 gallon.

I have a 2006 883 and want to fit a 4.5 gallon tank too, I found one from a Custom XL and wanted to be sure it would fit. When making the change, you recover the fuel cap and pump, right?
2006 model is carbureted so there is no fuel pump. It’s an entirely different tank. On the tank you need there is not a fuel pump cut out. Instead there is threaded knob sicking out for the petcock.
no actually mine is the early fuel injected model, i have the same 3.3 gallon tank and same fuel pump as yours. But I was wondering if the 4.5 tank would fit on an 883 because it seemed too big and tall..then I came across your video. So since they are both injection and the tank is compatible, can I mount it? Is there anything else to replace or change? Apart from the saddle I think..
Everything was a direct swap for me. The seat was a little tight up front due to the larger tank but that’s it. The mounting points are the same.

Love the 4.5 gallon fiel tank! Im looking to get an XL1200 with the 2.1 gallon tank- like they had on the 883 Superlow. Engine guards, windshield, and, if I can find it, the Arlen Ness Big sucker air cleaner. NO stage 1 junk on my ride. I will not be degrading the bike to a "ragged-out" 2 wheeled street bike. 🏍️👍🎉🤓🐻🧸Doug

I believe so. Main thing to look for are the mounting tabs and the cutout for the fuel pump

Hey hoping you’ll see this and reply🙏🏽 I have a 2019 iron 1200 and I bought the same tank you have (4.5 gal) got it cleaned out from Harley, they said I might not be able to run it because my bike is fuel injected and the tank was off a carbureted bike, hoping you have some insightful advice
You’ll need a tank with the cutout for a fuel pump. Look at the bottom of the tank. If it has an hour glass looking cutout and 5 screw holes or so, that’s fuel injected. If it just has a knob sticking out then that’s for a carbureted bike. You can make an fuel injected tank work on a carbureted bike with an adapter. To make the carbureted tank work on an EFI bike you have to cut and weld. If it were me I would sell that tank and look for a fuel injected one.

First figure out if your bike is carbureted or fuel injected (EFI). The tanks may look the same but the underside will be different. The one I have is for a fuel injected bike and looks like it came off of a 1200C. Hope that helps!

Do you mind to share how much did you have to pay for the used 4.5 g fuel tank? I was thinking to buy a new 4.5 g fuel tank but it seems like I will have to sand it and do pressure test/seal it and primer it and then paint it. This sounds like a lot of work to me. Did you have to do any of this since you got a used one? thank you in advance.
I paid $150 for all those parts. I’ve heard of pressure testing tanks but thought that was for old tanks with possible pin holes due rust. Check with a professional.

The mounting points should line up. The seat mounting points should also fit but the gap on the front will be different.
Im planning to swap the 4.5 gallon tank from the 1200 Custom onto my Iron 883 too. Do you know by any chance if the stock seat will still fit, or would it need replacement?
Not sure. My 3.3 gallon Mustang Fastback seat was a little long in the front but fit with the 4.5 tank. Your’s may fit ok but it would also a good time to upgrade from stock to the proper 4.5 seat anyways though.
@@twinsmotogarage1866 Thanks for the reply. Thing is I already added the pillion seat and sissy bar with a backrest to it, both the same stiching style as the rider seat. I would hate to have to swap them up again as I want to maintain the same stitching style throughout. The idea with the tank came recently. Wish I had had the idea before doing the rear section because the big tank will be extremely useful. I had no comfort problems with the stock seat. Just got to hope the stock seat fits with the 4.5 gallon.

@@wisegreeneyes The stock seat only works with the 3.3 gallon tank. I ended up buying a seat from Saddlemen that works with a 4.5 gallon tank.

Yes. There are other videos of swapping the fuel pump. That’s really it. Look at the parts diagram for your bike and compare to the part you are buying.

Not sure the exact bike it came from. It’s hard to find a tank in any size that is in good condition. I wouldn’t be too specific with the search. Locally I would just search “Sportster parts”. On eBay I would just search “Sportster tank” and click on any that look decent. Check the pictures for damage and to identify if it’s carb or fuel injected.

@@ZackBadCompany1234 This one came off an efi bike. Can identify it by looking at the bottom. Will either have a large cutout for the fuel pump if fuel injected or it will have a knob sticking out threaded for a petcock for carbureted

Andrei Fasola The grom doesn’t t seem like a bike I’d ride so long that I’d want a larger tank. Unless your dead set on the grom, I’d save on the upgrades and buy a bigger bike when the time comes
@@twinsmotogarage1866 All I actually want is a tiny 47 inch wheelbase bike that I can take with me hauled on the back of my car when travelling (and I will travel extensively, I wanna make a car/bike combo). So a modded grom with a 180 kitaco neo (or maybe swap 250/300) seems to be my best option and reliable one (in spite of the stupid cost of 5000 k or more for upgrading one - but hey, dream bike, right ?). The only thing I wanna figure out (especially if swapping) is how to get at least 120 miles out of that tank, if not 180-200. So modding the tank is the only option.
I'm just starting to ride so I don't have the bike - since you asked and whatnot. I'm doing my research for now.

That tank, if not rusted inside, would cost well over double $150.
Your seat was for a 3.3, probably won't work with 4.5, if the seat you got is a Harley seat it will be a good one.
I wouldn't repaint the fenders, everybody does flat black fenders with a different color tank, it looks good.
By now I'm sure you've already done whatever you gonna do, but I'll never get a Sportster again with 4.5........the main reason is the looks, I like the taller profile of the peanut, and skinnier riders view.

Bradley Stehno No I am using the same seat but it’s obviously too long. It puts a wrinkle in the seat. I plan to peel back the cover and shave it down a little in the front to make it fit.

That's not an injected tank. Gotta buy and adapter and weld it in.
I've seen this tank scheme come both ways. This one is injected.
Luckiest guy on the internet, thats 1000 dollar tank at hd , im still looking , anyway is not a 1200 tank , its a C tank as in xl883c or xl1200c , you can also find those tanks on superiors and generally they are 3.5 gallon , I would give my left wisdom teeth for a 4.5 gallon . Is 34 to old for wisdom teeth? That joke doesn't work. Anyway they do look really good and nice call on paint matching the fenders , thats going to be clean.
