  • Watch our latest craft corner video to learn how to make a mason jar candle
    You will need
    -Wax pellets
    -Wax dye
    -Long wick
    -Mason jar
    -Peg
    -Essential oils
    -Glue
    -Knife
    -Wooden spoon
    -Heating pot
    -Kitchen towel
    -Measuring cup
    Step 1: Fill the jar with wax pellets to the top
    Step 2: Pour the measured pellets into the pot
    Step 3: Fill the jar again but this time filling slightly below the top. Clean the jar with soapy water and dry with a tea towel
    Step 4: Add a very small amount of wax dye
    Step 5: Set your stove to a low heat
    Step 6: apply a little glue to the metal base of the wick and place it in the centre of the mason jar. Use the peg to hold it in place as the glue dries.
    Step 7:Add a small amount of essential oil to the fully melted wax.
    Step 8: Carefully pour the wax into the jar. It should come to just below the rim. Leave to dry overnight. Use kitchen towel to clean the wax from the pot before it hardens.
    Step 9: Once the wax has hardened clip the wick and trim it to roughly about 2cm.

    my advice : ALWAYS use a double boiler , if the wax catche fire (impossible with a double boiler) cover it but don't use water (risk of explosion) , be sure that your jar is designed to sustain it (the jar could break spilling hot wax evrywhere when you are using it) jar used to make canned food are able to sustain these temperature for example .Wax tend to stick a lot , don't use fancy melting dishes , I use old jar and can or when I'm doing jar candle I put my jar filled to the top with wax and with my wick in boiling water (but I turn off the heat when I put it in to avoid bubble that could spill the jar) , once all the wax is melted , I let it cool. put your essential oil right at the end . If you don't have a wick (common problem) , you have to use a cotton thread (synthetic thread can't be used as wick , they are baically plastic string) , you can improve your wick with salt (it helps the wick to sustain the flame) : poor a good amount of salt in water and try to disolve most of it and dip your wik in this solution then dry it with a microwave (microwave only heat water so if there is no water left , the wick will remain warm) at medium heat . The best kinds of wax for jar candle are low melting point wax like parrafin (not the best but the most affordable and easy to find) , palm wax , soy wax . If you want to use beeswax for its scent , use 1/4 cup of vegetable oil for each cup of beeswax , it will soften it and make it easier to melt.

      I got a wax warmer for the scented wax cubes (link below). I was thinking since all the wax doesn't melt away after the fragrance is gone, that I could pick up some mason jars, some wicks and dump the left over wax into the jar with a wick in the center making a candle. I'm assuming this is possible instead of just discarding the wax. It may take some time to fill up a jar, but it's better than just throwing it away. Even if it makes a regular candle, I can use that when the power goes out, especially living in Florida with the storms, etc.

    I just now did this based on this video, and I have a tip. If you're using soy wax, it will likely come in flakes and not pellets. Use two completely full jars instead of one full and one almost full. That's if you're using flakes. Great vid!

    Another way to measure the amount of wax you need: fill the container with water up to where you want the wax to be, then measure how much water you've poured in using scales/measuring jug. Then take off 10% and convert to grams, e.g. if you had 80mls of water, you'd need 72g of wax to make your candle 😊

      Omg thank you so much for the tip! I don't have measuring scales etc, it's hard to measure wax just by a guess 😊

      usually 1 and a half of the container you wish to fill if you, more is better than less and it harden and you can re-use it.

    • @bkucenski
      @bkucenski 5 років тому

      IKEA has cheap candles with cheap wax, but yes you can melt them down for the wax to use in your own project. If you plan on making a lot of candles though, you're better off buying the wax pellets in bulk.

      Just reheat a little more wax and color and pour slowly over the top. Or, use a heat gun to melt the wax and reset.

    • @kristejasen7692
      @kristejasen7692 6 років тому +2

      Olivia N. do not use crayons, the candle wick will not burn, there's something in the dye of the crayons that prevents the wax and the candle from burning. I learned from experience. I gifted someone a dyed candle that didnt burn.

    I find that using a bag clip like that you use on a chip bag works great to hold the wick. I recently just started making candles, trick candles and real ones. Trick ones as in using a real scent mixed with deer pee used for hunting. Then just regular scented candles. But thanks for the video it helps alot because i need ideas to improve. Anybody got a friend you want to play a prank on feel free to use my deer pee idea. Just make sure you add a regular scent on top of that. This way they don't smell it right away. They don't smell it until they burn pass the regular smell. I got my buddy with one. It burned down to the deer pee smell after two days. He couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from and kept running around to find it freaking out lol. I helped him get rid of the smell from his man cave room in his garage though. But it was funny.
