I’m only 4:30 into the video but want to make sure I’m understanding right. Is the screen the ONLY way to control the headlights? Even turning on and off your high beams? Seems very unreasonable for needing to frequently adjust them on dark roads when you pass oncoming traffic.
Looking forward to seeing this new crop of mid sized trucks, the Colorado, upcoming Ranger, Tacoma, etc. Most interested in the ZR2, new TRD Taco and new Tremor Ranger once they are all new. @@bolayer That's true, but if you're into camping and exploring, there's something to be said for a truck that can get you 95% of the way there and then you use a dirt bike or towed quad for that last 5%. The reviewer missed the mark on this review in my opinion by focusing so much on the interior for what is intended to be a basic version with moderate off-road ability. The Ranger Tremor interior comparison is also inappropriate as it is based on a mid level trim and MSRPs for $5600 more. He should be comparing a Z71 if focused on creature comforts. I love the intent of the Trail Boss.
It makes me really appreciate the Ford Ranger where you can buy a base model XL and option a real electronic rear locking differential, even without 4WD
22:40 the HO tune is only available for the Plus engine, unfortunately the base engine cannot be upgraded to Plus or HO power later. There are mechanical differences between the base engine and Plus/HO.
The old canyon/colorado had 6 bolt wheels, too. Or at least my canyon all terrain does. Also, I think that interior on the work truck represents great value, but on the LT and trail boss it might be a bit lack lustre. It's a shame you need to go Z71 to get a nicer interior and LEDs though. Once you've driven something with LED headlights, it's pretty tough to go back to halogen.
The original colorado 6 cyl ZR2 is still the goat for offroad purposes. Basic interior(which I like) , selectable lockers, heated seats, reliable engine, etc. It sucked on gas mileage and its rear shock mounts hangdown, but other than that, it was the best off road factory truck they make IMO.
I have the diesel and it’s next level goat. Diesel torque and engine breaking in low range is insane. Had a V6 zr2 as well but the diesel is something else. Sad to see it go.
The fan speed on the Trailboss you were driving at the time of comment is literally the large left knob on the center stack. Not sure how you missed that one.
You put out the most honest and reliable vehicle reviews around .. honestly best channel around for off road vehicles ! How does Chevy not make LED standard 🤦🏻♂️
I’m shocked that Chevy still isn’t using the ice blue tic tac display for the gauges and radio :P In all seriousness, awesome video and content as always. By far the best car review channel on UA-cam. I appreciate how Ryan and the crew are never low class about their gripes with the vehicles, but they don’t hold back on voicing the issues, either.
I am surprised with the fact that only about 3% of all viewers like Ryan's videos. His reviews are among the most interesting, the most comprehensive and the most technical ones. It looks like Americans prefer entertaining car and truck reviews.
I think the concept of a more base off-road focused model is pretty cool but it needs to at least have options for LED lights and seat warmers for those in northern latitudes. Personally I would forgoeva bunch of screen tech for a more simple interior and better lights. More screen integration of functions that won’t work in 10 years is a big fail to me by most manufacturers. I think the G80 is a bit crude but is effective but how much more would the rear selectable locked from the ZR2 be? That would be a nice upgrade. The reduced rear seat legroom is a bummer, also not a fan of gas turbos in trucks. When I heard they were losing the diesel option for the ‘23 model year we went out and tracked down a ‘22 Duramax Z71 last July as I live that engine and makes for a really well rounded truck. Happy with our choice versus waiting for the new one.
Interesting you didn't like the interior that looks super dated. That was the reason I didn't buy a 2022 Ranger Tremor. I think the Ranger Trenor was the best truck available in 2022, but this Colorado looks miles better and should be equal or better than the Rangers powertain. (Trail Boss with EcoTek night have not felt as cheap. ) The next generation Ranger interior looks much nicer but the exterior style does nothing for me.
@@B86432 What? This looks better, more power, and better interior than current Ranger. The screen and interior in the Ranger looks like it was straight out 2010.
@@Steven-xj2rf my ranger tremor was totalled and was thinking about getting this as a replacement due to the nicer interior. Found it odd that he said the ranger had a better interior considering it's hard plastics a decade old
was thinking about maybe trading my Ranger for a trail boss, but after seeing the screens for the offroading, ill be sticking with my trusty Ranger. Not a huge fan of the piano black around the screen and lack of buttons. really good looking truck though.
Headlight controls in the menu is a hilarious deal-breaker for me. I want to be able to toggle highbeams as easily as possible from the steering wheel. Am I missing something?
I just saw someone mod an automatic Tacoma with a manual 4x4 link.. using and FJ transfer case! Thats genius given that all these new 4x4s have so much electrical components and it gets tricky when ur Key fob wont read with the vehicle or you try and shift into 4x4 and it won't engage because of that
Ryan loves buttons so much, he has two words for them. It's amazing that even in 2023, vehicles are being made with cheap plastic steering wheels. I would totally understand it on a cheap basic transportation vehicle.
1 year later and this still looks good. If you want the luxury fluff comforts.... they are available if you want to pay for them. Zr2 or at4x. This is for those who want basics and want to do their own mods. Great truck as is. What you need. If your "want" more.... pay more for the fluff.
Im not positive, but i think you're looking for a nicer interior to go with the trailboss lift. You can go with a standard GMC Canyon. More things come standard on GMC, including the highest output motor.
Ive Never heard anyone complain about interiors that much before! Just because you prefer your diapers pampered doesn't mean everyone does!? I can see that interior being beneficial for what the truck is designed for... witch is mostly (OFFROADING) makes it easier to clean and will probably handle the elements better.
I absolutely do not understand car manufacturers' obsession with putting things in the touchscreen that have no business being there. I'm sure their explanation about the headlights is "they're automatic" but the amount of people I see running around with DRLs (which don't turn on the tail lights for some reason) well past the time when their headlights should be fully on tells me that that feature isn't quite what it should be.
Still don't understand why one would want a Colorado Trail Boss on 20's, when the trim's 18's perfectly fit the off-road theme, both asthetically and functionally (14:54 those are 20's, not 18's).
You are the only person that recommends premium for better performance. Good video though. I ordered a Z71 for the options not available with the lower brands. My off roading will be driving through my yard. Lol.
I've never quite understood the need for soft touch materials on the interior besides the door. I've never found the need to feel up my dash. Plus the harder materials are easier to clean up if you are actually using the truck for long off roading trips.
Driving Sports TV noticed the auto stop feature of the Terrain mode will jerk you to a stop when you let off the accelerator because the terrain mode is just for 4x4 low and crawling over difficult terrain, not for speeding down a dirt road like in the video. When going above crawling speed and off road or in loose terrain you should be in "off-road" and in 4x4 HI. Thats what I understand the setting to be used for. Anyone that knows better please explain.
I didn’t say I didn’t like it. I explained when it would be good in the video and then I just left it on - turning it off only after I decided we didn’t have obstacles worthy.
@@drivingsports my bad I'll edit my comment. Thanks for the info and the video. I am doing my research as the 23' Trail Boss is looking very good and I am considering it. Thanks again for your insight and video info.
Yeah trail boss looks cool but the wt interior sucks. People say it’s a good value but in reality it’s expensive for a wt midsize truck that’s got a lift kit and slightly wider stance.
With auto head lights, why does it matter if they added the head lights controls to the infotainment system. I don't remember the last time I got in a car and had to manually turn the head lights. I just think it's a weak point to bring up against the truck .
Looks like the new version is a nice truck, I really don’t care for the new tech screen and the need to fumble with that. I’m not sure yet of the newer 2.7, time will tell since it’s been out only 3 years or so. I have the 21 version ZR2 with the 3.6 and really happy with how simple and capable this truck really is. I like the electronic lockers though on my ZR2. I don’t see myself trading in any time soon. I just turned 15k on mine and will enjoy it for a very long time…
The 2.7 just sounds weak, although it has the numbers. I have a '22 ZR2 with the 3.6, and I also could not be happier. From what I have seen of new vehicles, I will have mine forever. The new 2.7 doesn't get great gas mileage, either.
All prior Chevy trucks that weren’t zr2 had an optional rear locker…the G80 auto rear locker, sure it wasn’t driver selectable but the good old and trusty G80 did its job and it did it rather well….
No numbers yet. And we didn’t have it long enough for our own mileage tests. Sorry. That said, these all do about 17-21 depending on conditions and driver input.
Hi Ryan, knowing that the Crosstrek Wilderness and the Colorado Trail Boss are two different vehicles, which one did you find more comfortable to drive? Which would you prefer for everyday driving-on the street, through snow, and on dirt roads? Overall, which one stood out as your favorite?
@@drivingsports Haha, right? Between the 2, my next vehicle will be my daily driver for every season in Pennsylvania and also my go-to for kayak fishing trips. I know I would need to lay the seats down in the Subaru and add crossbars.
Great & Balanced Review Note: The Upcoming Ranger Raptor has the All wheel Drive Option Whether its is available in Lower Trims will be interesting to see
GM messed up on how they describe the Trail Boss, it's actually based on the WT, not the LT. The LT comes with a nicer interior and exterior, including a leather wrapped steering wheel and body color front fascia. The Trail Boss really is just a WT with off road goodies added which is why it feels so cheap.
The one thing I can say is that blue is damn nice. It is a very nice shade. I am not confident this truck will last. That turbo 4 will hork up a fur ball sooner than later.
Most likely they integrated more into Center screen because it's cheaper, no wires no switches, I personally only needed the switches when I was testing bulbs, maybe once or twice a decade
@@drivingsports The old version was the class action king of failed transmissions, so I think further info from GM would be valuable info for your viewers. Thanks for the quick reply and best in class, really any class, of reviews for anything driven off-road and on.
Maybe some of the (should be) standard features will have crept back into the TrailBoss by the time I'm ready to get rid of my ZR2 (I paid the same amount for this truck as my diesel ZR2 brand new!).
Was there a tow mode that would have changed the lag on the low end? Not the same apples but asking bc the 2015 Chevy Colorado we have on normal is pretty laggy on throttle (for gas) unless in tow mode.
I can't take you serious when you day the Ranger Interior is nicer. The current Colorado is still an order of magnitude better than the garbage in the Ranger.
@Driving Sports TV Tremor is also Top of the line. Trailboss is actually work truck trim on the Colorado. The Z71 and ZR2 having nicer materials. The design of the Colorado is still light years ahead.
@Driving Sports TV XLT trim is equivalent to Colorado Z71 trim. Trailboss is equipped as a work truck, there would have to be a Tremor XL, for you to have a fair comparison .
Until the current ZR2, the Colorado was always a very generic looking. The Current ZR2 looks great, but this time Chevy has made the entire Colorado lineup look amazing! This trailboss looks like a smaller Silverado ZR2! Beautiful truck! I am disappointed in certain aspects Chevy left out, but LOVE the simple interior on a rig I take offroad
So every single video complains about the lack of a headlight switch but I haven't seen if anyone checks to see if they come on automatically when you turn on the windshield wipers because if they dont than this lack of a stalk is a complete red flag no buy from me but if they turn on auto when you put on your wipers I prob wouldn't care because I leave my lights on auto anyway except when its raining. I would hate to be trying to navigate a menu on my screen to turn them on when its raining instead of just a quick flip of the stalk.
@@drivingsports to be honest, I do like how they look sometimes depending on the vehicle, especially on a off-road truck like this they don’t really look out of place, except when you see the price of the truck….that’s when your like….over $44k on a new truck and it don’t even come standard LED/HID headlight? Or at the very least come with LED daytime running lights? And lets not forget to mention that not even fog lights come with this $44k+ truck….yet there’s new vehicles that are half the price of this truck that come with standard LED daytime running lights, in addition to having LED taillights…. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment, but I was wondering what happened to your 4Runner? Did you trade it in for your ranger? I love both trucks by the way…. The 4Runner is one of the last great body on frame trucks/SUV’s that was built for a purpose and that purpose was to go off-roading on a regular hardcore basis…it’s just an amazing bullet proof reliable and as always dependable Toyota vehicle and you can’t go wrong with that….And for the Ranger…. Well the Ranger in my opinion has the best midsize truck engine that any current midsize truck has or has ever had(with the exception of the first generation Colorado/Canyon when their paired with the optional 5.3 Vortec V8, which if I recall correctly, was first made available for the 2009 model year) but the Ranger’s ecoboost for what it is….a small 4 cylinder turbo engine…it sure does make some big time truck stump pulling torque!!! Even the HP is pretty competitive, but the Ranger is a truck and torque is what a truck uses to earn it’s worth and the Ranger definitely comes packing with that Torque!!! Not to mention how that toque hits you hard!!! Which makes the Ranger a pretty fast truck too!! That ecoboost definitely gets that turbo spooling quick!!! Ok, Okay….that’s enough for me, before I start sounding like a Ford infomercial as oppose to sounding like a regular 30 second Ford commercial.

not a big issue, I doubt he'll be buying one, that 8 spd auto has such a bad reputation.
I have no problem with a basic interior if it makes the truck cheap - but 43000 is not cheap at all
The more I see on these, the more I love them 🤤 I can’t wait to order my Z71 Colorado!
You put out the most honest and reliable vehicle reviews around .. honestly best channel around for off road vehicles ! How does Chevy not make LED standard 🤦🏻♂️
Never ever thought about getting a Chevy; but there's a first for everything.
Love the attention to detail in your reviews!
This is the segment you've been looking for. Great job again....Thanks for the honest review. Not sure why chevy decided to go cheap on a few things.
I’m shocked that Chevy still isn’t using the ice blue tic tac display for the gauges and radio :P
In all seriousness, awesome video and content as always.
I like how GM made the front grille bigger to resemble the full size trucks!
The only thing it has going for it was the interior if he does like it says something
Trail boss is basically the work truck version just with a bit of extra off road goodies
Headlight controls in the menu is a hilarious deal-breaker for me. I want to be able to toggle highbeams as easily as possible from the steering wheel. Am I missing something?
I think they’re relying on auto high-beams, which I find less than ideal.
You mentioned you enjoy the dirt trails around San Diego, any suggestions on which ones to try out? I live in north county San Diego
1 year later and this still looks good. If you want the luxury fluff comforts.... they are available if you want to pay for them. Zr2 or at4x. This is for those who want basics and want to do their own mods. Great truck as is. What you need. If your "want" more.... pay more for the fluff.
This channel is the best. Your video quality is top tier and angles are amazing. I just love how you do it.
The 20" wheel option on the TB is dumb. So dumb.
I think 4H auto in GM base model trucks is my favorite part.
How is the space on the rear seat?
Im not positive, but i think you're looking for a nicer interior to go with the trailboss lift. You can go with a standard GMC Canyon. More things come standard on GMC, including the highest output motor.
Notice at the 6:42 mark the spare tire is a mud terrain tire?
Saw two drivers like that tonight, drives me (no pun intended) insane.
The trail boss is in the category of the trd offroad price wise, yet had no rear locker at least.
TRD OR has a rear locker.
Ryan is the Trailboss!
So is nick
Still don't understand why one would want a Colorado Trail Boss on 20's, when the trim's 18's perfectly fit the off-road theme, both asthetically and functionally (14:54 those are 20's, not 18's).
This black rim trend is starting to go too far
Kudos to the whoever moves the standing camera😊
@@RossMalagarie no worries.
Yeah trail boss looks cool but the wt interior sucks. People say it’s a good value but in reality it’s expensive for a wt midsize truck that’s got a lift kit and slightly wider stance.
Ryan, In 2023 shouldn't all genuine, body-on-frame pickups come with locking rear differentials, trailer brake controls and integrated bumper steps? 🤔
And LED headlights
@@drivingsports Good point but I would still rank the others higher on the pickup list.
I would prefer a selectable rear locker.
So does EVERYONE, except GM management.
Is it possible that the in between premium version you talked about would be the GMC Canyon AT4?
Possibly. Hope so.
What is less harsh off road between this and the Pro 4x Frontier?
What's fuel consumption on high and city road? sir
No numbers yet. And we didn’t have it long enough for our own mileage tests. Sorry. That said, these all do about 17-21 depending on conditions and driver input.
Over 50k CAD for a base model with a factory lift
Hi Ryan, knowing that the Crosstrek Wilderness and the Colorado Trail Boss are two different vehicles, which one did you find more comfortable to drive? Which would you prefer for everyday driving-on the street, through snow, and on dirt roads? Overall, which one stood out as your favorite?
WILD comparison. For day-to-day and plowed snow roads I love the Crosstrek Wilderness.
@@drivingsports Haha, right? Between the 2, my next vehicle will be my daily driver for every season in Pennsylvania and also my go-to for kayak fishing trips. I know I would need to lay the seats down in the Subaru and add crossbars.
Great & Balanced Review
Note: The Upcoming Ranger Raptor has the All wheel Drive Option
Whether its is available in Lower Trims will be interesting to see
Theres not really competition between big three just copying.
The Raptor will be range topping like the zr2 and probably same cost
The Ford F-150 has had All Wheel Drive / 4WD Auto for years
This isn't Copying
Great video as always! How would you say the power felt compared to your Tremor? Just as quick? Faster? Slower?
My reflashed Tremor felt faster. Need to do proper 0-60 to be sure though.
I like your statement on the 4cyl.
I like how you go back to comparing it to the ranger I couldn’t be happier with my ranger
I found the factory rims offered to be either 18 or 20" on their website. 17" is the only diameter offered on ZR2 though
Most likely they integrated more into Center screen because it's cheaper, no wires no switches, I personally only needed the switches when I was testing bulbs, maybe once or twice a decade
Is the new eight speed substantially different from the problematic "hate" speed of the last several years?
Other than slow downshifts no issues with the one in our test vehicle.
@@drivingsports The old version was the class action king of failed transmissions, so I think further info from GM would be valuable info for your viewers. Thanks for the quick reply and best in class, really any class, of reviews for anything driven off-road and on.
Your videos are the most interesting. Did you planned a test with new Nissan Xtrail (Rogue) epower hybrid?
You think the ranger has a nicer interior? I’m dumbfounded
The zr2 gives you so much more, you don’t need any options for the zr2, 48 for the zr2 or option a trail boss to 43-44
Maybe some of the (should be) standard features will have crept back into the TrailBoss by the time I'm ready to get rid of my ZR2 (I paid the same amount for this truck as my diesel ZR2 brand new!).
Im sure you can still install the led headlights after right ?
Was there a tow mode that would have changed the lag on the low end? Not the same apples but asking bc the 2015 Chevy Colorado we have on normal is pretty laggy on throttle (for gas) unless in tow mode.
I can't take you serious when you day the Ranger Interior is nicer. The current Colorado is still an order of magnitude better than the garbage in the Ranger.
Ranger design is old, but synthetic seats with alcantara inserts and a wrapped steering wheel wins IMHO.
@Driving Sports TV Tremor is also Top of the line. Trailboss is actually work truck trim on the Colorado. The Z71 and ZR2 having nicer materials. The design of the Colorado is still light years ahead.
@@terrencejones9817 Tremor XLT is the same price as equally-equipped Trail Boss
@Driving Sports TV XLT trim is equivalent to Colorado Z71 trim. Trailboss is equipped as a work truck, there would have to be a Tremor XL, for you to have a fair comparison .
@@terrencejones9817 technically true, but they’re the same price when optioned equally.
Well balanced review.
Is the new Z71 the same suspension and lift as the trail boss ?
Great video,,I was wondering between the tremor and this new trailboss which do you feel gets better gas mileage,,cheers!
The new ZR2 Desert Boss looks 🔥!
@@drivingsports It looks like a smaller Silverado ZR2, which is great! Lol
In terrain mode, use the + & - on the shifter to adjust the brake pressure. It works in the new Suburban, not sure with the Colorado
Selectable lockers win!
Beautiful truck, but controlling the headlights from the info-tainment?!? That is unacceptable, especially in a pickup truck
Most people put their lights on auto and don't touch them. I don't think it's that big of a deal.
I hope you compare it to your Ranger Tremor
Wait…..are old school halogen headlights doing a comeback?
They just refuse to die. (One benefit of halogens over LED is that the older design melts ice and snow on the lens. LEDs can have ice buildup.)
Can you get the trailboss with more buttons with a package?
decent video,Beautiful truck!!
what trail was that in san diego? I'd love to try it out
5:21 hopefully that 14.6mpg isn’t average from around town
Wait, it's a step down from a ZR2.
It's not the boss, so shouldn't it really be called the TrailAssistantManager?
