Pressure mounts once more on our farm in Portugal as John works hard to get the tiny bathroom in our stone house ready for the arrival of our next guests. There's a lot riding on the success of getting in a brand new eco friendly water treatment system, and we've got a lot to do before we have a functioning space. Crusoe is just the most beautiful little boy in the world, the way he said "daddy, you ok down there?" Awe... And Sawyer smiling at the camera was just the cutest thing I've ever seen.

Awwww crusoe asking if his daddy was fine while he was in the hole was so precious. Sawyers face lighting up when he saw crusoe in the digger and waving back to him was also an “awwww” moment. So many awwww moments! I love your family. I wish that all children could have mommy’s and daddy’s like you. We would have such a better world.

It is so precious to watch Crusoe and Sawyer waving to each other. I think Crusoe has already picked his future profession - a machine operator. Sawyer is content just watching and smiling into the camera. Are you ready daddy - love it. That mosiac cabinet in the bathroom really looks cool.
John is certainly working so hard with the bathroom and the septic tank. I love the way Crusoe is always on hand to help and Sawyer looks on with a big smile on his face they are both so sweet.❤️❤️❤️

We installed one of those septic systems on our farm and it worked perfectly for a large family. It doesn’t need to be terribly big because it recycles the grey water and expels it. One thing though, you need to be careful of the cleaning products that you use in your bathroom. I stuck to cleaning with carb soda which does a great job. I also use an environmentally friendly laundry soap. 😊😊

Also must use septic safe toilet paper!!! Read the TP label. Can't use the tough strong extra soft kinda!!!
Your already eco conscious 👏 so yea using as eco friendly products as is reasonably possible helps enormously with the natural process escpecailly reducing the smells in the hot weather .... and biogradable loo roll for sure....there is a difference having found out the hard way myself...stick a bit of loo paper in a glass if it dissolves quickly thats biogradable -While paper is biogradable some are just slower to breakdown than others ..and may cause a back up 😮 .. peace of mind if nothing else ......❤

The septic system seems like what we put in in the US. We don't have the hills to run the waste water down so it goes in leach lines to soak in the ground.

Crusoe best begin of the morning 'Mario and Digger' can't get better than that and Sawyer smiling and pulling faces at the camera, how cute. The shower is going to look wonderful. John you are certainly taking on projects and jobs that you are not comfortable with but accepting the challenge and doing a fantastic job of it all and with all the pressure. Digger days are our favourite friend, as you can tell the boys love it too 🚜🙏🏼
I would put the shower tray in first, then the tile the walls. The tiles will overlap where the tray meets the wall and divert the water away from the gap between the wall and the tray. If you do the tiles first and then the tray, water will flow down the tiles into the gap between the tray and the tiles because no matter how well you calk the gap, it will fail sometime in the future. Then you have all kinds of problems with damp concrete and mold.

I think in years to come Tara, i see you writing childrens books. The adventures of The Newby's. You must have so many stories already. It really made me think of childhood books like Enid Blyton's adventure series. Especially when Crusoe came over to look at the homemade slide with Obi. Watching Crusoe on that ladder is just so heart-warming! He takes his time and makes sure he's got his footing but he's not afraid of it and it's so lovely to see! I'm quite envious actually as at my ripe old age I'm still all wobbly if I go up more than 4 rungs! 🪜😵💫

Wonderful work ethics for the boys to witness and grow up with. Joel is a true treasure and such a nice, hardworking young man. Got his work ethics from his wonderful father too! I would imagine that the tiles need to go first then the shower tray. By doing so, you'll avoid having to re-tiel the whole shower if you have to fix the tray or underneath portion of the shower in the future.

Add 1 large cup of Agricultural Lime (powder) to you old septic tanks. every 2 - 3 months. Removes the stench/odour of raw sewerage.

Second try on my post. I’m sure you’ve already done it but the shower tray goes down first. Then you seal it with silicone. Then you tile and you do a second seal of silicone. I love watching Caruso’s excitement with the digger. It never gets old. Cheers!

I have shiny white tiles in my bath/shower. The water from the shower stains them which means that every time I shower I have to wipe them and dry them in order for them not to stain. In my previous home, I had dull white tiles and they were easier and did not have to be wiped.
Your boys are so well behaved and polite. Crusoe did a better job climbing the ladder Than you did John. He’s already talking about centimeters. He’ll be helping you around the farm before you know it John. If Crusoe and Sawyer were any cuter they would be beautiful.😊. I just love Obi. He reminds me so much of my dog. Border collie are very smart and you can teach them just about anything. You can even get him to go get the boys and bring them to the house. They are herders They like to herd Ours use to Herd my son home. They’re my favorite dog. Good by newbies have a safe, productive day. Remember John, you work hard, it’s ok to relax. In Kansas shower trays go down first then tiles installed on the wall. At least that’s how we do it here and works fine.
You could use that gap to create a built-in shelf for your shampoos and things and with that tile, it'll look great

It’s all coming along nicely. What a treasure Joao is i bet he is learning tons off you but at the same time he is also teaching you. Hope he is studying something like engineering at university. My partner is a plumber & electrician, he installs the shower tray first prior to tiling so it creates a watertight seal but it depends on the country they all do thinks slightly differently we found that when we migrated from England to Australia.
I like the white tiles. They go with the white accent of the sink counter.
I had one of those tanks installed in Alentejo in 2008. 7 years after when I sold the property it was still going strong!
5 people living permanently with 2 grown up kids coming for the week end. Great system if you can’t be connected to municipal sewage network.

Re septic tanks. When we had septic system we used a product called Rid-X it is a natural bacteria and advanced enzymes start working immediately to break down paper, protein, oils and grease. We would just dump it down the toilet once a month, or more often if we had many guests.
And our septic system had a leach field where the water would leach out into the field. It is whole system. Where I live in California we had special requirements from our county how and where to place it. Because as you can imagine, you would not want to place it anywhere near a well where the waste can contaminate the well water.
You may find Rid-X or Portuguese product that does the same thing of breaking down the waste.
Just having someone pump the waste out is only part of a healthy waste system.
And it makes a big difference what you put into the waste system. Some people only use special toilet paper that breaks down easily and so forth. And it’s good to look at the products you buy as “septic safe” on the label.

You should buy a system for the walls and floor that is waterproof so you don't get a leak; you should also have a pipe down the hole which exits the bathroom. The floor basin should be completed first, then the wall tiles.
