John before drilling a hole in tiles, i was always told to use a strong tape, cover the place you intend to drill into, never get a crack

Similarly, painters tape for a nail hole, plaster won't crack!
Sometimes, I wonder how youtubers survive the criticism and "friendly suggestions" in the comments. I watch your channel and feel and see the love in it. I also appreciate that you don't pander to excitement and entertainment and just share parts of your lives. Work-life balance is challenging, and you are really doing such a great job.

And that sanding is THE most annoying thing while you are building. You may say it's bumming but I hate sanding the walls. Thankfully I have only log-walls in this second house. But sanding shipping containers for our children...oh mine!! I just don't like it either.😂 I could feel your pain while you were sanding....that dust goes everywhere. But well done..you made it through. All the best for your lovely family. Beautiful space again.
You are a good man. If I had cracked that tile, under those circumstances, it would have gone from a family friendly channel to mature audience only in about half a second.

Hi Teresa. Keen to get the wood work in place before completing the grouting and sealing, that way I can ensure it’s all watertight at the same time. Good observation friend.
It takes a couple of days for the grout to cure, so yes, I was hoping he would get to that as well. 😊
Yes, as soon as John showed the bathroom I thought "the grout isn't going to be done by tomorrow for showering." And he probably should have wiped the dust off the walls before painting. Oh well. It is what it is. 🤭

Bread was the program, set in Liverpool and a scouser family called the Boswells - Freddie and Nellie were the parents. Loved that program at the time 😂😂
Hey folks, we just recently painted our complete restoration project. We picked up a Wagner 590 paint sprayer of Amazon. Complete game changer, will never use a roller again and so much less mess. Check it out for future projects. Looks fab tho

We bought an old farmhouse, moved it, built a basement under it and set it down. I tore out the
Lath and plaster. We insulated it, sheet rocked it, spackled it and stopped. We lived that way for some time before we sanded, painted it and finished it.

That’s awesome, I’m looking for an old barn to buy to renovate. I love old Barnes, and I would love to live in one. I would like a basement in my barn too. I know it sounds crazy, but I garden so I can store my garden vegetables and everything in the basement. Who knows if that dream will ever come true, but I’m a keep dreaming it.
Like someone else said, I love how when the boys come ,especially Crusoe, and ask a question, you always give them Your attention. That’s a cool dad. The bathroom looks good John. They should understand, if they’ve been watching, all the effort you and Tara have been putting into getting the stone house ready for them. Don’t stress. Yea get a beer and relax. When drilling any tiles always use cello tape it works my father taught me this still alive aged 85 😊

The walled in flower bed next to the addition you are working on reminds me of a bit of Africa and those flowers are amazing. Crusoe is going to be a builder and he will have a pencil to spare, I love his 2 pencil idea, he is just so lovely and watches dad like a hawk, this is why he wears his pencils by his ears, you got to love him. Primer ? Those fresh walls could have used a good coat of primer before paint . Installing the doors before grouting those tiles leaves you open to potential water intrusion down the line. Also, how you going to get that drain line on the shower pan? Definitely did some jobs out of order there. Wood trim in the bath out to be interesting.
When your done painting for the day or even a few hours, wrap your brush and roller in foil or put in a plastic bag, then put it in the fridge it won't dry out

John you are incredible, no wringing of hands or complaints, just steadily working through, taking time to include the children with love and patience, and hoping to get done on time. Loved Crusoe and his two pencils, and Sawyers proud shout of "toilet". The garden looks good, lots of colour and joy, and the bathroom will get completed. The Oak is a special touch, and I think will look really good across the top of the shower, unless you come up with something you think is better. Love all the progress today! Just a thought on the shower - it looks beautiful as is. A board across the top would make the entire bathroom look less spacious. Maybe just extend the vertical wood trim to the ceiling??

I love your work, guys, but what about the proper insulation for the floor, walls, etc., in the bathroom, and the flooring for the rest of the house, including the extension? Infiltration is one of the worst problems you can have in a house, so insulation is one of the most important things to do if you want to live without mould and respiratory problems in the future. The ceiling is also very important and should be treated quickly. Additionally, removing wasp nests is crucial. Unfortunately, wasps are a plague in Portugal and can easily kill bees, so it's best to get rid of them as soon as possible. Wish you all the best , big hug for all of you. 😊
I put tape over area I want to drill. Just a diy er but that seems to help stop cracking tiles

put masking tape over tiles and drill through it to stop it cracking.. Good luck with timber in the shower.. I suppose the tardigrades and merule will love it...😁 The oak surround looks great. Thanks for the vlog x

You worked very hard John. I do not understand you wanting wood in a shower. Won't it mold? Also, enclosing top of shower stall will also keep moisture in there(more mold). Crusoe's two pencils were cute but I wondered what mischief he got into with those scissors. I cut off my neighbor's curls when I was five because the snip of scissors was a wonderful feeling.
Hi Cody, good question. I’m confident the wood will be fine. Sanded with a very high grade glass paper means the wood grain is well closed and sealed with a decent oil. I’ve seen this work extremely well in wet areas like saunas (specifically the changing areas that don’t dry fast and are very wet) etc. let’s see about finding a way to ensure air circulation that complements the design.

Why is John left to do everything, my husband taught me everything and ai was proud to learn even when I had a son building a 4 bed house with a indoor pool ourselves and yes it was ourselves I done roofing and bricking, cementing, tiling and plumbing and thoroughly enjoy helping and working with my hubby even our son painted bedrooms with us admittedly it took a good few years to get finished .

Important to remember that there is quite a lot more work going on than just the renovations, replying to comments, editing videos, working on websites, and of course keeping a house and two kids in order. Before you drill tile or nail plaster you need to place a piece of tape over the spot you want to make the hole. Masking tape or painters tape will do fine. This will lessen you chance of cracking the tile.
