when I went Florida for holiday as a kid, flying from the UK is roughly 12 hours, this was one of the movies you could watch for free.
I must have watched this, at least 3 times between sleeping, so much so I have parts of this film permanently ingrained into my mind. From the intro in polluted Boston to the last few shots of the film, to the plot point of the Shark wanting to hook up with the girl fish, that one in particular was always stuck with me for how out of left field it is, and your reactions to that reveal was exactly what I wanted them to be.
thank you Saberspark for unlocking those very specific memories in my head.

The movie is as dark as the first one, as two little rays get eaten alive by eels after escaping the aquarium, those same eels get mauled to death by angry crabs, the fact Big D almost succeeds in killing Sammy & Ray, & there's a fish that has gone literally insane from being in the aquarium for far too long, & he doesn't escape, either.

I think that meeting was the only good thing to come out of that experience, aside from learning more about stuff we already had interest in. Fast forward a decade later, and neither of us have a job in our industry. Hell, we don't even have our physical DEGREES because our school required us to pay for them. On top of that, our school shut down not long after we graduated. It definitely was a scam.

This movie reminded me of Dolphin: Story of a Dreamer. It's similar to this movie in quality and in the fact that it is an undersea ocean movie about animals which sucks, but it's also strangely creative at times. It's about a dolphin trying to restore dreams to the ocean or something and the villain is a giant dream-eating barracuda whose introduction is actually kind of cool as hell but then also sucks. When I was like 12 I thought it was the coolest thing in the world
I remember finding it online easily when it came out, but now I had to take a minute to find a high-quality version. With how lesser known it is I genuinely wonder if it'll become lost media in the near future

It makes sense that these divers would release that shark as they just see him as a poor animal being stuck. They were just trying to be helpful and maybe aware that sharks actually plays important role in the ecosystem while at the same time being understandable unaware what's really going on between these anthropomorphic fishes having a stupid triangle drama. If these divers were like in any other anti-shark media, they would just do nothing but celebrating together with the other fishes in the movie over defeating the evil monster of a shark.
The movie portrays humanity as one of the unpredictable elements and forces of nature rather than one single united entity. It could be taken advantage on by the fish characters for solving situations but can also cause situations due to mankind's independent unpredictable nature for the fishes.

Geez, I knew this movie was bad but not this bad. The cuts, the pacing, the lines.
This movie could have been miles better if it just cut off the MC's origins and just started with him appearing in the town- and the origins would be just hinted at with PTSD towards nets, until he overcomes it and defeats the villain that way (He does do so but it does not feel earned at all in the script).
I would rather watch the movie about the nonverbal duck who uses a trumpet million times over this movie.

Edit: OH he is a sea sponge, thanks for pointing that out Aunt fish lady.
    59:07
To comment on the strange morality of Troy the Shark, my personal headcannon is that he snatches the girls that he likes or quote on quote "Loves" and straight up eats them afterwards. Is it dark? Yes. Do I care? No not really, cause this movie ain't all that great in my opinion.
    59:45
Fun fact, sea anemones have stingers, and they can straight up hurt fish. According to google, sea anemones are carnivorous and they can paralyze fish for the purpose of having themselves some dinner. In other words, PIE BE SUPER DUMB.
The reason why clownfish aren't bothered by anemones is because they have a special mucus that makes them immune to their stingers. I excuse finding Nemo because they acknowledge it, but not in this film. Because I'm pretty sure Pie and the Andy Dick fish aren't clownfish. Fish experts correct me If I'm wrong.
I remember watching this movie a lot when I was little & yet I don't remember this movie being my favorite. It's been years since I've seen it again & It's so off putting to see characters designs that range from somewhat cute to straight up ugly af.

While Pi is not a clownfish, there are tons of other species of fish capable of living with anemones. One species that has been observed cohabitating anemones are Carpenter's flasher wrasse, which according to the wiki I found, is the type of fish that Pi is. I don’t believe it’s known if the wrasse can live within the anemone like clownfish do, but it’s not uncommon to see one close to an anemone.

The fact that some designs partly makes this movie not look like a korean production, and the lesson of standing up to bullies as presented by whole reef rise against a shark.

I did some research since this is one of my favourite movies (next to CarGo unironically) and: the average swimming speed of a porpoise is 34 mph. it is 10,085 miles to go from Boston to Sydney, meaning it would take 12 days of non-stop movement. Considering that porpoises would sleep about 8 hours out of the day that would increase it to 16 days (it's not specific exactly what type of fish Pi is, but he is a wrasse, so there is a possibility that his sleep would need to be accommodated as wrasse can sleep up to a week at a time or just all day but being on porpoise schedule all his life this likely won't be needed). Pi would reach maturity at around 1 year. When he's a juvenile he is half the size of his parents which means he's decently far along in his age.
In conclusion: this movie is inaccurate as 16 days would not be enough for a wrasse to mature even at his original starting age.
I love fish and being insane

from what i gather. purposes average about 6 feet. the kid was a bit smaller than the mother so about 4 feet. the MC fish was likely about 2.5-3 feet long before the time skip and was closer to 4 feet after.

I loved this movie as a kid.. and I won’t lie, despite all its flaws, the beginning scene of the parents being taken always made me cry.. more just because whoever voiced the kid really did well and got to me 😂

    TROY!
Good thing I was raised on BOTH Nemo finding AND the reef (also the dolphin)
Also recommend watching “the dolphin” for another sea drug trip

50:23 lol he used the accent because he was quoting a popular movie quote but with the words changed as a parody, it's most popularly known from "Blazing Saddles" (1974)
First used by a character in the 1948 film "The Treasure of Sierra Madre", asked if he was police, where was his badge, and the character states, "Badges? We ain't got no badges, we don't need no badges. I don't have to show you no stinkin' badge!" (Also a similar quote from the 1927 novel the film was adapted from, but with too much profanity to quote on UA-cam)
This line was later famously adapted later to just *"Badges?! We don't need no stinking badges!"* both in an episode of the Monkees from 1967, "A Nice Place to Visit" and then repeated in the 1974 movie "Blazing Saddles", which popularized the line and firmly coined it into pop culture for years.
Weird Al Yankovich also parodies this line in his 1989 film "UHF", in which a character running a zoo in his apartment gets an order of badgers he didn't order and states in distress, "Badgers? Badgers?! We don't need no stinkin' badgers!"
In the second book of the The Inheritance Cycle fantasy novel series, _Eldest_ by Christopher Paolini, a character uses the same parody adaptation when barges are suggested for transportation, so apparently Paolini was a fan of the line.
Also apparently it's been parodied in a couple of TMNT comics, but I haven't read those.
