Pirates of the Caribbean vs Indiana Jones: Masterpieces of Adventure (Video Essay)

- A review of two amazing movies in a genre that is largely underrated for its clever writing and storytelling. Both Raiders of the Lost Ark and Curse of the Black Pearl contain excellent cinematography, pacing, plot structuring, and direction, but in this video, I wanted to analyze these a little deeper to find out why, so that we can learn from it and tell better stories in the future.
It also helps to cast actors oozing with as much charisma and personality as Harrison Ford and Johnny Depp
yeah, though that's a thing of the past. JD vowed never to make another PotC movie coz Disney stuck a knife in his back by canceling him over the now proven to be false allegations of AH and Harrison Ford... I mean he just lost the spark. Just compare his facial expressions of the introduction scene with the golden icon in the Lost Ark where you see excitement, where Indiana Jones is really thrilled by the adventure vs Crystal Skull where his facial expression is grumpy all the time, as if Harrison Ford didn't want to play in the movie; despite the entire movie's existence is coz he kept banging on about making another Indy move to George Lucas who then convinced Spielberg that was actually done with Indy movies coz the ride in the sunset of Crusade was a perfect ending to the trilogy.
The UA-cam algorithm has chosen you, son.
I loved this video!! I have always loved both movies but never thought of why!
Thank you! :)
@@disneymagicfanatic They are essentially both the same genre of movies which is typically written in the Hero Journey's style beat sheets (or more detailed version Save the Cat). Hollywood started to throw these proven plot storytelling devices overboard around 2015/2016 for tumbler writers that have no idea how to write a story. Writers with merits were thrown away to look more politically correct by obsessing on trivial physical traits such as skin color, what is between your legs, or if you had cut off the thing between your legs and whether you had 'the right political color and hivemind'.... that's why modern Hollywood is sooo badly going down the hill lately.
I think more closely related are Indiana Jones and the Mummy though. The mummy is what Indiana Jones actually was supposed to be, but just surpassed it in popularity.
It makes me sad how underrated your channel is! You make great content, and this is your best yet. This is a strong video essay, and it got me hooked on your channel. Looking forward to more! Keep it up and I know your channel will grow quickly!
Thank you so much! I'm humbled by your kind words.
Hella
These are also 2 of my favorite movies and I somehow never thought to put them in the same category but your video makes it obvious that they are. Great video
I've just found your channel through looking for Treasure Planet videos. I'm really enjoying your thoughtful analysis.
Thank you! That's very kind of you!
It's true ! The dinner scene between Belloq and Marion is very similar with the scene between Barbossa and Elizabeth (the present dress , the green Apple, the useless knife, ...)
PS Sorry for my bad English, i learn
I’m so happy I found this channel
This is a great essay talking about both my favorite movies!! Thank you so much for making this! I'm making an adventure story right now and this helps! I agree with everything! Looking forward to seeing your future video essays since I have the same tase in movies you do and I like how you make everything simplified.
Also why does everyone seem to hate PotC? they dumb xD
Thank you so much for your kind words!
always appreciate a potc essay!
Pirates of Caribbean is The Secret of Monkey Island without Guybrush Threepwood :)
Both great franchises, But, Indiana Jones is the superior franchise! Still stands as the best action/adventure films of all time!
BOOM!! Subscribed!!
Thank you so much!
Dead Man's Chest & Temple of Doom: My favorite of each.
I like both of them ❤

I like your video, but I think its far too short to be called a video essay. Would have been good if you talked about more things.
I'm glad you like it! Thank you for the feedback!
@@disneymagicfanatic Thank you for this great video :) It's becoming rare on UA-cam. I would really love to see a video (if you have time of course) where you develop the things you said you didn't have time to develop (such as character development etc...).
Thank you so much!🙏 I absolutely have plans to do that in the future!
PoC doesn't even come close to Raiders!
Yo it's not even close, Indiana Jones is far superior
Indiana Jones is way better than Pirates. Always will be.
Amen
at least give a little credit to Lessons from the Screenplay. A LOT of the things you mentioned, they said it first. it’s uncanny.
Oh my goodness, I'm sorry if there are any similarities. They were coincidental. If they talked about it first, they definitely do deserve credit. I checked out their channel and they make great content!
Please don't dare mention POTC in the same breath as Indiana Jones. The Pirates films fail completely at what the Indiana Jones films succeed at: being completely entertaining, with likeable and relatable characters, and above all simple and exciting storytelling. The Pirates films are just a bloated bunch of stuff and scenes thrown together with no coherence whatsoever. They're brainless, soulless studio 'products' aimed at an audience that has no clue what good entertainment is - probably because they've never seen an Indiana Jones movie (let's forget the 4th one for a moment).
Of course Indiana Jones is one of the greatest movies of all time and far superior to PotC in every way, and yeah, PotC has a lot of problems, but I don't think it's fair to say it's bloated, brainless, or soulless. It's got an intricate storyline and wittier, as well as more creative entertainment than most movies made after 2000. Though I personally love them, I do see your point and how a lot of people can dislike them. (let's also forget about the 4th and 5th PotC movies).
Pirates is a very bad unwatchable film and same for the following remakes of it. Very bad stuff.
5:25 Don't mean to nitpick, but it's just Ravenwood, not Ravenswood
Great video though!
Thank you! 🙏You are absolutely right :)
