That pocket on the bottom of the Atom pack is great for a map. I use the shoulder pockets, which are a bit too high, for snacks and one of the side pockets for water. I’m always amazed when I see a video with Chris camping that he doesn’t seem to use much of a groundsheet. Having paid a lot for my lovely PhD sleeping bag, I use a tray groundsheet and a bivvy bag!
The drink holders on shoulder straps are they big enough for bottles of decent size? They look small. I think he has a bathroom type groundsheet similar to me. He never uses bivy in a shelter. They not really needed. I don't either. Apparently if condensation very bad he might use one then but I kinda get impression it's hens teeth like. Map pocket yes that sounds good use. Next part later today.
A friend likes a 500ml bottle in his shoulder pockets. They will take a 600 but it's too much of a stretch for me to do. And why, given that the side pockets are accessible without removing the pack? Bivy bags add a lot to the warmth of a sleeping bag, particularly when draughts are getting in to a flourless shelter. But, as you say, not needed, unless you're paranoid about protecting a 1000 fill piece of luxury.
For a longer trekking pole to fit the MLD SolomidXL I wonder if a central section with flicklocks at either end would provide a way of getting a 140cm sturdy pole. The flick lock carbon pacer poles have an 18mm upper section and if you could get another upper section remove the handle and replace it with a second flicklock then that could be used to join the two lower sections. That should produce a pole long enough without having to go to maximum extension but would require a rubber pole tip to protect the shelter.
It's interesting that Chris didn't have a standard lightweight wind shirt/jacket with him (or didn't mention it), I know he used to say that it was usually the most used item of clothing on most trips. I guess that Rab Vapour Rise does a similar job and might be a bit more versatile in colder weather. My Buffalo Wind Shirt goes on every trip all year round.
Exactly he used to have all year I think but now I think it's three season and the vapour rise used instead outside three season as it were .... its so light I'd probably keep all time for mo it's especially useful in camp esp in drafty shelters lol 😆 I did get a VR after seeing Chris use so that'll be interesting to try.
Thanks Tony, it looks like it's the Alpine version rather than the slightly warmer Summit version. Yeah, let us all know how you get on with it. Cheers 😃
Hi Tony. Really enjoying your videos. I’m trying to decide between the Duomid and Solomid XL. I live in the PNW of US and would like to be able to do more backpacking (wild camping) in the rain. Why do you prefer the duomid over the Solomid? Does the duomid provide that much more rain protection?
Hiya Protection the same really The main difference is space ie duomid will be bit wider but height length same both take same innernet. I don't think I've said I prefer duomid over solomid xl but if did and probably would mainly due to extra bit of space but waiting to get a solomid xl so can see then 🤔 it's very similar to cricket only door or front different between them... Crick very nice 👌
Interesting points and comments on the Atom Pack and the Xlite. I also am a fan of shoulder strap pockets but found the pockets on the Atom Packs too high for two 600ml bottles because the bottles ended up too close to my face so i sent it to eBay to find it another owner and although i really loved the Xlite the internal membrane failed and its currently with Thermarest being assessed but in the meantime i ended up buying 2 x Expeds which i am now favouring over the Thermarests for pure comfort because i am a side sleeper although they are slightly heavier. I am learning that its never too late to change after being a life long user of Thermarest and my older body much prefers Expeds although if i could put my body on eBay and up grade that i most certainly would . At my age not being a smoker or drinker i will happily invest in any gear that improves the quality and comfort of my adventures because like the Oreal advert says "I am worth it" :) The colours on that Lightwave sleeping bag make me feel warm just looking at it .Thanks for letting us have a nosey at Chris's kit. ATB
I have exped mats at home had for years but prefer lighter Thermarest but yes when I use the expeds they very nice. I'll have to rotate a bit more. The atom drinks holders look way too high. Always great to read your comments thanks 😊
Yes I agree he has a very calming gentle voice full of info n wisdom 😊 Second part tomorrow. Had to do two parts or an hour in one go people rarely watch all but two parts hopefully folks catch more :)
