      He won't even be able to sell it as an RC NGAD. See how easy it was to just see a picture of the jet, and make a copy just like it. That's what China does best. Copy other countries ideas.

    One thing NGAD has that you don't is a computer controlled flight system that is making thousands of tiny corrections every second to keep it flying safely through all parts of its flight envelope. Awesome video and awesome accomplishment sir.

      @@jamesdellaneve9005 Depends the application. For RC aircraft simpler designs that hide control surfaces in the ducts is fine. At mach 2 and the intense heat the generates makes that a far more difficult proposition. Thrust vectoring and/or control surfaces are your practical options for fighter jets Thrust vectoring is cool but adds more weight and decreases reliability. And if you want more steamlined control surfaces for lower radar signature then you need a computer doing those micro adjustments. That's among the reason all stealth fighters/bombers are fly by wire.

      It's called self-defecation. Boomers used to like to do it when they knew they stepped in it back home with the lady... usually on they did it ritualistically. In Japan they have a form called "seppuku." Usually in modern America is it done on Facebook, or some other public venue. The kids call it "simping." But in the 1970s they called it "compensating" if it manifested as a fancy car in their "middle age." Humans fascinate me.
      Pro tip.... Never cheapen the product. Yes. We are treated like products if we are seen as a way to fill a need or a demographic, more than we are seen as people.

    Ya know I enjoyed sharing in your vision and seeing a dream fly before your eyes. Being a USAF AC mechanic retired 30 yrs and an USAF I always thought as complicated as they got. Its seemed we were missed the simple. As another observer stated. Thrust to weight ratio now is key. I saw the first generation Harriers fly a kid and from then on I was thinking simple. Press on Sir. The Age of re discovery is alive 🎉

    I don't think you need to change your thrust angle. The reason you have down trim on the vanes is because it's still way tail heavy. The plane should glide forward with no thrust if balanced correctly. The thrust vectoring should only be to alter direction, not to trim an out of balance aircraft. Awesome start though. If I were you, I'd look at sliding the fan units forward an inch if possible and perhaps change the shape of the nose slightly to give the ability to bring the battery forward a couple inches further. Great work!

      The stall characteristics led me to believe the same! My only question would be, for a vehicle that's designed to only operate under very high speed conditions, to include landing, maybe the rulebook is a bit different

      I think the thrust angle does need to change (point down more at the rear) as he said it was almost ballooning with increasing throttle so maybe needs that as well as some CG change to balance out the on and off power characteristics.

    On a day of interminably awful political videos, and war videos, your video about creativity, positivity, design , accomplishment, enthusiasm, leveraging available tech, and fun was like a lungful of fresh air for a resurfacing breathhold diver. It made me think of Leonardo, Montgolfiers, Wright Brothers, and American ingenuity and inventiveness. And I love that this platform can result in positive comments, freely shared technical advice and not just insults and threats. Great work and please keep it up.

      UA-cam algorithm is toxic and puts narcissism at the front. In the old days... videos normal people put up was the norm. But page views are prioritized by secular needs to sell crap. Our economy forgot people and is paying for it... it's just a matter of time before the masking comes off and they admit it. Don't trust numbers if the definition and data collection methods keep changing. If the prices on the shelves change and people you know are affected, and you don't live in a bubble... trust that.

    In 2005 I bought my nephew a small RC model of an SR-71. It also had no control surfaces. Lift was generated by airspeed and yaw by adjusting the thrust of the two fan motors. We had tons of fun flying that thing around so I can appreciate your enthusiasm. Well done!

    On my experimental machines I place the battery or a tungsten weight on a slider with mechanical linkage coupled with elevator or trim knob to have inflight CG control.. also you may try counter rotating fans if you're not currently. Great work on this concept prototype!

    That’s simply not true. You have a pair of elevons: it’s just that they operate in the jet stream instead of the air stream. They’re still control surfaces

    What’s as impressive as this flight is the way the plane survived the crashes with so little damage, to the engines, the airframe, the electronics; and how fast and accurately the repairs were made to get it flying again. To me that felt like the future! I like the way that you roll. You are a rocking builder

    1:45 Not an aerospace engineer here, but aren't the "Thrust vectoring flappers" control surfaces ? From the title I thought there would be some micro propellers or something to control the aircraft's orientation 😊But it's still a nice aircraft, keep up the good work! 👏

      I'm not certain but I think control surfaces typically means something that interacts with the air around the plane, while these flappers only interact with the thrust exhaust.

      Put a rudder on it, no rudder and landing do not mix. Bank to turn down low and wing into ground does not fly either.

      You are correct by the looks, it's basically an Elevon mix aircraft. They just happen to be in the ducts. And so a spurious title.

      Nice work, but this model clearly is controlled using thrust vectoring. A pretty inefficient way of thrust vectoring. Probably way better to move the exhaust as a whole instead of breaking the exhaust airflow into two parts.

    Suggeation
    Dual tailfins at 10 to 15 deg outward cant. Mount on engine ducts to be in line with thrust.
    Commentor suggested engines forward about 1 inch which would assist in setting CG.
    Again, just suggestions. But otherwise a fantastic job. 👍👍
    Last thought - your NGAD is cliser to a powered lifting body. The thrust vector flight control provides the directional x-y-z axis motion. As such it will always have a lift aspect which will make for slower speed landings tricky nose high attitude approach. While not necessarily a stall to landing, you have to compensate for the lift designed into the aircraft. As you witnessed when flying it, the a/c was quick to climb as the air flowed over the airframe and wings. You might want to view a bunch of SR71 vids showing the nose high landing approach. Bleeding off speed to neutralize the design's natural lift tendancy will certainly take some practice.

      I flew RC before gyros was available. Wonder how many young ones can really fly a model without all the high tech assist. There is no skill in sitting back and let the electronics do the flying while you direct the direction and height.

    Basically this is equivalent of balancing a broom upright on your hand. The vectored thrust is like your hand moving to and fro to keep the broom head from ripping sideways. The further forward the C of G from the vectored thrust the easier it is to balance. The faster it goes means the faster the thrust over the vectoring surfaces thus providing better control authority. The stall landing is as a result of much of the lift is being generated by thrust alone, similar in concept to the STOL characteristics of the Vought XF5U.

    It's thrust vectored on both sides of the roll axis, so it's got pitch and roll. Toss is some motor differential and yaw will be minimal. When I did CG on designs like that, I always had to include the nose shape as part of the wing. All in all, it's a good prototype and a fun watch. A+

    That was pretty amazing so the weight or the battery and further you put it forward it kept the nose down and it’s just controlled by thrust that was amazing to watch and learn a lot.     I am going to make a suggestion about the fans from my experience making flow straighteners that might help with thrust vectoring or might not.
    When your air channel has an 8 to one aspect ratio, unchanged, meaning a straight tube, you get solid, stable, laminar flow.
    Laminar flow may get you more authority with less throttle.
    I don't know if you have room for it, but I would experiment with moving the ducted fans as far forward as possible and then being very uncreative with the channel leading up to your control vanes.
    I bet you could chase that stall throttle down to 25%, maybe lower, if your exit ait was very non-turbulent.

      @@brettm.s.1169 that shape seems to respond very strongly to changes in the centre of gravity, it may be possible to steer with just X and y movements on a table pulled by bands or something.
      Two relatively heavy gyroscopes to change pitch, roll and yaw may work and would be sort of in theme with the thrust vectoring

    Really enjoyed your adventure flying airplane. I don’t know much about planes because I’ve never flew anything like what you’re doing, but I realize that the reason you’re having such great success is the guys in the aerospace industry when they design this SR one spyplane decades ago they really know what the hell they were doing. So the vector controls that are built into your engine exhaust are being used on jet airplanes nowadays anyway but I’m glad you’re thrilled. It was a joy watching you and hearing your comments I gave you a thumbs up and can’t wait to see what you come up with in the near future with a new printer design 🎉😊.❤

    This is basically what looks cool on paper and works on mini model, That's pretty dope.
    Though in terms of scaling this up, with the fuel introduce in turbo jet engine, you're just asking elevons to eat the hot exhaust gas.
    Also restricting tiny bit of thrust with the material in the way. It still looks cool for RC fans in this experiment though, but would be interesting to see an attempt with jet engine.

    Well you just demonstrated something I've been thinking about for a couple years. The best way to maintain stealth while flying is to have (drum roll please🥁) _no control surfaces & use TVC instead._ Any time a control surface is deflected, stealth is compromised. With this design, the jet can maneuver without compromising stealth.
    The one thing I'd like to see is an NGAD that has TVC but also has control surfaces for things like landing and in particular dead-sticking in to land in case of engine failure. The trick is, you have the ability to de-couple the control surfaces from the FCS and then lock them down so they can't move until you unlock them and couple them back into the FCS.
    I dunno how LM is planning on doing the NGAD as far as the physics of flight control, but to me this right here is the way to go.

    To eliminate all control surfaces you would need to have adjustable nozzles off the fans to direct the thrust.

    It has control surfaces, but they only affect the flow from the fans.
    It won't stall, as in having flow over the top separate, stopping all lift.
    It might not have enough airflow to make enough lift to stay aloft, but it won't stall.
    It doesn't have only tiny wings, but a lifting fuselage body (going back to Burnelli and Junkers and others, (long before Northrop or the Hortens).
    From now on, all front-line high performance tactical planes will have lifting bodies, and not just for smooth shapes for stealth, but for increasing L/D and decreasing drag and for better range & payload.
    Sooner or later lifting body fuselage will work its way down into general aviation. See the '70s Boeing model 754 like a Burnelli lifting fuselage body with wings and tail.
    For a similar propeller driven lifting body / integral wing-body plane, see the '40s Eshelman, commonly known as the "flying flounder".
    One which did fly in similar planform see the '30s Moskalyev SAM-4 "Sigma" and the '40s jet or rocket powered RIM-1 and the SAM-9 test plane which flew well.
    Fit it with jets and thrust vectoring like this. Or with the internally pressurized airflow controls in most designs with out moving control surfaces.
    Of similar interest, see the '90s Wainfan "Facetmobile" light plane.
    (though he worked for a major aerospace
    /defense contractor, he knew nothing about the F-117 and if he had, he'd have been legally not allowed to make it.)
    It flew well, quick and efficient on low power, stall-proof.
    Another minimalist airframe wing/body plane which many would say shouldn't fly and certainly not as well as it does, the Rowe "UFO" light plane from Australia.

    Now for the VTOL version! I've been doing research into a silicon foam that would be useful for crashing rc aircraft. Right now any type of silicon foam is too heavy, but there's another material, a metal foam, which can be produced to provide a support network for the silicon foam that binds it's segments together. Silicon casting is done at room temperature, and the metal foam is made at around 1920F. If you'd like to try this yourself let me know.
