      @jimseviltwin1 4 місяці тому +4

      @@JeronimoStilton14 Forunately, they do. A wind tunnel is a perfect example of the application of similitude and modeling . Before the development of computer modeling, a wind tunnel was an essential design tool to examine forces on the scale model of an aircraft under design before a full scale prototype was constructed. But, your point is well taken; a full scale aircraft would need to have similar weight distribution. Accounting for fuel storage and payload would be problematic

    • @JeronimoStilton14
      @JeronimoStilton14 4 місяці тому +1

      @@jimseviltwin1 maybe you are considering similitude and buckingham PI groups as “linear” which I think is a stretch but it’s been a while since I worked with them so maybe they are technically all first order equations and operations, but my point was depending on what you want to study the geometry will not be simply scaled. Wind tunnels are indeed used, but one can’t simply scale a model and have it be an apt comparison of all properties, fluid dynamics is annoying like that lol
      Also side note it looks like the ngad mock-ups have traditional control surfaces so he’s definitely making his life harder by only using control surfaces in the jet stream.

If you increased wing surface area by following the angle of the nose it might glide too, decreasing stall speed will lower landing speed. If he shaved off a millimetre from the vertical stabiliser every time he went out, he should be able to get to the point of flying with a substantially smaller stabiliser (if not without).
      It's a bit like a kid learning to ride a bike. They start on a trike then progress to a bike with stabilisers. Then you raise the stabilisers so when they are riding, the stabilisers are not in contact with the ground, then after a week or so, you remove the stabilisers.
      He's like the kids who have just progressed from the trike and is riding a bike with fully extended stabilisers.
      I reckon within a month or two, he could fly the NGAD clean (no vertical stabiliser), and throw it around in the sky.
      This is just my opinion.

  • @billcedarheath387
    @billcedarheath387 4 місяці тому +4

    So when you said you can’t cut the throttle on landing, does this mean you have zero control at that point? If you have an EDF failure while flying do you have the ability to glide it in safely to avoid damage to property and avoiding people? If not this might not be a safe plane to fly.
    I’m impressed with how it flies. Nice tight rate turns, looks like she handles exceptionally well under power, and she’s scoots like she’s on rails. Job well done from that aspect.
    I need to see a somewhat controlled glide with 0% thrust to put my safety concerns to rest. Control without power is essential at just about every field I fly at.

    • @markd3250
      @markd3250 4 місяці тому

      There are no control surfaces. All the control is by aiming the thrust. If the engines aren't on, you have no control. However, if it loses power it looks like it's just going to leaf fall instead of a nose dive missile drop. You could probably rig up a safety parachute to deploy though, in case of a power failure, so it just floats down. I'd love to see this thing twice the size to get a feel of how it's going to move when it has some mass. In the air it has the look and feel of an SR-71, but with maneuverability. It's really beautiful to watch fly.

    • @dwightpries8330
      @dwightpries8330 4 місяці тому

      Its control surfaces interact solely with the thrust from the ducted fans. Without power it’s a lawn dart. A very cool one though. I’m not sure how you could build a failsafe into the plane for that eventuality. Emergency chute?

    • @billcedarheath387
      @billcedarheath387 4 місяці тому +1

      @@markd3250 I knew the answer. I served in the USAF and was on a design review board as a subject matter expert. I was raising the point in a non-confrontational manner to draw attention to the safety aspects of losing thrust from an EDF failure. Part of enjoying an RC aircraft is doing it safely. I’m not going to go all crazy with CBO and FAA aspects of safe flights. Anyone flying a UAV should be well aware of those requirements. I’d love to see this plane in the air for folks to enjoy. It looks fantastic and a lot of fun. We need to be responsible enough to talk about the safety aspects and challenges that this type of flight control has. It’s easy to fly it around and shout the praises of how sweet she flies. It’s a responsible designer and seller that addresses the challenges and safety aspects. The “what if” aspects need to be tested too. It’s not all about the performance when things are going as planned. This plane is fast and flies like she is on rails. When you don’t have thrust that speed can translate into a dangerous situation.

      @@tray22 Quite true if we are talking about a receiver. In that circumstance you lose control of everything. The EDF is different and that is what I brought up. Changing the circumstances by bringing up different link in the chain isn’t a valid way to address a point of failure.

    If you change the control surfaces of the thrust vectoring and put them into a V, plus slightly changing the shape of the them, you will be able to control pitch, roll and yaw with only these two control surfaces.

    Well done! A vertical thrust vector vane with one servo might be the next step.

    I love everything about this video. Innovation, confidence, success and fun from your own design straight out of your head into reality. Enjoy friend and ignore the usual idiots commenting. They’ve never done anything close to this awesome. See you in the group. Peace.

    BRILLIANT! I was thrilled to watch it; I could only imagine flying it. IS it feasible to make the extremities (tips) modular, as to only ever have to build / replace the damaged extremities? fitted with magnets maybe?

    I really and truly am impressed. Now that you are fine tuning, the true nature is coming out. It can flat fly like it's on rails.
    Now I want you to try some vertical work, including a straight up stall. I'm curious if the flat spin can be defeated without throttle.
    I am also mystified as to why it isn't a lawn dart, but actually flies well...
    Can you fit one of those small GPS speedometers ?? Got curiosity about top speed on 1500mA.

    With how deltas fly, ie; high AOA, you would likely gain much more stabilty by putting the wing fences on the bottom of the wing instead of the top to reduce the wing rock/roll oscillations. Just a thought for you to consider for your next version.
    Nice concept, plus it has a stunningly beautiful silhouette in the sky, you are not so far away from a final version, keep working on it. :)

    you dont need any drag really, you should do a super light glass job, paint it, and slick it up. Id be curious to see how it affects the flight! Regardless, amazing work!

    The "flip over" is probably just the grass surface you are landing on. The nose gets caught and then tosses it over.

    I recently discovered your channel, and absolutely love watching your flight testing videos.
    I can across the batwing, and if you can make that fly, clearly anything is possible.
    A question I have is how do you choose what airfoil sections to start experimenting with on non-standard shapes?
    Or do you just start with a lifting body, and...play?

    awesome vid again and again...correct... thrust vectors... : Control surfaces are aerodynamic devices on an aircraft’s wings, tail, or fuselage that manipulate the AIRFLOW around the aircraft to control attitude and direction....thrust vectors manipulate the direction of the THRUST from the engine/motor.. thats all no biggie.....
