Winter camping is the best! No bugs, no bears and very little people. Just hung out in my hammock at -13F. It was great. Good video and a lot of fun to watch. Take care, Al
I love it! I’m also in a hammock all year. Summer @ 89* fun; winter @ -17* fun . If you can understand insulation, it’s easy, and so quiet and peaceful.
Miranda! We just finished our BSA Scout Klondike yesterday. First time in four years that I've done it where there was a foot of snow on the ground. It was crazy fun but a new experience for our Scouts to manage. This winter I had encouraged my Scouts to practice in their backyards before hitting the event because they can make adjustments easier at home. It's empathetic watching you struggle but I hope you can revisit this cold-weather experience and stress to campers to shake down at home before hitting the snow fields. Keep the great videos coming, it's VERY IMPORTANT (for my female BSA Scouts) to see females enjoying our natural world and taking on new challenges! Erin
honestly backpacking or camping in winter is a progression that test your dedication. You have to buy so many layers and things to be warm. Fun none the less but definitely it takes a lot of dedication to jump into it!
I started my kids with car camping in the snow. they felt like they had an anchor point, like we could bail if they weren't feeling it. they took to it like fish in water. it's just camping, but soggy and cold. the younger they are, the more changes of clothes they'll want/need.
You should demonstrate how to stake down a tent on snow in the wind properly. Normal tent pegs are useless in the snow. The quickest way is to start with a couple of trekking poles (or skis and ski poles) and then add some deadmen (deadpeople??) as needed.
Couldn’t agree more. Stake the tent down properly and use all the guy lines!! Pure Lazy. Doesn’t secure tent yet wastes time making snowmen??? Also agree that the dumping the tent out of the bag on the snow during a windy day would be fail.
Pro-tip: place your fuel canister in a small cup of liquid water (doesn't even have to be hot) while cooking. It'll keep the can above freezing, increase the vapor pressure, and make it burn much better.
"Tastes good. Tastes like whiskey. And I like whiskey." -- Maybe there should be Miranda in the Wild quotes on t-shirts and stickers! ... Anyway, I've never camped in real winter conditions like this, so I enjoy learning about it! Thanks, Miranda!
I don't know about feces, but your body does have to keep urine above a certain temperature (between 90-100 F). So it's definitely a good idea to pee right before bed. I usually pee 1/2 an hour before bed and then try to pee again right before I go to bed
Feces definitely isn’t sterile and the temperature our body keeps our urine is almost perfect for most bacteria. Urine would need to be boiling hot for that to be true. You are much more likely to be cold from getting up in the night to pee if you don’t go just before bed though.
The bladder has its own bacterial flora, 30+ strains at minimum. Like everything else that comes out of us better stuff going in means better stuff coming out
it doesn't have to keep it warm as much as poop and pee are mass which will reach thermal equilibrium with the rest of the body when inside. Eliminating that extra mass will leave less overall mass that your body will need to heat to maintain normal body temps.
A couple more tips that have worked for me in winter camping: Pee right before bed!! “Sleeping socks” - have a pair of clean socks that you keep in your sleeping bag, and stay there! Change into them when you’re settling in your bag. Great video - so glad to have found this channel! Immediately subscribed.
A smaller tent or more people helps. For one person and a dog/kiddo in winter, a 2 person 4 season tent can maintain 10+F warmer than the outside ambient air temperature. My six year old son and I went on his first winter camp out, no snow unfortunately which that looked fun. But, 26F outside and 37 inside, he had my wife's zero degree bag, and slept like a rock. I had the Nalgene trick up my sleeve in case he got cold. But, my old Sierra Designs Omega 2 can zip up all mesh which that and rainfly trap a fair amount of body heat inside. REI, she's a real treasure, keep paying for her backpacking adventures!! These are fun and hilarious!!
I just stumbled across this show. I absolutely love her! Miranda is so endearing, knowledgeable, and just so cute and funny. I am loving binge watching all her episodes. I haven’t stopped laughing. This show is greatness!❤️🌈😊
for the tent "platform"... allow the snow to set up for 30 minutes after you have made your flat area. you will find that the surface becomes much stronger.
This video was such a joy to watch! While I love REI, Miranda has such a light hearted and fun personality I'd watch it just to see her and the adventures she has.
11:32 I used this tip this past weekend for camping in 35F weather (as far as I'm concerned that's arctic temperature). It worked GREAT! The nalgene bottle really held heat. (And I bought it at REI lol)
.YAAAAYY !! Mirand's come out to play !!.......To actually enjoy extreme cold weather camping ,, get hot tent setup,, canvas tent w/wood stove... conventional backpack tents(even 4 season are miserable).. . Good tip on the layer under the air pad,,makes a huge difference.. closed cell foam or pad sized reflectics ,,( car window sun screen works well ),, under body core..and can be used as sit pad on the snow seat at the Cafe' ... ...Looks like you all had a good time ,, and why not ...
I spent all day today planning for my upcoming (first) winter backpacking trip in northern minnesota and I am somewhat apprehensive but very very excited. You would not believe how happy I was to see this video show up! I've missed you Miranda! Was such a fun video, I felt like I was there with you and helped me to be less afraid for my own upcoming adventure! :)
I invested in a dehydrator/food saver recently, and have yet to actually make my own backcountry meal. I would love a series of Miranda in the Kitchen, showing how she makes her favorite meals (the red curry sounded so delicious!)
Really enjoyed this clip, Miranda you are priceless. I’m a outdoor guy from Scotland and find a lot of your vids fun and informative. Keep up with this format.
Dear REI, I love camping, kayaking, etc... I've been doing a lot of a camping and I recently had to tap out on a cold weather camp.. Love your gear and did some kayaking instructionals. The instructor noticed I used to do a lot of white water kayaking based on my paddling holding. From a former Eagle Scout.
Miranda, I just want to say I love your videos. I’ve been a professional singer on cruise ships for years but recently, during my off time, I’ve been trying to get back to my Canadian backcountry roots from when I was younger. I’ve been doing some solo portage trips into Algonquin and dreaming of the day when I move full #vanlife/backbacking and really travelling all of NA! Keep up the amazing content with your cute, quirky nature! It’s always entertaining and always informative.
"so I don't have to blow my own bacteria ridden breath into it." Then proceeds to blow into it. lol I've done the same thing. Glad to see another video.
Nah. Bernoulli forces and stuff mean that most of the air that reaches the bag when you blow at it from a distance actually comes from the surrounding air. That also lets you effectively get more air per breath.
So much Miranda, its more-anda, merry more-anda-mas. It is customary to celebrate with whisky flavored whiskey, the release of bodily gases, and casually mentioning poop.
Hahahahahahaha!!!! That was GREAT!!! It looked like you had a really fun time, Miranda--and the Macarena at the end was the icing on the cake! Hahahahaha!!! Thanks for sharing your adventure with us! I loved it!
My buddy and I would go camping in the winter next to a stream and it was just big enough and cold enough to make a shuffle board carved into the ice. It was so much fun
This will be my 3rd year camping for new years in Wisconsin. Last year it was 4° actual temperature at copper falls. Hoping for slightly warmer weather this year.

This is what I am thinking, especially for thru hikes. My biggest concern would be trails on or near vertical drops might be dangerous.
HAMMOCK? -13F?!

I would buy it and then some! 😂🤣
Lentil soup is insaaaaane! Definitely gonna make myself a big fat batch of it if I ever go snow camping.
The happy flapping @0:31 is adorable and how I feel every time I’m in the snow.
Yesssssss Miranda is the light we need in these dark times. Camping BOSS!!
Nala always is the star of the show! She is adorable in her sleeping bag.
I'm happy that REI has such an upbeat and fun ambassador!
Everyone should strive to be as awesome as Miranda
Miranda has such a wonderful weirdo spirit I love watching her adventures :)

So, what this video proves is that Bigfoot doesn't hibernate.
Yes he makes a guest appearance at the end
When you were making up a funny song to sing to your dog it was extremely relatable. I sing improvised songs about and to my dog all the time. 😂
I camped in Big Bear, CA in the snow Nov 2020 for the first time too. The low was 8°. Had tons of fun. I'm glad to see you back Miranda!!!
