- I let Alana know I spoke with a mom of a 10 year old girl who is unhappy at her current school who may want her to be mentored by Alana. Of course she is interested. We discuss what mentoring is, including the role of asking Socratic questions (Alana mentions that she sometimes has that moment of "getting it," which she loves, from the questions) and we talk about the role of mentors at her jiu-jitsu dojo in helping someone become a better person.
All of my work has been inspired by Plato's Meno, where Meno asks Socrates, "Can virtue be taught?" Without addressing the challenges inherent in that question, I am pleased that Alana delights in those moments of recognition that arise through questioning and is eager to become a mentor to others to help them become better people.

“If I were living anywhere near one of your schools, that’s where I would send my kids, because that is the closest approximation to what I did with Laura, and maybe a much better environment, because there are other kids around. The way that you do education is pretty much the way I did education with Laura, except that you are a pro.”
