  • With 144k dislikes to only 30k likes, it's clear that the new Dragon Age: The Veilguard trailer has upset the Dragon Age Community. Here are my thoughts on why I think this is and my thoughts on the trailer and future of Dragon Age in general.

I think the biggest reason people got upset was time. People have been giving Bioware the benefit of the doubt for around fifteen years now. "Bioware magic" and all that. So the trailer just so happened to be the straw that broke the camel's back and it blew up harder than it did on both Anthem and Andromeda. That's my interpretation at least.

We're not upset because we had to wait this long for Dragon Age and that the trailer sucked (which it did, but not for the reasons you think). We're upset because we were expecting Dragon Age, not Fortnite/Overwatch lookalike trailer with comical relief and Pixar characters (even the monsters looked cartoony). The only thing I see of Dragon Age is the one shot where the dragon roars with the statues in the background (looked cool :) ). Even when the logo was revealed for BioWare it just looked upbeat... same with the music and character intros and the humour. NOTHING about it is like Dragon Age. Look at all of the other trailers from Dragon Age franchise (and I mean all of them and you will get what I mean).

    • @Kylesico912x
      @Kylesico912x Місяць тому +1

@@srevdar Not quite what I meant but I understand your point. It's not the wait but everything that happened during the wait. Andromeda, Anthem, constant rumors of live service DA4, constant rumors of marvel tier writing in DA4, etc. Then you get a trailer that shows that it's still that live service, Marvel-esque style of game and it was the perfect recipe for a PR disaster.

The thing I don’t like about people complaining about the art style is that it seems like games that aren’t trying to be ultra realistic will fail, at least that’s the propaganda they’d have you believe. I think it mostly has to do with diversity (which is irrational) and people pushing agendas that put the game in a bad light. I love that BioWare doesn’t discriminate and tries hard to be inclusive, I think it’s why they’re successful and that makes conservatives upset.

    • @amberanime
      @amberanime Місяць тому

The thing is, while of course ''anti woke'' groups will use this game as another temper tantrum excuse, they wont affect sales. Because they are not the majority of the already established fanbase of dragon age. Dragon age had gay/diverse options from the get go. Anyone who has a 0 tolerance policy for gay or any kind of diversity in female characters or skin tones would not play or support this game franchise at this point regardless what DA4 would look like. My point, while this diverse cast will draw negative attention from a certain crowd, chances are this crowd isn't currently playing dragon age anyway and will influence a total of 0 sales wise.
The people who ARE playing dragon age however are also pretty upset with a lot they have been shown. Dragon age has a large diverse fanbase, and that fanbase is not upset with the casts diversity, but with a long list of other things. Art style change, tonal shifts, fewer and not controlable party members, only 3 ability slots. There are some complaints about character design (but more in the sense of that they look to safe/generic/not memorable) and that all of them just seem to samey in the sense that all of them are portrayed as cool in some way. Very guardians of the galaxy. Which is not a feeling everyone relates too. It feels to action hero and a bit immersion breaking, which makes it harder for people to connect to these characters or care about them.
Long story short. Yes there are conservatives who are upset. But these are not the people bioWare needs to be carefull. Their established community is also not impressed right now. And that is bad news for them. of course it's wait and see until the game is actualy for sale to see if the established fans who are upset with the new trailers are a majority or a minority. Right now though In my personal circle I know 2 other people who love DA. One is a super fan of origins who's passion got me to try the games and turned me into a fan as well. That friend has no hate, but also no hype for the game after seeing the trailers, when before it was his most looked foreward to game of the last 10 years. My other friend also is dissapointed. Not to the same degree, but enough to make it go from top 3 most anticipated games of 2024 to not being on the list at all anymore.
It's not fair to imply that diversity alone is why people are complaining about artstyle. Because again, the fanbase of dragon age has been pretty diverse from the get go. I think most people genuinely just dont like the art style for a dragon age game. Another game fine, but not dragon age. I'm in that boat at least.

Tonal shift, character design... I have to say I was genuinely shocked by the trailer and my first thought was this was a Fortnite cooperation, and then "that's it, Bioware is dead".
The gameplay trailer, to my own surprise, got me out of that feeling of total doom, it looks a hundred times better. But I'm not over it, for me personally Bioware's writing and character design declined a lot during the series to the point I'm not interested in the characters anymore. Everyone's introduced as a master of their trade, the absolute superhero and Mary Sue, with a flashy introduction cutscene where they show off their best move, say an ultracool thing, everyone looks impressed - and once in the party you have to revive them constantly. ;) Then follows the usual formula.
I miss the hero journey, the lowkey characters, a little subtlety and less powerfantasy. Maybe that's why Harding was such a fan favourite, but when did she turn from shy and socially awkward to this new level of cool? Well, maybe it'll get explained.
TL;DR - I don't trust Bioware's writing anymore, and that's sad to say about the studio that once set the gold standard - but others have simply taken over and are miles ahead with character writing and even meaningful romances now while Bioware seems to be stuck and just tries to make them look cooler.
I'm still gonna give this game a fair shake and probably play it on or soon after release, but the excitement isn't really there anymore. Well, one huge plus is that at least it isn't the open busywork of Inquisition, I still have a burnout from it. :)

Definitely looks way too cartoony/overwatchy. I couldn't put my finger on what I didn't like to begin with but managed to reduce it down to mainly music choice (go and re-watch it with a bit of the DAI main theme playing in the background feels like a completely different trailer), some of the new character design feels more like it'd be at home in divinity original sin and some of the UI and sparkly particle effects just feel off to me.
From a marketing point of view if you have to go post concept art and release the community council to deal with the the trailer response then you've failed, there's no nice way to put it.
I'll be waiting to see the gameplay footage on the 11th but this hasn't excited, hyped me up or even made me curious about the game only left me quite apathetic, and that's coming from someone who has pre-ordered the collectors/signature/inquisitor editions for all the other games and been waiting 10 years for more DA.

Spot on that the tone is way off from this dark fantasy world. Love the upgraded graphics in the trailer. If the games graphics are at a comparable level, that will be awesome. But the trailer's tone & graphic titles feel off-brand.

The where we going to find character is probably the player character. Their face is covered so they could be any of the races male or female.
    The tone wasn't serious.
DA has always been very serious.
That art reminds me of Astartes which is a warhammer fan made movie. Not accusing the trailer of copying it but the end of the fan made movie does have some similarities with this trailer and the fan movie btw was made several years ago. Astartes is a very beloved fan made movie.
As you mentioned some people have been allowed to play a little of the game so as to give Bioware feed back and they seem to think the game is going to be fine.
I think a lot of us are skeptical. There's the anti-woke people who don't like the director. I am ambivalent about that.I don't think it matters but some people do. There;s EA getting Bioware to lay off staff some of whom have been there for years. There's the problems with severance and benefits the laid off people were suppose to get and weren't getting and they sued/filed complaints against Bioware. And EA is still EA with that empty suit Andrew Wilson still being CEO. So all those add doubts.
I promised myself I would not buy another Bioware game. I did not buy the Mass Effect remaster that came out several years ago although I am a big Mass Effect fan.
Lady Insanity has been a BioWare fan for years .Her and her friends. I don't have a problem with these community people. If they like the game fine.I hope it is good. If it fails EA may cut the leash so as to speak. EA is well known to kill studios.
I doubt I will change my mind and buy the game. It would have to be on the same level as BG3 for me to change my mind and buy it and I doubt it can achieve that.
    Good luck.

Gearing the trailer to casuals is one thing and good business model, however if the game is completely different than what the trailer advertises they'll be very disappointed, ask for refunds, give crap reviews and get a negative opinion of the franchise and company. While also doing the 'getting the band together' aspect of the 'Honor Among Thieves' D&D Movie trope.
We learned very little about the game itself. What's the big deal this time. What are the stakes? What is the scope?
Nope, just NPC's doing 'hero shooter' posing and quipping, and social media chatter about who to romance...

It's the end of the world but let's have a party. They PG13'd it and if it translates into the gameplay and the story? We're up the proverbial creek. Especially if you like Mass Effect more. DA fails? It will likely take BioWare with it and Mass Effect is never going to happen. Just going to get the rug pulled right out from under it. Dragon Age is still running frostbite which makes the shift even more crazy. Lets not use existing assets and improve upon them. Nope, do it from scratch, change it all! I have an open mind, but this was too jarring to be left unchecked. IMHO if the community council had any pull they would have all told them this trailer would have been a BAD idea. I fully suspect it was EA's doing here.
My wife said she isn't bothered by the art direction just as long as the story is good. And I agree with that. I don't like the art but it isn't bad at all. But if the art takes a 180 what's stopping them from taking the story straight with it? Hoping we get to see some real dark Dragon Age stuff tomorrow at the gameplay trailer. With the community reaction they better add some real stuff to counteract the poison. Because the fortnite messaging just wasn't it.

To be blunt Im not sure that this generation of Devs is capable of the human interaction part of the story. I knew he wouldn't be the main villain, but the fact the entire thing was dreadwolf, all that lore build up, hearing dread wolf as a slur since da origins, and then this all waiting a decade hyping solas getting this major spot just for being 'yeah its not about him' was he even in the trailer at all? it feels like someone stole the da name, made a fanfic without playing the prior games, and didn't give a heck about the fans. I keep seeing videos about Bioware going _"Hard Woke,"_ and tbh, with the Cori person championing the _"DA has always been exceptionally queer..."_ line that hurt the game a lot. It certainly didn't tank it, but could it cost them a million sales and a million EA Access subs? Yeah, it could, because after the trailer, the gameplay, and the proudly woke comments, that takes a huge portion of the audience away. The game may be great, and no more _"woke"_ than any of their other projects, but when it is celebrated as a selling point it is a fail. You do not gain more DA customers by taking sides. If there was a Bioware Dev that listed themselves as a Straight Cis Ride'omancer I assume that would irk a handful of people who lean more to the left than a typical gamer...but outside of game journalists it would probably cause far less of an uproar.
I'm hyper-woke sensitive atm, and besides not seeing any attractive women with _"Yikes she is sexy"_ bodies while all the dudes have 6-pack abs (again) I personally did not get the _"Woke"_ vibe from the trailer or the gameplay vid. I did get the _"OK, people made a stink about Inquisition going to far into button mashing RPG styles as opposed to veering back towards the more strategic real-time-with-pause that was Origins. After the commercial and critical success of numerous games in the genre, along with the ridiculous praise towards straight turn-based strategical CRPG's, DragonAge is leaning into...what? Hard action? Ugh, the story better be great because this is not what millions of us wanted."_
We know it is way to late to pivot again, and after almost 11 years, the criticisms of Andromeda about _"Uglifying"_ women, making the men essentially stupid, with the more recent trope of women always having to be slightly more powerful along with a straight white guy being the big bads, there are just so many ways this can be spun into an _"OK, here we go again. Damnit. Stop trying to appeal to a modern audience that does not exist _*_IF_*_ that comes at the expense of the audience that is already loyal."_ I was happy to hear that you can romance any character you like, as in Inquisition for instance, the only character I was really into was, of all people, Sera. Being a guy that was obviously not possible, but hey, such is life.
Back to the gameplay itself...it looks...fine. It's not what I wanted, but it's not God of War-like which would have had me, for the first time in my entire life dating back to Baldur's Gate 1, not buy a Bioware game. Sorry, but I am just not a fan of the new GoW. The combat is far to easy, the puzzles were for people with high 90's IQ's and just above average hand/eye coordination with a mouse and keyboard/controller. Lol, and yes, it did push the "woke" angle far more than it should have, but not to the point where I couldn't ignore it. I simply didn't enjoy the game. Luckily it was short enough for me to plow through. This looks more like AC: Odyssey, which oddly enough, I said in a post a week or so back that if it was going the more action route was something I thought could work in DA as long as we still had companions and Mass Effect levels of control over what they did.
I want another Mass Effect game, so queer lesbian gendermancer or not, I'm buying the stupid game. I don't care if games have a ton of LGBTQIAP+ nonsense in them, again, as long as it does not take away from what the other 95% of players want. Most people aren't from San Fran, Edmonton, Montreal, Boston or New York, so the _"7% Identify as..."_ doesn't hold up when you start interviewing people from outside of these massive college or megatropolis artsy cities. Irl, it is probably closer to 1%, so aiming squarely at the minority and saying _"But we've always been inclusive"_ is idiotic. Things are not inclusive when you have to exclude a huge portion of your fan base. Adding additional things to appeal to a minority is awesome, as long as it does not require *excluding* the majority. Heck, even in Inquisition they made Morrigan's boobs smaller because they did not want her being over-sexualized...except in Origins, that's what she was! If you were not into her, she basically "R" words you for your seed after a failed seduction. Then new people come in who don't understand her and argue with the fricken creator (Dave Gaider) about how he is wrong and coming at it from a white male privilege point of view? Dave Gaider? A gay dude. Is told a character he created is simply wrong because straight guys find her attractive in a sexual way? So the solution? Easy peezy, she had a child and went down from a 34 large C to a 34 small B.
ME Andromeda. They hire Jayde Rossi as Fem Ryder...then they distort her face and make her waist bigger while thickening her neck. Why? Because it is not realistic for a woman to look like her. Irl, it isn't realistic for a trans woman to look like her. That is a horrible standard to set, and I'm pretty darn straight but someone like Blaire White would beg to disagree. Just make the game as a fantasy. Chicks should be silly hot, and boobs are good. Guys, who in the west are 1 in 10K likely to have visible abs after 18-years-old should have them as well. But, don't make all of the men look like an Olympic Gymnast or elite powerlifter while making the women look like someone whom a man could easily cosplay as. Lol, it is a fantasy game. Make everyone silly attractive and call it a day. That would alleviate 90% of the bad press these games get. Again, I'll fall back to Baldur's Gate 3. Super woke if yuo choose to play it that way; but if you want to go the straight sexy route, that's fine too. I didn't notice a bump where the Adam's Apple should be on Shadowheart.
At this point people are so touchy that even a hint of _"If you are queer you will love this game!"_ in the marketing is going to lose the majority of the fan base that follows this game online. We have people appearing on mainstream media saying this game is dead (same with Fable) because of the gender neutral women they keep pushing. Enough is enough. When you design a game for 1% of the actual population, don't be surprised when you get a 75% sales drop off. If you also change the gameplay style people want, again, don't be surprised if people decide to not invest their money in your project. It's not a homophobic thing, it is people finally understanding that when a company implies a game is not made for you, they mean it. Oh, and btw, Corri, or Corinne, wtv...She lists herself as a queer no operation transgender female...isn't that just a guy who cross dresses but likes women? I've been trying to figure it out but am at a loss. Worse, why the heck should that even cross my mind when thinking about a game I have been waiting for over a decade?
I just wanted a followup to Inquisition in more of an Origins style and instead I am wondering about one of the devs pronouns selections...wth?

@@aceovrzero361Progressive values are what propelled BioWare into popularity. This is not just a bad take, it’s untrue.

What concerns me personally is that the trailer focused far too much on fighting rather than atmosphere, which leads me to believe that it will be an action game with a few RPG elements. I just can't imagine a Dragon Age with this childish look, where demons drive humanoid creatures in the veil mentally insane, where disgusting and brutal brood monsters instill fear in you and tear everything apart in their path, where magicians in the circle go mad and cause a terrible massacre... and not characters who happily hop through the veil as if it were an amusement park, or characters who constantly crack unfunny jokes as if they've come straight from a Marvel film, and not Goofy monsters that look like they're from an animated children's movie... I'd also be interested to know if there's a character editor or if it's a pre-made group... Bioware hasn't done itself any favors with this trailer! I'll wait for the gameplay reveal, but to be honest I don't have high hopes.

Showing a cute little asian sweetie pie jumping out of the Veil with a big ol' smile on her face, followed by a straight up Disney butler looking guy surrounded by cartoony skellies...It was a jarring 1:2 punch. The Veil isn't a cookie jar that you can sneak into for a bit of fun. It's a realm of madness. Like the meme says "one does not simply 'jump' into the Veil."

Is it me or every character except the two dwarves and the old guy have african faces? Even the elf, plus he is black. That's....weird. I'm all in for inclusion but this seems a little bit too much.

I have played many BioWare games. From Mass Effect 1 to Andromeda. From Dragon Age Origins to Inquisition. I really enjoyed the combat in Andromeda but I bought that game on release. The animations and dialogue was terrible. The MP seemed like a step down from 3. Mass Effect was one of my favorite series until Andromeda, and that game really left me feeling like some if the magic was lost.
Then I played Anthem. Game was fun for a bit, but as a looter shooter it had glaring flaws that could not be excused. Anthem was the game that told me the BioWare I loved was no more. I enjoyed Inquisition and I have tepid hope for Veilguard. But that trailer was not what I wanted to see. It seems like a new generation of BioWare marketing people put this out with zero understanding on what the Dragon Age series is about. The Darkspawn in the trailer looked goofy too so I am worried about the final game.
