I don’t know what the deductions were supposed to be taken off for that under the 81-84 CoP but I would think that it would have been more than a tenth. Wouldn’t it typically be around .3? Carrying that over definitely helped her all around score and gifted her a spot in floor finals.

Either way, I can’t imagine that 9.9 was a fair score, I don’t know what the code was during that quad but I can’t see how she could have gotten higher than a 9.7.
The booing was definitely nationalism but her full-in at the end was short of rotation. She had to step forward and dance out of it because she didn’t really have control of the landing. Points for terrific difficulty but in my opinion there was a reason not to give her a 10 on that routine

Incredibly difficult to finish with a full-in and I love me some Kati but that was an obvious execution error that should have prevented her from getting a 10. Julianne’s tumbling was easier but everything was landed cleanly. Very curious scoring. I think they gave her the 10 because doing a full-in for the last pass was maniacal back then. The competition was wonderful but for me, although my allegiance is to the USA, the Rumanians, especially Szabo and Pauca, were in a different league. But it was thrilling to see Kathy Johnson get a medal. Only with the advent of Shannon Miller, my all time favourite gymnast, did I think that the Americans really had arrived. And now they are clearly, by far, the very best in the world!

Mary Lou la única de Oro que ganó fué en la competencia individual pero Ekaterina se la lleva por mucho pues ganó pues ganó 4 de Oro : Equipo, Viga, Salto y Piso, siendo la única de plata la competencia individual, lo que deja mucho que pensar y cuestionar el triunfo de Mary Lou, me parece que la favorecieron los jueces, si es buena pero no tanto como Ekaterina que se llevó en las narices de la dizque Campeona Olímpica 4 Medallas de Oro. Además, la rutina de piso de Julianne era buena pero no tanto sólo era linda y bien ejecutada, en tanto la de Ekaterina era con más dificultad y también con gracia,le ayudó su carisma y a Julliane los jueces pero obviamente su rutina no era mejor que la de Szabo, así que me parece que fué el 10 imperfecto de Julliane vs el 10 perfecto de Ekaterina, y la verdad fué mejor Szabo, Julliane era linda pero hasta ahí. Think a little before commenting. Ecaterina Szabo scored a 10 because it was a spectacularly orchestrated routine. The full end was still being perfected in the 80s. Hence, the less than impeccable landing. However, it doesn't take away from her vibrant presentation and high difficulty. Besides, Julianne McNamara scored a 10 before her with her uninspired "prancing" and a double twist at the end. Now that was a ridiculous, undeserving 10!
Gael Garcia Bernal It was unheard of to end a routine with a full-in back then but it’s not accurate to say the move was still being perfected. Not everyone could do a full-in but the ones who did weren’t struggling to land them. Case in point: look at the full-in Kati did at the beginning. Gorgeous! Phenomenal height and execution. The one she did at the end definitely was short of rotation. It’s obvious. I get why Julianne got a 10 even though her routine was easier. There weren’t any clear deductions. Kati’s routine was superior in every way and she should have won but she definitely got away with a less than stellar final landing because she threw such a difficult trick at the end. I don’t think either routine deserved a 10. I would have been fine with both getting a 9.95.

And saying people were still perfecting a move and that is why she deserved a 10 is one of the dumbest comments I have read. And FYI, McNamara should not have gotten a perfect 10 either. Yeah. Great tumbling but not perfect. Julianne had more grace, but Szabo was rewarded for that tumbling.
