  • Originally I had planned to go hiking in Sweden this summer. Well that didn't happen (for obvious reasons). So I decided to try and improve my arduino skillset.
I found this video ( • MIDI Music Box ) online and figured that I could try building a similar device. Now after about two weeks this first prototype is finished.
It works perfectly (aside from the noise of the servo motor gears). I don't think it is that bad. I could obviously reduce or even remove the noise by adding a contact microhpone or editing the video but that doesn't make much sense.
In the final version I will probably decouple the servos better from the rest of the machine and add more padding around them. Other than that ... I personally love it.

    I wish servos were quieter

It's almost identical, so I don't doubt he's got some inspiration from him

They've referenced it in the video description :)

I know you didn't ask for advice but hope some of this may help you on your final version:
Well, if you want to reduce the noise from the servo motors moving (aside from using sponge on the lower base of the servos), you should put some thick rubber between the upper layer that attaches and tied them up as strongly you can (so it doesn't vibrate more because of being loose) the rubber would reduce the amount of transmision from the engine vibration through the servo onto the wood and then it wouldn't be as amplified. And well there's obviously that noise from the plastic engine moving (you can lub it and get rid of some of the noise but the movement gets a little bit sloppy), obviously the better solution would be to replace those 31 servos with the model that uses a metal engine (the MG90S) since it's a little bit more quieter.
