I’m new to cycling and this vid helped me. I love driving on the 395 to Tahoe and have always thought about just cycling it sometime. My entry level Specialized would probably not fare too well with that trip if I were to do so because on the hills near my house, I’m wobbling just to try and make it up like you did.
*love* that area in general. you'd be surprised - entry level bikes nowadays are pretty capable. it's more about the gearing. i decided to put an 11-40 cassette in the back, which would help dramatically with the really steep stuff.
I am so inspired by your journey and excited to do this route in the first week on Nov. We are are group of newbies based in California, would love to get your feedback on our plan and want to know more from your experience. Some of us have done Mt. Whitney climb but Badwater to Whitney Portal is something that is completely new to us, distance, elevation and weather, any guidance is highly appreciated.
Hi - I think I speak for the others when I say that you'd be more than welcome to join us. And feel free to train with me as I ride / hike to prepare for our trip in November. I can be reached at HobieScout at gmail.
Your bike was severely undergeared for the gradients. If it's not 50/34 or less on the front, install it. Install 11-40 cassette on the back. I have in with 105 groupset. Nothing wrong with road bike really.
Thanks Andrey. I had the choice to take my hardtail mtn bike. I stared at it for like...a good 30 seconds before I hit the road, lol. I am battered, but not beaten. I'll go back and finish the mission next year. But really, your advice of a road bike with the proper gearing is the best solution.
Depends on your gearing whether you're grinding or not. Much lighter than an MB. I'd rather ride a rode bike and not have all the rubber resistance of the fat knobbies.
Your mistake was thinking you can eat anything. Calorie wise you can pack it in but Mc Ds???!!! That was the nail in the coffin. Fuel a Lamborghini with low octane dirty fuel and it will not perform. Awesome attempt though👍🏻
where's the footage of you shooting the bike?
Bob Barker rounded up a bunch of PETA signatures to delay the shooting, and then adopted it. Trust me - I wanted to shoot it :)
Wow that is one difficult attempt. You accomplished what most people would never thought of attempting. Hats off to you sir.
Thanks, but not that impressive considering that some of the party then went on to hike to the top of Whitney and back in one day.
i'm a spinning guys too, which is one reason why i change my 11-28t cassettes to 11-36t to handle hill climb, overall, great video, thanks for sharing

Yes, maybe what i need to do is tweak the gearing on the roadie. I'll try again this year!

You're probably spot-on. I have a better plan for the next attempt. Thank you.
