    I think technology is fantastic, but to vibrato ir a little fake, it is too repetetive. Real player makes vibrato always different, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. If there could be some vibrato speed control or round robin that would be great thing :)

    • @Soundpaintmusic
      @Soundpaintmusic  Рік тому +1

      We do have speed control over vibrato. The most realistic way (and I wish had demoed that too in the video) is to modulate our Rack - Time module to modwheel. This will either increase or decrease the speed of the natural vibrato. Works surprisingly well.

    Tawnia, Troels and team: this is history in the making. Congratulations on having the vision and the guts + stamina to pull through and make this new tech a reality. Ever since I became aware of the VI world and started getting my feet wet in sampling, Troels’ presentations always stood out to me. Why? Because of the obvious love for music, the enthusiasm that sometimes even overwhelms himself, the personal takes on things and above all the humanity.
    Again: a HUGE congrats from me, and I can’t express how excited I am to finally experience H.A.L.! ❤🎉

    I'm a little confused. I though H.A.L. was more of a Soundpaint thing but I'm seeing new releases on 8dio with it. Will any 8dio instruments/voices be released also for Soundpaint?

    • @Soundpaintmusic
      @Soundpaintmusic  Рік тому +1

      H.A.L is exclusively in our Soundpaint Engine. We will both be releasing original H.A.L releases in Soundpaint, but also port and update a variety of 8Dio libraries into Soundpaint, so we can benefit from H.A.L. It simply isn't possible to do this in Kontakt primarily due to differences in file formats and architecture. Soundpaint runs in a proprietary file format called Real-Time Samples and H.A.L was programmed in heavy C++ to support things like true polyphonic legato with sustain pedal functionality etc. Things not possible in Kontakt.

      You are correct. We actually had a long debate about this internally, since I kept arguing for putting it in brass. I think it should be mentioned that, as I understand it, the H.A.L technology is still beta, correct?
    After buying this instrument, it shows a lot of promise, but it is buggy. I find the volume of the notes to be inconsistent, with it sometimes dropping very low for no apparent reason, and getting stuck low for a while before somehow going back to normal again. Seems to be some issue from going in and out of legato mode at certain times. Also, certainly note combinations have jarring artifacts that are very distracting from what is otherwise a beautiful sound. Doesn’t matter what velocity you use, or what the mod wheel position is. It’s clearly a bug. If you turn off the beta H.A.L. mode, these go away.
    Also, if you play outside the natural range of the instrument the legato speed is not adjusted properly, so the transitions take too long and become very choppy. Maybe this is intentional or unavoidable, but people should be aware of it.
    I note that the tenor sax instrument seems way more solid, (if you stay inside the natural range of the instrument, otherwise the transitions are choppy) and is a joy to play. It’s just that this soprano sax instrument is not quite ready for prime time, in my opinion. Eagerly awaiting for when it is.
    I should have stated earlier that these soundpaint instruments are an incredible value. Absolutely blown away how these $20 or $30 instruments compare to what else is available.

    To be absolutely honest, growing up in the 90s, were in TV cheesy Versions of Sax Solo's were used to underscore nearby Everything, I wouldn't name Sax as one of my Favourite Instruments to say the least, but this sounds quite Fantastic!
    When You Guys mention that this Pack/Program is with the new HAL which comes Tomorrow, does this mean that only new Instruments specified as with HAL, can use this or am I able to use the HAL Function now also on existing Packs/Programs which I already own for Soundpaint?

    • @Soundpaintmusic
      @Soundpaintmusic  Рік тому +1

      Good question. So just like we have UDS (Ultra Deep-Sampled) instruments already - H.A.L does require legato samples to generate new ones. We will be doing H.A.L upgrades to certain current Soundpaint libraries, so they can benefit from it. But in short H.A.L instruments are uniquely in their own category.

    I'm not finished watching this, but when you get a chance can you explain how to adjust the vibrato rate? For example, When you slow down the time of the sample, is there a way to speed up the vibrato so it sounds more natural, like would be available in SWAM or Sample Modeling?

    • @Soundpaintmusic
      @Soundpaintmusic  Рік тому

      Yes. So we have natural (not artificial vibrato) in the samples - meaning the vibrato is how the player performed it. Different velocity layers and programs have different intensities. The way to control the natural vibrato speed is to go to Rack > Time and then Right Click on Rack > Time > Speed and choose Add Midi CC Automation and then wiggle whatever controller you want to control the speed. The benefit of this is that its real vibrato. So when you use it on our Savana Alto Flute for example - you get that almost fragile/nervous Jamer Horner sound when speed is moved up and the vibrato gets faster. I personally prefer real (player/performed) vibrato over synthesized or modelled. There are so many small and beautiful human imperfections in the natural vibrato. Cheers, Troels.

      @@Soundpaintmusic Cool, thank you very much for your reply. This is a wonderful effort on your part to give musicians more expressiveness. I'm not adverse to that way of proceeding, although an option to switch to traditional vibrato rate and depth would be awesome (or maybe at least implement it for some patches). One thing I do seem to have an issue so far in Soundpaint,with the libs I have so far, is that there seems to be quite a low level of output, so that the master volume on Soundpaint. DAW mixer levels at max isn't enough in some cases (like for some ambient wash type presets). If I adjust my monitor levels I risk blowing out the speakers Anyway, it could be just me, but the level control on the Soundpaint Engine seems calibrated for lower than usual output relative to my general experience with plugins. Its easy to workaround, and maybe there's a reason for that conservative approach out the gate on a new Engine like this.
      One other thing that is very important to me is that I would like to be able to more precisely edit the velocity curve, beyond what the presets allow. I'm using a few different keyboards and one is what Pianoteq considers "fast" meaning the player can play soft but it will always sound pretty loud regardless. There are specific curves needed to correct this and I think Soundpaint provides 5 canned choices for this. For many instruments this may not be huge, but I think for piano it is, and there isn't a particular workaround for this one (I'm trying a few free tools from 15 years ago, LOL.

      @@cachelesssociety5187 Agreed. We are gonna be issuing an update soon that equals the level of all programs. If you want more volume - just add Effects > Compressor LA2 and push the gain up. @cachelesssociety5187 Рік тому

      @@Soundpaintmusic Great news! Yes, I tried the compressor and it worked and didn't introduce much coloration from what I can tell. Also, is there a video that explains the basic premise of the articulations in general - in the Soundpaint methodology? I don't use a lot of orchestral stuff cuz I'm mainly a guitarist, so this is taking some thought to get my head around. For instance for sax, if I want to have some mono legato, but also to play mostly legato but have some polyphony occasionally, is there a kind of overall setup that will switch between these two. There are quite a lot of options and in a few minutes of playing I still haven't made headroom in understanding it.
      I have another goal just now that makes a different example. Say I am playing what would in reality be the parts of 2 sax players. One is playing legato melody higher up. The other is playing marcato bursts lower down. I haven't learned how to key split in Soundpaint yet. And when mono is on, glide seems "too sensitive" lower down. That is to say, that I wish to make a very fine adjustment but tiny movements in the glide time slider are affecting the sound too much. I know that CTRL-mouse works, but then I'm unable to play keyboard notes to listen to my result. Could you guys maybe add a "fine adjust" radio button at some point?

      If you’re wanting to simulate an ensemble, one thing you can do is load multiple legato parts and link all parts in the legato module, so their legatos are the same, unless you want them custom. You could just use one legato part, but on unison lines it would sound like a solo, which is why you choose two or more. Personally, I would probably choose two maybe three.
      Then if you wanted to take things even further you could start panning the parts a little to give a more ensemble feel.
      For example, load a Tenor and Soprano sax part/s together, adjust playable ranges to be realistic, and then pan accordingly… just an idea.

    It sound awesome! I bought the tenor saxophone and it's great, it's just one thing I'm a bit confused about. As there are no keyswitches, how do we switch between articulations? Do we need to setup 4 articulation parts, use the matrix to mute them by velocity? Or am I missing something? Thanks :)

    • @Soundpaintmusic
      @Soundpaintmusic  Рік тому +1

      A couple of different ways. A lot of composers use expression maps in their DAWs, which don't require keyswitches. You can also just load a couple of different instances with different articulations. The reason is partially because Soundpaint has notes on every key, so the keyswitches obstruct that. But its also a more personal thing for me. The keyboard is the only place we have to make music in the computer. So by banning keyswitches (at least for now) - we (as developers) are forced to try to find other solutions. For example that you can just play polyphonic legato like a piano - or you get 127 discrete velocity layers both on modwheel and velocity based instruments. But thats just my take on it - and it does seem like the community wants keyswitches, so we will probably add them relatively soon. I just won't be using them myself for the reasons stated above. Cheers, Troels
