I just noticed this seems to reference both the Challenger Disaster, which broke up above 35,000 ft (closert to 50k IIRC) and Challenger deep, which has been measured at 35,755 to 35,853 ft deep.
It Continued to climb far above 35,000 feet after the explosion.
makes me think of the Arthur C. Clarke novel, Childhood's End.
