Chasing the Empress CP 2816 into Minnesota | May 1-2, 2024

- After months of planning and preparation, I finally caught up with "Empress" CP 4-6-4 #2816 in Hankinson, ND on the afternoon of May 2nd while on her "Final Spike Tour" to celebrate the CP and KCS merger. I then chased her down the CPKC Elbow Lake Sub to Glenwood, MN, where the train would tie down for the night. The next day, I would see the Empress pass through my hometown of Maple Lake, MN, with the rainy conditions making for a beautiful show of smoke from the funnel. This, as far as I can recall, is the first time in 17 years that a steam engine has passed through Maple Lake. I then went to Medina, MN, where I caught the Empress one final time before she entered the Twin Cities metro on her way to Union Depot in St. Paul. Hope that everyone enjoys the video and be sure to like and subscribe for more!

Nice chase and catches of #2816. CP #2816 is one of my favorite steam locomotives now.
Thanks for watching!
Honestly I think she looks nice with her ditchlights
Agreed. It *is* possible for ditch lights to look good on steam
a CP steam locomotive pulling train with sights, sounds, scenery actually happening in our time.🎉😅
Kudos to CP and all the talented, skilled, dedicated people that helped make this happen. 🎉❤
Thanks to train spotters for video. 😊
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Great catch! Nice that they removed the ditch lights now that they are in the USA.
Thanks for watching!
Yeah. Wish that it can be removed in canada too. :(
Great video, well done!
Thanks!
Great catches awesome chase and nice video of 2816
Thanks!
Awesome footage!
Thanks!
Love 💕 this today, cool to see Minnesota.
Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed watching this video. Was this mostly through Central MN? Surprised there is no snow there and trees already leafing out. I wonder if anywhere so far on the Final Spike Tour starting in Calgary if it has run into any snow or winter conditions.
Thanks for watching! This video was mostly shot in west-central MN which had a much warmer than normal winter. Thus, things are greening up faster than they usually would. Even then, this area typically doesn't have snow on the ground in early May, though it would've been cool to see 2816 go through such a scene. As far as I could tell from other UA-camrs covering this train, there was no snow even going back all the way toward Calgary where it started. If it had gone through the Rockies west of Calgary, they may have encountered some snow, however.
The day it left Calgary was one of the nicest days we’ve had this year. Don’t worry, the snow and sleet have come back since then! They did a test run out to Carseland early last month, there was still some snow on the ground for that one.

Anybody know what time they normally leave in the morning? I'm gonna try and catch her on the way to davenport thru Pingree grove
Usually around 7 AM. They left Glenwood, MN around 7:15 AM for reference.
Nice CP 2816 Steam Engine
Thanks for watching!
Ya no ditch lights
Well done
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful shots but please don't let foaming dictate on how you drive. Double yellow on a curve could result in harm to you and many others. That's what gives fans a bad bad name.
Thanks for watching. Yeah, that was my bad. I will try to do better on the next chase
Chase that steam engine to Mexico City
