DR. NO | James Bond dispatches Professor Dent

  • “That’s a Smith & Wesson and you’ve had your six.” James Bond ruthlessly dispatches Professor Dent in DR. NO (1962). Three versions of this scene were written; in the first Dent fires an empty gun and then Bond shoots him dead, the second had Dent fire at Bond, miss and Bond fire in retaliation, the third had Bond shoot Dent before Dent could get to his gun. The first option was the one used in the final film.”

So is Sir Roger Moore. Check out the death of Scaramanga, lied in wait and shot by Bond, much like as we see here.
Stromberg's death was also just as ruthless, shot four times, two in the groin, two to the heart
Blofeld's death, as silly as it was on the surface, it was long overdue revenge and no matter what the reason is, picking up a wheelchair-bound archenemy and throwing said wheelchair-bound archenemy down a smokestack is a cold and cruel death.
Locque's death was also as cruel as it comes, kicking a man's car down a cliff and saying said man has no head for heights is cold as it gets.
Octopussy, killing near 100 people in the pre-title sequence alone in the attempt of destroying a plane while evading a surface-to-air missile. Said missile destroyed the plane, killed the colonel he was sent to impersonate, and nearly 100 guys in that hangar
Shooting four guys on a train, no words, no quips, no nothing.
Mowed down 10 guys in Kamal's palace, also pretty cold and cruel.
When one thinks of Bond, one of two men come to mind, the only two men who were knighted for their portrayals of Bond. The two men who one, created the the onscreen character, set the standard as well as the ruthless side of Bond, the other portrayed the charming gentleman side and a reminder that the cold, cruel ruthless side is still there.
When one thinks of Bond, no matter who gets the role in the future, two men will always come to mind: Sir Sean Connery and Sir Roger Moore.

For anyone wondering...the reason Connery says "that's a Smith & Wesson and you've had your six", despite Dent CLEARLY using a Colt 1911 (which held seven in the mag and could hold eight total with one in the chamber) was because the script initially called for Dent to be using a REVOLVER in this scene. But at the last minute, someone decided they wanted Dent to use a suppressed weapon.
While revolvers CAN be suppressed, the only gun that fit the bill and was available to the production team at the time was the Colt 1911 with a suppressor on it, and so that is what they went with. Unfortunately, they switched guns and then never changed the line of dialogue to more accurately describe the gun that Dent ended up using in this scene, so Connery pointing out that Dent is using "a S&W" is simply wrong and sounds ridiculous, even if the line itself is a great one.
Also, as other people have pointed out, Bond didn't even really have to count the rounds because once the slide locks back on the 1911, it's empty. But that again points to the fact that a revolver was initially called for in this scene...without counting the six rounds off, there would be no way to know if Dent had another round or two left in the cylinder had he actually been using the S&W revolver that was initially in the script. But as you can see in the video, Dent DID fire off six rounds and his gun WAS empty...he simply was NOT using a S&W revolver as Bond claims, and the Colt 1911 he was using should've had AT LEAST seven rounds in it, and it could've held as many as eight.

@@neo-filthyfrank1347 Not neccessarily. Firing seven or so shots before checking is actually intelligent for two reasons.
      1) If Bond were a light sleeper, then getting close to check the face would mean risking Bond waking up and tackling Dent before getting a shot off.
      2) Firing 2 or 3 shots might not have been enough to kill or disable a normal human being, especially in the hands of a "less accurate" gunman like Dent who might not hit any vital spots. Being smart enough to know that, Dent firing all six or seven shots would have insured keeping Bond either dead or disabled enough not to get up right away.
This "assassination" would have worked for almost anyone. It just so Dent was dealing with a high level operative who planned ahead.

@@learningleisure2202 Lol no I'm not buying it.
      1. If you already have a gun pointed at someone there's no way in hell they're going to be able to do anything before you can shoot them. The second he sees him stir he'd shoot. He'd hardly need to get right up on his face to confirm it was a human.
      2. So what. If 2 or 3 don't do it then shoot again. The victim does not have enough time to do anything. The assailant would shoot, see the person move (thus confirming it is a person) and then shoot again. The victim isn't going to pull some black magic before he gets shot again.
It's laughably dumb that someone coming to kill someone wouldn't confirm where the person is. And not checking behind doors is one of the most obvious things there is.

Connery looks a lot like the Bond in John McLusky's Daily Express comic strips.
Dalton has a certain dignity to his appearance which I really like; I can even see some similarity to Hoagy Carmichael. In my opinion Fleming had it exactly right, by the way, when he cited Carmichael; I think a harder-edged version of the composer is an ideal image of Bond.

For me an Ian Fleming James bond novel, when I read it in bed at night is better than and drug there is. I have all the Ian Fleming James Bond novels. I'm on my 5th time of reading them all the way through. RIP Sean Connery (my favorite actor of all time).

The second shot is one of the coldest Bond moments ever.

Bond's subtle facial expression at 1:08 is amazing. "You aren't getting out of this room alive Professor."

So he fires three shots, then three more, and the slide is back, so that means he’s out of ammo. Then he picks up the pistol and the slide is now closed. He must have seen the slide back and saw he was out of ammo. Then when he dropped it, the slide must have returned into battery. He fired on an empty chamber. Bond doesn’t miss much.

Lots of people commented about the gun being a 1911 or that it has more rounds than that. The Smith & Wesson Model 52 is a 5+1 38 special 1911

And first produced in 1961 according to Wikipedia so would have been available to Dent.

Problem is that Dent's weapon was a Colt 1911. More, when he initially fires it, he empties it and the slide locks open. Later in the scene, the slide is closed imparting that it is still loaded. A serious mistake in terms of continuity. What's interesting is that I picked this up as a child when I saw the film for the first time.

And it went to slide-lock after only six shots. I read somewhere that the script was originally written for a S&W revolver, but they didn't modify the dialogue after the prop was switched to a 1911.
