Correction (at 4:22) -- You don't actually need one free-body diagram per degree of freedom, but it happens to be true in this and some other constrained systems. For example: A point-mass moving in two dimensions will have only one free-body diagram, from which you can write two independent equations, fully resolving the two degrees of freedom.

Matthew Kelly And if you have a planar rigid-body in two dimensions, you can get three independent equations from a single free body diagram.
