New NVIDIA Shield TV 2019 Review

- What's better than one new NVIDIA Shield TV? How about TWO. And one of them is shaped like a tube. On one hand what we have here is a pretty iterative update. On the other hand? It's still the only Android TV system you should even think about buying. Plus it still has GeForce Now gaming and is a great choice for cordcutters.

For many years most movies have been filmed in 4k and more reacently 6k - 8k. It's then mastered at 2k for theatrical distribution and down scaled to 1080p for DVD/bluray/streaming. Eventually they'll release the native 4k versions of most movies/shows from the past 6+ years. Interestingly, most network cable shows are still filmed at 720p because they have a set production pipeline using the original editing equipment/workflow that the series was started with. We filmed for the Bachelor last season using a Canon C300 mkII at 720p lol
6:03 Dolby Atmos was in the previous devices. That was one of the main selling points of the past devices...
Dolby Vision is the new feature.
mcsportslover if it had offered hdr on youtube I would have bitten but I am a hard pass now. I wanted dolby vision & hdr on youtube and prime. I wonder if we will ever get a atmos/hdr/dolby vision that works on everything product.
The old one does DTS-X as well as Dolby Atmos
@@happyrappy it does upscale 720p and 1080p videos to HDR, but it doesn't upscale live UA-cam TV channels.
Anything pre-recorded and uploaded it will upscale.
@Scott 1 I have a atmo's 11.2 system and if I remember right I wan't the shield to have dolby vision and youtube hdr. I have a oled hdtv.
Wow. 1st time I seen your stuff. Was really easy to watch and understand. Thanks man!
They should of added more RAM and more internal storage. 4 to 6 GB ram and maybe 64gb hard drive.. I'll wait til they really do upgraded to buy another one..
Ikr. Instead they downgrade to 2gb ram.
I mean wtf ?😳🙄
@@slevinkelevra5901 they are greedy for sure lol
@RS1 they don't have upscale capabilities, this does.
Great video, can you pair Bluetooth headphones, and use it that way?? For the late night watching and not bothering others??
Yes you can. I have the 2015 model and use Bluetooth buds all the time.
I would buy it just for the find the remote feature.. Great unit , My old one runs strong
Thank you!
You helped me decide on the tube.
I don't do hardcore Android gaming.
Need something better than Roku that lets me play casual games.
It's just $50 get the pro
Try and run a CPU benchmark test of the 2017 and the 2019 Pro. Proforms the same, even the “new” CPU is the same hardware name. 25% faster? No. New features and remote? Yes.
My tests with antutu showed them at 260,250 for the 2019 model and 240,500 for the older one, that's an 8% increase.
@@Rspenesmit I doubt if anybody will ever notice an 8% difference.
@@john26262 I agree with you that almost sounds like another way to get more money out of you for the same old stuff
I've seen numerous videos comparing benchmarks between the two versions. None of them came close to a 25% speed increase. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a class action lawsuit based on that bogus claim.
I just hate this PRO devices coming with paltry storage I mean 16GB in a Pro device is crazy should of been alot more the OG Shield TV Pro had a 500GB HDD in it. and 8GB in the new base model is nuts I think at a minimum we should of got 32gb in the base and 128 in the pro. These prices they should easily of been able to increase the storage. I mean all they did was add the Switch Lite cpu in it and change the remote and the base model design and call it a day. Don't get me wrong I love my OG Shield TV. I just expected more from Nvidia.
Not only what you said but Nvidia should offer a gamer version with the game controller. I am looking to buy one but have to buy the controller on top of the new one they should offer it or at least give you a discount on one.
@@brianperry4815 16GB jesus. what is this 2010 i have a shit ton of flash drives that have triple the storage lol
@@darkfog360 yeah all that porn takes TONS of space i bet🤔😂
It sucks had better luck with higher end non certified devices .
Good news about the new remote being available for purchase for older 2017 models
I've seen universal remotes for both Android and Roku and look alot like the new Roku remotes. Saw at Wally world.
Do I need the pro if I’m just going to stream my games from my desktop using nvidia gamestream via my home internet?
HDR also got updated to Dolby Vision.
I just found out the tube version runs on 32 bit software when the pro runs on 64bit_-_
Shield TV had Atmos, it lacked Dolby Vision which is new.
Sounds like no point in upgrading to me
You can actually get better performance from overclocking your old unit, something you can't do on the 2019 model (yet).
It is much faster at accessing content - iPlayer/Prime etc than my brand new TV. If you hide this behind the TV or an amplifier be aware you might not be able the stream 4K videos without it stuttering, it requires direct line of site to your router or as close to that as possible, if you can, use an Ethernet connection.
I was about to waste my money buying a firestick, thanks god this video was recommended to me, I just bought a Nvidia Shield TV Pro, waiting for it to come the extra $50 was worth it for me since I'm not planning to replace this box anytime soon👌
EddyGraphic how is it treating you?
The prices mentioned have gotta be US$. In Canada the Shield TV is $199 and the Pro is $486 (?!). I understand the exchange rate bringing the non-pro up to 199, but wtf is up with the pro?
Thanks for this review. I'm not a gamer but I do like my tech and want a really good steaming device. Not too happy with my Amazon devices. Watched 5 reviews and you finally answered my question! Thanks. We do like the Amazon line up can we still get the same Amazon prime / Amazon studios shows on this line boardwalk empire et al? Thanks again
Dolby vision and Dolby atmos are both supported via playback of local files? USB and network shares for example...
Atmos was NOT MISSING from 2017 version
Do you think both will be Google stadia compatible?
Yoooooo glad he is back I swear need that math for the game again.
Great review, How could I add a DVR to this system or should I just go with youtube tv that has a DVR option?
Android TV actually has a free built in DVR that you can access via the Live Channels app. If you hook up a network tuner like an HDHomerun, you can schedule recordings and save them to local storage.
The tube is 32 bit, the pro is 64 bit! You can't run 32 bit applications on the tube!
Was gonna mention that. Same retro console emulators won’t even install.
I think I'll stick with my current shield. Great review as always
Does it work good? I was thinking about the shield pro but if it's almost the same as the older one I'll get the gamer version as I like retro gaming. Heck older games suit me just fine.
@@brianperry4815 I got the 2017 model and its blazing fast and plays anything you throw at it. Plus pretty much any Bluetooth controller or accessory works with it
@@brianperry4815 yeah this isn't an upgrade anyway really. Better remote ( but not as good as some third party remotes) and dolby vision. To be honest dolby vision is overhyped anyway. 2017 is great.
I really wish my harmony hub remote has a mic, that's the only one I miss about the remote on the Shield
@ModernDad
Great info MD. Im think when taxes hit ill grab one of these invidia shields, im using my xbox for everything until then. I wanted to run old nes/ snes /n64/dreamcast games on it aswell. Would the pro be my only option or would the 150$ version be ok? Thanks man be blessed.
No UA-cam HDR support again :(
I'm pretty sure that's an Android TV / Google limitation, not an NVidia one... but I could be wrong.
@@timking2600 Google limitation? NO, Google owns UA-cam :) it's x1 processor limitation (can not decode vp9 hdr)
Vasil Otiuridze bc not a lot stuff are hdr on youtube
On my Xiaomi Mi Box 3 the SoC is capable to decode VP9 Profile 2, but the original UA-cam app is still streaming in SDR, no matter what.
If you put Smart Tube on the device, it plays happily HDR UA-cam videos just fine. But the system integration is not that great, especially the casting feature.
So it's not just the device's fault to not support HDR on UA-cam.
You forgot to mention an even bigger change than the remote and that's support for Dolby Vision!!
Which on average looks worse than hdr10. Not much of a selling point.
Thanks Dad. Good review.
I guess shield is still king but there is ROOM FOR A NEW KING
Does transcoding with Plex work flawlessly with the new 2019 Pro version?
Not if you want to stream 5.1 flac music files I found to my horror
1gb less ram and no plex server on the tube that kinda sucks. I guess the 25% more power is all used on the ai upscaling because according to benchmarks they are the same as the older versions.
i can't really decide:
This or xiaomi mi tv box ?!!
It sounds like the remote finder spells out N V I D I A in morse code! How cool is that!
Whoa. Seriously?
@@Moderndad Yep! Listen for the -. ...- .. -.. .. .- when you click on the remote finder.
@@daveschmarder-1950 That would be very slick.
You didn’t even bother to get the new shield pro...why am I here ?
Apart the remote is a nightmare, triangle shape,, you can't pick it up without hitting a button by mistake, and the Netflix alone button is a nightmare, to accidentally touch 😭😭
Worth the upgrade? 🤔
I'd say no. Just buy the new remote if you want
Can you get live tv on this device such as Philo TV? Are Pluto TV, Peacock, and HBO Max available with this unit? Am I able to cast media from my phone onto the tv with this device? I'm not happy with my Roku streaming stick+ as it overheats quite a bit, and freezes up as well. It seems like it's way better quality than what a Roku is. Are you able to do video calls over the tv with this? I don't like portal, so that would be an extra perk for this unit if it does that!
Great video and nice info on the tec about this new shield. I am so glad that you did not say that this was good for IPTV. Alot of people buy the shield and tell me Oh I have a shield like its the best thing! Not for IPTv its not as it needs to install a 3rd party iptv player and none of them are able to use 4k. 2 thumbs up.
Tivimate works amazing on this product
@@jaredtucker6879 DuplexPlay app is ALOT better for a device like this for iptv.
@@MyiptvWorld Awesome I will check it out
Any chance they added the option to internally decode Netflix’s DD+ (and maybe Atmos) to standard DD 5.1, instead of just passing it through?
Whats the best way for the shield to see my movie folder on my pc ?
Change the music
other YT videos indicate that NVIDIA is trying to pull a fast one...the processor appears to be the same and provides the same scores, no "25% increase". Something odd is going on
Nvidia could face a class action suit for misleading customers.
Looking to the latest Nvidia reviews and payments, is this supported by them as well? lol
Let me sum Nvidia Shild Pro up sharpish like.If you want it for Wi Fi only stay well away from it,works really well on Ethernet cable
Sorry, but I disagree. Just got mine yesterday, and everything works flawlessly while wirelessly connected to my Netgear Nighthawk router. Maybe it's your router?
Honestly, it's like I just replaced my TV for $200, plus got a great deal on the controller at my local BestBuy for $33.
@@DMan-ud6bt Mine worked flawlessly for the first 10 days then the Wi Fi issues started, the Nvidia forum is full of similar problems.
Thanks for this awesome video!!
I would like to know which stand could fit the new 2019 pro version?
Amazon offers 2 stands: Pro stand and shield stand.
Those should be exactly the same thing.
Great video man. Thanks. Heard any news about problems running Netflix on a 2017 shield? It resets the box in my setup - having worked for over a year. I can’t find anything online so factory reset the box. Still no good. So disappointed. The shield has been SO good up to now. Any advice?
Nope. My old one was fine.
Both my 2017 units are working fine.
My 2017 shield runs warm, I put a small fan under it to help cool it.
Thanks guys. I got totally fed up with my shield. Kept crashing in Netflix and stuttering in Plex. So I ditched it for a new, 4k, Apple TV. Problem solved. I installed Bluestacks on my MAC for anything Android that I still need (cyberflix etc) and the Shield is now permanently powered down. RIP Shield.
Hmmmm not worth the $ to upgrade to me. No wonder it hasn't made a big splash.
That was great. thanks :)
I’m kind of bummed they didn’t do a native air mouse... I use an air mouse on my Nvidia shield and it’s not smooth because it’s not really supported. Also I hope the Wi-Fi is better… The last generation shield Wi-Fi was horrifically awful...
Great video! love it!
Thanks for the video. How can I watch movies from my external HDD using this Tube?
Shield doesn't support youtube hdr
So the AI enhancement only works on content 30fps? So nothing on streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, UA-camTV, etc.? Because they all stream at 60fps.
I just want to know if streaming 4k movies and streaming netflix, prime video, etc will be considerably better than the 2017 version.I just bought the new if 65c9 oled and want my baby to shine.
If the 2019 shield runs anything like the native webOS apps, then definitely. I stopped using my 2017 shield for 4K playback because it only had HDR, whereas the native LG apps support Dolby vision
The tube has onley 2gb ram😳
What about Kodi? Can you put Kodi on it And how well does it run?
I don’t understand the Atmos support vs the 2017 pro that I have. My AVR switches to Atmos or Neural X depending on the content. Why advertise for Atmos as a new feature while the 2017 already supports it?
I think I meant Vision. (Forgive me for getting that backward.)
The 2017 version lets it passthrough, but doesnt natively support it. Hard to really distinguish but it depends on the content being played if it is local vs streamed.
@@Moderndad I don't think you mistaken it. It's all over the place, they put emphasis on Atmos & Vision. IMO even Vision should be supported through firmware with the 2017. A great upgrade would have been HDMI 2.1 & Variable Refresh Rate. Is the new 2019 sports HDMI 2.1?
I think they mean ATMOS with Netflix, which doesnt work with the old Shield. I hope they fix it also for the old Shield with a firmware upgrade.
Does the ai improves the picture quality on a Full HD monitor too?
What is this used for if you already have a separate Roko box?
The old ones already player Dolby Atmos and DTS-X via Plex or Kodi, is Dolby Vision - Atmos working on Netflix, Prime etc?
Yes. It's native Atmos now, just like god intended.
I would love to know why Dolby Vision isn’t supported on the 2017 device.
Bill Frost They say it’s a license matter, manufacturers must pay a fee for every piece of equipment to Dolby.
I have a couple of questions maybe you can help me out, I bought the new shield and I have an older model, I did all the testing the last few days, my antutu tests were 260,250 for 2019 model and 240,250 for the 2017 model. I don't know but is that 25% faster. And why do the utility apps like cpu-z show it as being the same specs and processor as the 2017 model. Also at $199 is the Pro model worth spending the extra money over say buying a 2017 model or a 2019 Amazon fire cube which I tested and it was very fast with the 922 processor.
Its the same box, its a scam. They could put the upscaling on the old boxes if they wanted
I like your videos
Pls tell me URGENT Does any Bluetooth gamepad ( 26 $ game pads) work for nvidia shield tv pro?
Hey Modern dad. Thank you for the review. I have a question. I currently have the older shield pro. The one with 500 gb. Would you say is worth updating for the new one or not enough differences to change it. ?? Thank you in advance.
Only real reason to do so is if you have a 4k tv and want streaming Dolby Vision (which one should if one has a UHD tv). The upscaling is usually just a nicety as your tv would do it.
Otherwise, no, it is essentially the exact same device as they already have out.
The tube is great. I gotta replace my Nexus player in my bedroom..lmaoo
Lol. Yeah you do.
Not only is it great for replacing the Nexus Player, but Nexus Players are a ticking time bomb. Tons and tons of them have started failing randomly.
Does it have Google stadia support
nope no android tv support for stadia at launch. Chromecast, Full Chrome Browser, Chrome OS, or Pixel 3/4 Phones only.
@@greekmanx The nVidia Shileld does have the "Chromecast built-in" feature. Would that count?
@@bobgoat158 unfortunately as I read it they seems to say chromecast only no android TV could be false reporting though so here is to hoping it works
Can you review the new Amazon Fire tv cube plz? thx
Tube doesnt have any usb ports
HI
Is there any way to add a USB port to the tube?
The old shield had Atmos, it didn't have Dolby vision.
That’s what I meant. :)
Any idea if the native Chromecast capabilities will work with the Google Stadia platform?
The Tube has only 32bit Android so 64bit Apps wont work!
Oh no😱
Is this the only version they'll have? What about the version with the gaming controller?
Are there plans for a gaming controller version?
There are two new ones, neither ships with the controller. But you can use ANY controller with it, really.
Can you use ps4 controller?
@@Moderndad okay that's great. I just don't want to worry about getting this pro version and then they release a pro version with the gaming controller.
Great review. You make it fun thumbs up emoji
Is the main launcher UI or Netflix UI (when not playing video) still only 1080p as with 2017 Shields or did they fix it? I didn’t think it would be a big deal until I got used to seeing Netflix UI sharp on Apple TV or even LG’s built in app - Shield’s 1080p was positively ugly then...
Can I force the new Shield Pro to push out 5.1 dolby digital for my Sonos beam?
Modem dad, Chigz, this upscalling service from NVidia shield pró is better from upscalling service 4k tvs and Xbox one x, PS4 pró? our not diferences?
great video, whats the TV behind you
That's a previous-gen TCL 6-Series Roku TV.
You stated the remote has an button to turn the shield off. Does this button also turn the TV off and on?
CEC should take care of that.
No word about how it handles video playback, automatic frame rate and 23.976 fps support ?
Emulators is my bag
Can you install Kodi on either one of these and how and can you also watch local channels like CW Fox stuff like that
Netflix with Atmos ?
Thanks for the review. Is it possible to connect a keyboard and mouse which have a USB dongle to the Pro model? If not I will buy the cheaper one instead
There no place to plug into it. It’s not a dongle. It doesn’t dangle.
Should work. I run a rii remote to my 2017 shield which uses a USB receiver. Prior to that I used a logitech k400 which also used a receiver
yes, i plugged a wireless Logitech kb/mouse and it worked right away.
It's actually not faster than the 2015/17 versions 🤦♂️
I'm getting the pro
Just bought my NVIDIA Shield TV 2019 and i spent half a day trying to connect my ps4 gamepad with no success. i did all things i found around like ... clear cache, data, force stop, reset, factory default ... nothing ... any ideas how to connect the ps4 remote? ... it connects for one sec and then it drops ... appreciate any tip
Taking notes 📝
Is AI Upscaling works when you're playing 720p videos from SD card or ext-HDD? Thanks
Yup
I own a bunch of 2017 Shields. The only upgrade angle I see is for my main tv (which is 4k) if the AI upscaling is a great improvement. I think I would like to understand more about how nice that is compared to what we got in 2015 & 2017 models. I don't mind the $200 price tag as I can either gift or sell an existing Shield I own and recover some of the value. So, is the new AI worth ~$75? I have a lot of 720p-1080p video content that might benefit from a boost.
I dunno that it's something I'd actively pay for. It's nice to have, though. The question is whether the content is supported.
If you have a 4k tv that supports Dolby Vision, that is the primary reason to get this.
Is it possible to access network shares and watch movies? what is the method you use? What subtitle formats does it read?
I don't really do that - but Plex should serve you well. (Get it? It'll SERVE you well. Because Plex. ... I'll see myself out.)
@@Moderndad no I didn't want to use plex I prefer to browse the contents of my network folder as I have the content organized differently ... can I mount a network share? and play the films I have directly on my pc? do the subtitles read them?
can NVIDIA Shield TV 2019 play dolby vision files in plex?
Ask in the Plex forums. That's a Plex issue.
Can it play 4k movies in usb in 4k resolution?. Thanks.
Weird design, but it's just an option, so good to have.
I think the tube is meant to go incognito with the rest of the cables in your living room. ;)
I just hook up my Nvidia shield took it to my friend's house and plugged it in and the power keeps shutting off what do I do
Are you able to do hand free voice control (Ok, Google, Hey, Google) with the new remote?
If you look at the remote buttons on the video you can see it has the same voice control button like the old 2015/2017 remote
Is the remote an air mouse?
