that set looks GREAT! I just picked up a Texas Special F3 A unit from Broadway Limited in N scale, review on my channel of course, shameless plug. I'd really like to find some coaches for it. Although I don't think any have been made for a long time. I think Con-Cor may have made a set back in the day.
You Can Count On Katy! I'm a big Katy fan and life long Texan. I've got a couple of Lionel MKT RTR steam train sets from the 90s and a Lionchief steamer, a Williams Reproductions F3 AB set, Williams Texas Special E7s and passenger cars, a pair of Lionel ALCOs, a pair of Williams ALCOs, Lionel's complete "the Texan" RTR plus add ons, as well as NW2s and GP7s in both red and green MKT liveries, and yet I see another acquisition on the horizon.... at this rate if Lionel WERE the Katy she'd still be a solvent independent class 1 railroad lol.
In the 1960s I had a Lionel train set, and it was very well made, but no place to set one up now. But it's great to watch yours working. Thanks for the show.
Hi Chris, I love the way the train looks. I had a dream a while ago and in my dream you came to my home and I was in one of your videos! I gave you a tour of my layout and you showed it on UA-cam. And when you told your viewers about my speed on the layout, you told them not to criticize me. I was going 100mph with my freight trains. I had a great time with you in my dream. I had another one very similar last year. Cory Mears
I got one of the Lionel Texas Specials about 2 weeks ago. I got the extra two add-on cars as well. Chris, I love this train and saw you got one as well. It is awesome! I am putting it under the Christmas Tree today, 12/9/2023. It is everything I expected it to be. I got it from Gryzboski's Train Store. They are in Pennsylvania and I get my Lionel Orders from them 2 days after I order it. They are the fastest to deliver. Thanks for letting me know about them. John Mo in suburban Philly.
Love The Texas Special. I have a Williams Set ABA with 7 passenger cars and also a K-Line ready to run set as well. Looks like I may be visiting Ken Sr. or Ken Jr. soon to pick up the LionChief set in the near future. Oh I also just ordered the “Katy” car from my friends at METCA. LOL 😂
I love that lionel is putting road specific dialog in their lionchief sets. If a kid gets one as a gift it makes the train more special. Plus the texas special paint is very eye catching.
Lionel’s new 2024 catalogue has an unpowered FT A unit in ‘Texas Special’ livery, perfect to expand your train and mimic the original (whereas the original had E7A units, but still, close enough). I’m sure Lionel will (hopefully) produce a dining car and perhaps even cars that the B&O and the Pennsy contributed to the train. Lionel has certainly added more cars to ‘The Chief’ already, minus a dining car. On a different note, your commissioned boxcar looks fantastic! Would look great behind some KATY or FRISCO power, or even in use in a Halloween Train! Bit of a dumb question, but what is the likelihood of commissioning Lionel, Metca, or a hobby store to produce a special undecorated FT A unit with accompanying remote? Sort of like Lionel’s rare 0-8-0 #99, if you’re ever interested in doing some information on that. Otherwise, Happy Railroading!
I bought 3 Lionel new ready to run sets. A John Deere and 2 Christmas trains. The John Deere engine shakes terribly. 1 Christmas train engine stopped smoking. The other one I haven't run enough to know about it. I also bought a used MTH ready to run John Deere set from Trainz. It has bad distorted sound. So much again for Trainz testing resources. I buy from Trainz but they are unstatisfactory testing the engines. I have bought many engines from Trainz and abiut a third of them had issues.
Thanks for this, Chris. It's a very nicely produced starter set, very bright and colourful. I'm anyone, adult or child, would be pleased to have this for their own.
I have American Models and American Flyer by Lionel passenger car. Just missing the engines. But I have to say to no matter what, both the S and O are awesome. Colors are right on! As for the horn battle, I would have to say a tie.
Thanks for your review. From my first viewing of this train I was not that impressed because I looks really plastic. I don't like my trains to look like plastic!.
Let’s be honest, O Gauge model railroading isn’t for kids these days. It’s crazy expensive, and you can certainly find better options for children at much lower prices. I’d love to get into O Gauge, but at my age, it’s not like I have the money, and I certainly wouldn’t ask for something so expensive for my birthday or christmas. It just isn’t reasonable.
Nice set. It is interesting that they chose to use and FT body shell. The post-war Lionel F3's are fairly close to scale. I couldn't tell if these were based on the regular Lionel F units, as far as size. I passed on a post-war Texas Special set earlier this year to add a Santa Fe set for my AMT passenger cars. I'm trying to find the AMT Texas Special passenger cars, but they are hen's teeth. A great video, as always.
@@katherinemorey6517 That was the first of the EMD F-series locomotives, first built in 1939. They had the four porthole windows, whereas future F's had two or three. There are some other subtle differences, but the portholes are the biggest visual difference.
My one gripe with these sets is that they use an EMD FT but don't include or even offer a B unit. The rest of Lionel's E and F units offer B units separately, but the RTR sets never do. This is particularly annoying because the RTR sets specifically are based on the FT, which was never intended to operate without a B unit, to the point that the real life FTs came from the factory with a B unit semi-permanently attached. As far as I can tell the only F unit Lionel makes as an A unit only is the FT, the only one that absolutely needs a B unit.
Great Work! What ready to run set do you recommend? I am considering starting a O Scale layout (Passenger Trains) with my 7 year old son. Thanks in advance.
Chris, another one of your excellent videos and a pleasure to watch. As an aside, I’ve noticed that among various passenger cars regardless of price point, the interiors frequently lack silhouettes of passengers which would certainly make them even more realistic. It seems strange to manufacture passenger cars without including passengers! It would make a nice touch and surely not a too costly addition in my opinion. What are your thoughts on this matter? Thank you.
I preordered this set along with the two add on cars. I was surprised when this showed up in the volume 1 2023 catalog there wasn’t a lot of you tube hype over it. I absolutely love this set. It is a great value for the money. I also reviewed this set on my you tube channel.
Im wanting to get into O scale but I’ve had two Area 51 lion chief sets now defective. Gear on the Motor striped in 30 min on 1st and 4 or so hour on 2nd set. Not good experience so far with Lionel.
The one thing that bothers me about the newer sets is that they are pretty much only lionchief Since the base lionchief engines can’t be controlled conventionally makes me less inclined to buy any. Any train I get I want the ability to run it with my postwar stuff without needing anything different. So kind of annoys me the base lionchief stuff you have to use the lionchief remote or the app and that is it
The nice thing about Fastrack is that it is readily available if you need to order and find some at a local shop. But I agree, the loop is pretty tiny.
Great review video Chris! I should start getting out my postwar 2245 Texas special F3 set. I really enjoy the yellow nose engines too. The train reviews are multiplying this season. Also That number 90 model sounds too accurate!
Bought a new house with my wife and set up a Christmas village under the tree. All it needs now is a train. My dad had one growing up and I loved it but sadly he lost it somehow. I like the 0 gauge trains I think the most. Any recommendations for a first time train buyer?
Nice review of this set. It was really nice seeing the two versions of the Texas Special sunning side by side. The reds match perfectly. Years back I got the ready to run Ski Train from Lionel. I love that set although even with two motors the engine is woefully under powered. Skip up to two years ago and the Vision Line showed up in the catalog with the F40 engines to match. I had to do it and bought the engine, the four car and two car set. I love this set even more than the RTR version. However, the colors do not match. Its not even close. This is the only complaint I have with these sets.
I only recently starting collecting like this. I remember watching the demos on the old Lionel Web site before UA-cam even existed. I am sure you will be able to get lots of trains eventually!
It looks good for a semi scale set. Never was a fan of semi scale or pre- war size, but that's really good. The scale is what really likened me to Lionel..
Great video as always Chris! I really enjoy your videos. It’s really the perfect starter set. The only thing it needs is a b unit! Keep up the great work. Happy train season
Looks great Chris 🙂🙂 I heard you mention that boxcar will be made in Concord NC & I was like, ah ok, I am not really to far from there, I am in Greensboro NC, which is not really to far from Concord NC, anyway like I said before, great set on that Texas special 🙂🙂
Hey Chris, a question just came to mind but, did Lionel ever make a research car?? I tried to Google it but no results, just wondering if you might know something??

Mini me approves of this video..❤❤😊😊😊
I am relieved!

It kind of like the Santa Fe model because the horns the same the rail road car are just painted in red 😮😮😮😅
Chris not stumping for a Katy, we'll never see the day :D
I need Rapido to make a HO scale Texas Special set. Love the Katy.
I preordered this and I love it, I feel they could include more track but other than that it’s great, I also got the extra baggage car as well.
