  • South Africa is in the midst of a profound crisis. How will the country fare over the next decade and what should individuals, families and communities do to prepare themselves for an increasingly uncertain future?
In this episode of 'Solutions With David Ansara', I speak to my colleague at the Centre For Risk Analysis, Dr Frans Cronje, about the future trajectory of South Africa, and how to develop a strategy to mitigate the downside risks of living in SA.
    Frans and I discuss:
    - What last month's riots reveal about the current state of the country.
    - Why there is no "reform agenda" and why mainstream analysts are so often wrong about SA.
    - The need for developing a 'Plan B' mindset.
    - The importance of diversifying your income and assets.
    - How to secure your children's future.
    - Alternatives to emigration.
    - Whether SA is sustainable as a unitary state and the potential emergence of an "enclave society"

Grow local business and invest offshore, trim local lifestyle ie scale back on everything. Smaller cheaper home, used cars thats cheap to maintain and wont depreciate. Local luxuries - private school.

@@MagnusAzul101 this is excellent advice. Many middle class S.Africans live well beyond their means. Better to focus one's resources on investment (rather than consumption) so if SA declines you can still pivot.

I think the best thing for long term stability in SA is to reduce your reliance on the state. Collect and pressurize rain water for bathing and cleaning. I'm getting ethanol as a byproduct from a cash business of mine, putting my estimated petrol price for my carburetored car at around R12 per litre after mixing.
No man is an island, you cannot be independent in everything. But you can be independent in one thing, and let that one thing also benefit your neighbors. And for the love of God, grow yourself a little bit of food.

Thinking systemically about SA's problems is key. We need to go beyond merely reacting to the next crisis and start to understand the state of the system as a whole.

Directed at Frans. I now live in Canada, so I’ve diversified, got the message in 94 when ESKOM dumped all the white skills and actions during Mbeki rule.
My message to all South Africans that want to stay, you have to uplift the masses from the position of nothing to loose to get buy in to build from virtually scratch the country in which most can make a reasonable life. You will not get the opportunity Frans suggests whereby ANC fails, coalitions ?????? Take over and 20 years later a stable government, even if you did, where are you in life, too old and too poor to rebuild.
NOW is the time to attempt a coalition with ANC, your best choice of a bad situation. The rational politicians need to get in with the ANC and create a working model for the future…NOW or never. Having said that, I assume ANC is willing to realize their incapacity and commit to a shared future with other groups. The financial destruction has already played out, many of the talented people have or are still leaving. Just plot the 2024 point on the downward trend and add a probable further 25% depreciation to the currency, there is no time left to allow further downward trend if you want to stay. Add further exit of business and review Clem Sunter 1992 in MegaWatt park, the low road, its here now.
You can only hope the ANC, Ramaphosa and rational politicians can come together and realize, now is the time to use all the countries intellect and get on a path of recovery NOW. Forget a plan that excludes the party that represents the masses. A federal state may well be the answer but it will take forever and you don’t have time to waste. Best of luck to South Africa.

If balkanisation does happen there would be no guarantee SA's border would stay the same. The north west is an interesting situation historically, ethnically and linguistically it shares alot with Botswana. A huge IF would be Botswana offering the non robust communities state assistance, this in turn could lead to the robust communities aligning themselves with Botswana especially those closer to the border. A far fetched scenario but just some food for thought.

I respect Frans’ commentary, however, some of what he says comes across as oblivious. He states that a “centre-right, conservative” party is in line with the public’s opinion. That is far from the truth, most South Africans favour left wing ideals and parliament’s current seating distribution reflects this. The majority of South Africans are in need of a pragmatic left wing political alternative to the ANC.
To put it into perspective, the DA under Zille and Maimane was essentially centre-left and aligned with the mean South African voter, yet it’s perception of being a centre-right party that serves white interests under the Tony Leon years did not attract a sufficient number of black voters to the party - and winning a large share of the black vote is the only way you have a reasonable chance of forming a government.
I personally believe a new centre-left party in the vein of COPE & the increasingly centre-right DA (and potentially parties such as the IFP & ACDP) forming a moderate coalition is the best solution to South Africa’s crises. But I will give you the benefit of the doubt, Herman Mashaba’s ActionSA party might be an interesting prospect that serves your viewpoint.

How do they all come together and protect themselves from even bigger players and threats?
