Yes, in humble opinion Nightwish is Tuomas. All the magic starts from him, he's inspires every single person in the band by giving them his beautiful songs. So yes, he's the main source of magic.

Indeed, this is a truth that is not obvious at first glance: the true magic of Nightwish lies in the genius of Tuomas Holopainen. And with that in mind, it's only natural that he has gathered around him over time an extraordinarily talented group of people, such as Emppu, Jukka, Troy, Kay, Marco, Tarja, Anette and Floor. Through the genius of his compositions, he enables others to assert themselves through their interpretation.
Viewed from this perspective, the so-called "rivalries" lose their importance. There remain the crowds whose outlook on life is changing for the better. The irony is that I don't think Tuomas intended this, but just to express his inner self.

Oh, I forgot the suggestions: "The Siren", "Walking In The Air", "Swanheart" and "Planet Hell" are imo highlights of Tarja's career in Nightwish. All these are truly breathtaking. And I'm not even her biggest fan..

I like them both of course. They both are so great. I love Floors work in this band now with the new music. But i have actually returned to like Tarjas versions of her era more. I love how she hit those high notes with such an ease and that emotions she brings to the songs when she sings.
According to Tuomas, the song is the “mother of all Nightwish songs,” about himself and how he wants people to remember him when he passes away. He said " This is the most personal song I’ve ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise to everyone who deserves my apology. If you count Tarja, Anette and then Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) and Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy) for that odd but magical night in Denver 2012, Floor is actually their 5th singer (6 if you count Marko and 7 if you count Troy!) Tarja song: "Walking In the Air" (any version), Anette song "Slow, Love, Slow" (Montreaux 2012 live).... I don't think are any full songs with Elize and Alissa recorded - snippets n the documentary "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" and "The Denver Debacle" (should be "The Denver Miracle!"). This rabbit hole is DEEP!
Psst... don't forget to include Tuomas as one of the singers! He's admittedly not the best voice out there, but I do like how he sounds on the studio version of The Carpenter.

@@damienmaynard8892 I think so? I don't have the full Nightwish catalog on CD yet although I'm working on picking up what I'm missing. But I think the Decades set used remastered versions of the originals on one disk along with the live-recorded versions from the Buenos Aires show on the other.
This was yet another great performance by Tuomas. I don't care who sings it, ofcourse they are both capable.But the thing is, Tuomas is the maker and creator, without him there is no Nightwish.I love that piano in this.The thing is it seems Tuomas likes to be in the side, not caring for the spotlight, yet it really is him who carries the band, not alone ofcourse but still.Singers get praised but it's really his mind where the magic happens.This song is yet another example of it. And about singers: What I would give to see Tarja and Floor together performing with Nightwish....👀 I will never compare or choose sides because I don't have to.My only regret is that I found this band so late.But better late than never.

We got to spread the word, wake up some of these people that never heard of Nightwish, this band past to present, pure magic. Tuomas is Nightwish, without him, no Nightwish ever.

Nightwish has been a famous band in Europe and Latin America since the late 90s and early 2000s. You can see how big the group was at Tarja's time by noticing the size of the audience on the "End of an era" DVD. It turns out that it was a time without UA-cam and with more limited social media, which may be an explanation of why the band is not so well known in the USA. With an internet still growing, the promotion was more dependent on conventional media, which do not usually pay much attention to metal. It is difficult to choose a favorite song from the Tarja era. There are many songs. Of the band's 9 studio albums, 5 were recorded with her. If I had to choose, maybe it would be "Ghost love score" and "Beauty of the beast". The original version of Ghost love score has more choirs and more orchestra than the version of Wacken that you saw, however, it does not have that high note that Floor sings at the end. This vocal excerpt was added years after Tarja left. Floor's version is wonderful, but I still prefer Tarja's version. For me, the harmony between the orchestra, the choir, the backing vocals and Tarja's voice matches better with the lyrics. About "Beauty of the beast", there is a live version, but the quality is not good, even in the remastered videos I saw. Therefore, I strongly recommend the studio version so as not to ruin your experience. Beauty of the beast is a song from the album Century Child, the fourth of the group. It's a song as iconic as Ghost love score and Tarja's version is the only one to date. Many new fans don't know this song because they only hear the versions of Nightwish with Floor. It is important not to confuse "Beauty OF the beast" with "Beauty AND the beast". The band has these two songs, but the one that I am indicating as one of my favorites is "Beauty OF the beast". Despite that, I also like "Beauty AND the beast". If you want to hear it, there is a live version recorded on the From wishes to eternity dvd.

Diana Ankudinova is unique and inimitable, goosebumps from her voice!=)))) Diana sings as if she lives in the song! My favorite part of this song is the poem itself. I came across nightwish when wishmaster came out and heard this song thousands of times. Big hard man like me was in tears reading that stuff. Its some of the strongest things ive ever seen written on paper.

Floor is the more engaging, charismatic performer, but Tarja's use of her dark low register, then the 'flip' into the soft, controlled, pure head voice in the last minute, absolutely tugs at the heartstrings and just feels so right in this song. Her enigmatic stage presence also suits the more intimate setting of the smaller stage. That being said, Floor's soothing, melancholy voice suits the song very well also.
Tuomas is the magic behind Nightwish. But I simplify the singer's magic as this; Floor is charismatic, Tarja is enigmatic. For more Tarja songs I'd recommend; The Pharoah Sails to Orion, Nemo, End of all Hope, Dead to The World, Sleeping Sun (the single, or Live at Raumanmeri version; End of An Era's is ok, but this sounds better), Ghost Love Score (End of An Era), Beauty And the Beast, Gethsemene, Stargazers, Slaying the Dreamer, Kinslayer, and Wishmaster.

In this particular song, I feel the exact opposite. Don't get me wrong, I love Floor and all NW phases, but this song sounds so much better with Tarja for my ears.
I still prefer Tarja in couple of their songs, but Floor brought to Nightwish that new dimension, huge amount of emotions. They were always awesome band, but nowadays they are God like.

I agree with you, I adore each Nightwish vocalist for their time and what they brought to the band and how they expressed vocally what Tuomas was trying to convey with his compositions... some of my favorite songs sung by Tarja are Kinslayer, Sleeping Sun, Gethsemane, Nemo, and Stargazers to name just a few
Newer fan of NW, but I have to say some of my favorite Tarja tracks are Wishmaster from End of an Era and the music video of Over the Hills and Far Away.

Thanks for reacting to this song. It's one of my favourites. Actually the first video was the one that pushed me to try and play Nightwish on drums. I was so proud when I played it correctly 20 years ago. So about Floors version... In my opinion is much better, but not because of the vocals. Tarja and Floor are both amazing. And no it's not about modern sound effects and mixing. It's about the new orchestration that Tuomas arranged. He even added Scandinavian bouzouki in it. I could never imagine that an amazing song like this could get any better. Even drums are more interesting with the break their playing along with the other instruments, during "a lonely soul" at the end. And as Richard Dawkins said about nature, same goes for Tuomas. He is being EVOLVED 🤘

This is one of my favorite songs from Nightwish. The magic is in the composer. However having an amazing singer such as Tarja and Floor takes in to another level and puts the finishing touches on these wonderful compositions. Regarding Tarja songs, my suggestions would be "The Siren", "Wishmaster", or "Walking in the Air".
This is a very emotional and personal song for Tuomas. The small child's voice represents Tuomas inner child speaking. When asked what this song was about "Tuomas has said about this song, that it's about if he were to die tomorrow, what would he want to say to everyone that he loves, and that love him..."
Notice the small boy on the screen reaching out to the flying swans on the screen. The swan is the guide to the afterlife in Finnish mythology. He is reaching out to implore them to take him with to the other side. A beautiful song filled with sadness from an unfulfilled destiny.

Floor is miles apart from any other vocalist Nightwish have had , she brings more passion performance and of course outstanding range of vocals than any of the other past Nightwish vocalists
Plenty of songs I prefer Floor in, especially Ghost Love Score, but Tarja is best for this one, IMHO. Her voice just works better; very emotional. I agree, Tuomas is the key to Nightwish's brilliance. Of course, you need a great vocalist to do it properly too, and Tarja and Floor are both awesome!
So, as much as i love floor - there is one song that belongs to Tarja.

The complete line-up of Nightwish from the clip with Tarja is the soul of Nightwish, without which Tuomas would not be so big. Each of them, here, left their whole self on the stage. A unique and unrepeatable time of the birth of Nightwish, but also of a special musical style (symphonic metal).
I love that time and it's hard to describe that energy to someone who hasn't experiensed it.
Nightwish with Floor is a completely different group and only The Poet and The Pendulum Floor singing unreal, memorable.

All 3 female Nightwish singers were and are great singers. But it is not a secret that both Tarja and Anette have become better singers in their solo careers afterwards.
On the other hand, Floor was phenomenal in After Forever and ReVamp - and she has evolved Nightwish into a state and position, that none of the 2 others were able to.
But that been said - it must never turn into a competition between these 3 super front women, while they are not comparable, because they have different styles in singing and stage performance. Nightwish have evolved through 3 æras / periods with 3 different styles.
When Floor arrived, Tuomas and the others very quickly began to change songs and approach, to meet Floor's more "metal - power" style stage- and singing style. And they have had to cope with Floor's versatility and ability to express passion and emotions, like none of the others had. It is very easy to see how the all changed their stage appearance to match Floor's - who are very dominant on stage, if she wants it to be (it is her job as front!). They are now much more free and smiling and having fun - also together with the audience - Floor has always been in direct contact with the crowd and a specialist in crowd control, because of her personality on stage.

If you listen to Anette's new album, it is brilliant, and she is a really strong studio musician - and I am pretty sure that she will perform phenomenal on stage too, with these songs, because they fit her voice so perfectly - and her attitude on stage. Her band is The Dark Element.

Both are amazing singers and, voice and technique aside, people tend to neglect the singer but the way you interpret an original song makes a huge different and the way Tarja interpreted his songs was something else. Songs from her era are still the best to this day. Wait, what? Empu on a white ESP? All jokes aside, you hit the nail on the head my man: you can argue about Tarja vs Floor, or this singer vs that singer, or even this musician vs that musician. What you can NOT argue about is the brilliance of the composition and lyrics. On every song not only this one, but this one in particular...

One of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard was written by Mozart.....Lacrimosa....In modern times some of the most beautiful and epic pieces of music ever written have been my our own Metal Mozart...aka Tuomas. Ultimately it is the feelings of the composer (in both instances) who communicates through music versus speaking. Peace out.
Tarja is fantastic and the track is my favourite. But, Buenos Aires, that crowd, NIghtwish, Floor, that outfit, that track and that performance are the dogs bollocks as we say. Perfection in my opinion.
Spot on about the composer, Tuomas. There is not one song that makes me emotionally react to, definitely something rare.
Floor brings so much magic to the band. She even dances, and what a beautiful silhouette she makes in this video. Great reaction. Keep on Nightwishing on. 🤘😜🤘
I saw Tarja live with Nightwish in Germany as a teen in the early 2000s. She actually danced around a lot and really had fun with the audience. She'd even bang at times (somewhat clumsy but she had fun.. so whatever). And she could drag you down to veeery dark places only with her voice. I've never seen so many teary cheeks at a metal concert.
And I saw Nightwish with Floor in 2015. Oh my, she was awesome, too. She feels the songs, she truly does.
I have to admit that I like Tarja's smooth dark timbre better in the old songs, though. However, Tarja probably couldn't sing the newer songs the way Floor does.
I can't believe how lucky NW was to have them both as their lead vocalists.

Tuomas compositions and Tarjas voice, that was in the end where the magic began. I don't know another band that mixed rock/metal with an operatic voice before, Renaissance with Annie Haslam was maybe the closest, and they more or less laid the foundation for a lot band that followed later.
Floor does the song great justice, but without Tarja she would have never even had the chance to do that.
Nightwish also was first more like a folk oriented band, and then after Tarja came back from her classical training Tuomas realized that her voice now was just to strong for that music and decided to do something different.

He was obviously talking about Annette, since she was the singer that Floor replaced. I love how Floor fans like to take a quote and try and fit into their narrative. Smh

This American was fortunate enough to find Nightwish back in 1999. As far as one of my favorite Tarja songs it would have to be Sleeping sun from End of an Era dvd. It starts with the composer, for sure and Tuomas is worldwide the best one, but saying it doesn't matter who sings it? Oké, i think if that is the case , even tuomas wouldn't be where he is now, it is a good thing that we all have our own opinion.
I love both...but Floor's is the one that brings on the onion ninja's. She lives every song she sings and the emotion radiates from her in waves, it's kinda crazy.

Excellent comments. Both versions are amazing but for some reason, for me anyway, Floor's performance is just more emotional, majestic and magical. BTW - her name is pronounced "Tarya" just as Floor's last name is pronounced "Yansen". The "J" in is pronounced as a "Y" in many European countries. :-)

From what I looked at in your playlist, you only reacted to 1 song from the Floor era (The greatest show on earth). All the other songs are from the Anette era or from the Tarja era. It turns out that you did not hear the original versions, but only the Floor version. Ghost love score, Dark chest of wonders, Ever dream and Romanticide are from the era of Tarja. You can find live versions of these songs on the "End of an era" dvd, except for Romanticide (I don't know Tarja's live version for this song). Song of myself, Storytime, Ghost river, The islander and The poet and the pendulum are songs from the Anette era. Generally for Anette it is better to listen to the studio versions.
