My child added a password to his tablet and forgot it the next day and I couldn't get it to restart/go to the menu to factory reset. So, thank you a billion times over! I now no longer have an expensive paper weight!

Thank you so much! By the way when you restart in recovery mode u don't need to press the power button again. As u said only home button and volume up is suffisant it's easier to manipulate. :)

Your steps worked for me. Thank you. In your example however, when you rebooted, you would have been asked for the password (you can't remember) when you picked reboot. Mine was asking me for my password too. Instead of reboot, I scrolled down to wipe data and run factory reset. Once I did this, the password was eliminated. I chose PIN as my security tool this time.
