I really love the “hate to love” trope, it’s not really specific to YA because you can find it anywhere.
Forbidden romance is my weakness... as long as the obstacle keeping the LIs apart makes a decent amount of sense
Omg the trope i'm addicted to is the love story that starts out with two people who don't get along at first... basically anything that gives me Pride and Prejudice vibes, lol. Sometimes it's so-so, but more often than not, I eat those stories UP!
I love that one. Especially when the boy character is like the one with the one who has a lot of jokes that irritate the main character.
Yeah when the guy isnt abusive and dark or bad boy😄just dont get along to gether is great
Oh I love books set in boarding schools, summer camps to I can't explain it but the instant you set something in a boarding school or a summer camp especially a magical boarding school for summer camp a la Camp Half-Blood or Hogwarts it more interesting to me.

Read The Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce (first book is called Alanna) She takes the place of her twin brother to become a Knight in a Medieval fantasy setting
I honestly don’t know why so many people dislike the “chosen one” trope. I agree with you, it’s a trope I really enjoy if it’s done right. 😊
For me it's because I would rather see the character pursue the goal, whatever it is, with their own motivation and through a great effort. Basically, if the character is prophecised to save the world it feels like they have already done it in the future. If they are supposed to have the weight of the world on their shoulders why not have them become the leader of a global world-saving group? Or maybe not even the leader, just a pawn with a most crucial task?
Carbon2861996 you definitely have a point and I can see from both sides of the spectrum, I have come to realise that motivations are a key part of character development so I do agree with your statement. But I do enjoy the trope in some cases.
Of course, I'm not saying that it can't be done well, though it's much harder to do it right or somehow originally.
I love the "chosen one" trope but I really want to see a book from the perspective of a friend of a "chosen one"
I personally love the “forbidden love” trope. IF DONE RIGHT lol. Also I really enjoy the “evil redemption” trope. Like the antagonist or anti-hero turns the other cheek and decides to help the protagonist save the world. Or the person we thought was really evil turns out to be misunderstood.
I love the 'lost royalty' trope, even though its so overused and they've beaten it into our heads a billion times. I think the barbie movies I watched when I was kid was to blame for why I love this trope so much.
i love the love triangle. if you hate one love interest, you have another one to root for!
Whenever there is a character that likes to read/is nerdy ends up with the popular person who secretly likes to read/is also nerdy...I don't know why but I always love that

I love a positive view of YA tropes! As an aspiring author, it's sometimes disheartening when people are so negative about tropes, since it's hard to avoid all of them when writing genre fiction. Your list has a lot in common with my current work in progress, which makes me very happy, haha! Hopefully, if and when it's ever published, you'll pick it up and enjoy it!!!

I love training sequences where you get to see the work that characters put in to train in their skills/magic/fighting/academia UGH SO SATISFYING AND MOTIVATING
one trope that i adore is that drop where the vilain explains the revenge he had planned , i love it so much

I'm a huge sucker for the romance subplot between the main guy and girl in any adventure book or movie. It's cliche I know, but I always love it! (This was especially well done in Percy Jackson)
100% agree with all five. But especially the boarding school setting, the chosen one trope and the secret destiny trope. LOVE BEYOND WORDS
I am also obsessed with the boarding school trope. I also actively seek out books with that kind of setting (movies too - I love St Trinians and Wild Child). And, same as you, that possibly stemmed from my love of Harry Potter. I definitely agree with the idea that part of the allure is that the kids have more freedom without their parents hovering over them. But I think it's also partly that I went to lots of camps when I was younger, and the idea of a boarding school just seemed like an extended camp - just without the flying foxes and a lot more school work lol. Also the idea of living with lots of people your own age, possibly sharing a room with your friends, so you get to hang out all the time... There's so much that appeals to me about that trope. It's also a fantastic setting for weird/magical/mysterious/creepy things to happen, and that's usually what does happen in these books, and it's the sort of thing I love.
On the theme of the boarding school trope, I recommend "Down a Dark Hall" by Lois Duncan. It was written several decades ago, but she did update it recently to accommodate modern technology. It's very creepy - all of Lois Duncan's books are.

When I saw this I was thinking of my fav YA tropes and the first thing that came to my mind was the boarding school trope, and then you said it
I love a magical boarding school setting or a rainy misty foresty by the lake town setting.
I also LOVE the 'complicated romance' cliche. Another of my favourites is the 'main protagonist goes bad to save the people they love and then the people who love them have to try and bring them back', as well as the 'protagonist makes a bad decision that proves they aren't perfect and are human too'. If these are done well, then I'm basically trash for the book
Complicated romance: The Last Magician. The angst level basically drove me insane.
Favorite trope: Hate turned romance. Gets me almost every time.

Ooooh yes I absolutely LOVE the disguised character trope, it makes for so much tension!
Ugh, I am such trash for boarding school cliches lol. Agree 100% on all your points. As for the chosen one trope, I kind of have a love/hate relationship with it. I feel oftentimes authors use this as an excuse to make their characters immediately great at everything. If done correctly (which is rare in my opinion) the book/series usually becomes one of my all time favorites.
I love the thing especially in fantasy when there is a list of different character descriptions who all come together and form sort of a found family and we follow all of their perspectives (ex: Six of Crows) I just love characters and I get really excited about books that have those one line descriptions of several characters that we will follow!
Given your love for the boarding school trope, you should look into the "Knightley Academy" duo by Violet Haberdasher. It is more of a middle-grade book about an academy for knights and it is awesome! You would love it, I would highly recommend checking it out, as I have yet to see it discussed on booktube!
I LOVE secret powers trope but its gotten overused that it’s not done right very often but when it is it’s 👌🏻
The Mortal Instruments didn't push Clary into being a master Shadowhunter.And I love that she didn't put Jace above her family and friends.
I will love book cliches until the day I die. I’m trash for them, lmao. My FAV has to be when the character is “the chosen one.” 🤣
Have you ever hear of the gallagher girls series? I think it's right up your alley. It has none of the hated tropes and it's about a boarding school for gifted girls to learn how to be spies. Espionage, a clueless boyfriend whose not an asshole, there's a slight love triangle but that lasts for less than a fraction of a book and she's already made her decision by the time it rears its ugly head,
All of the main characters come from different backgrounds, there's a strong family aspect explored in many ways, there's a bit of a chosen one feel but more as them choosing to act on what they've learned. Did I mention POC characters? Because everyone's unique. There's a bit of "invisible girl" syndrome with the main character but instead of hating it, she embraces it because it makes her a better operative. It's an amazing series that gets better and better as they go. Short and written kinda foolishly at times but its language matures with the C characters so it works out.
I love so many of these tropes, especially the chosen one! No matter how many times it's used I will still read it! And regarding the complicated romance I always enjoy the hate to love relationships! I live for those!
When you talked about Cassandra Clare it made me realise that she literally uses that for every couple haha. Turns out I also love that trope.

Based on this video I have to recommend "The Burning Sky" from the elemental trilogy by Sherry Thomas. It has the chosen one, and the girl has to dress as a guy AND the boarding school "cliches". It also has a bit of a middle grade feel which I know you can appreciate. This series is right up there with my favourites and I think deserves way more love!

I love the prophecy trope. I love books with vague fortold fortunes, that don't make sense until the very end of the book. Or the metaphor or motif that runs through the whole book.
And the the metaphor and prophecy comes true in an obvious or strange way.

The only book I have ever read that has a good love triangle is The Host by Stephanie Meyer, but that triangle makes my heart sing.

I agree with you on the romance. I find that romance is my guilty pleasure BUT! It has to be done right. Like you mentioned, when it's a slow burn, something complex and complicated it's awesome. But on the other hand, I HATE insta-love. Or, I also don't like when I buy like, a mystery book or fantasy book where the plot is something really awesome but it gets drowned out by the romantic drama.

i agree with all of these except for the "chosen one" trope. in my opinion it's overdone and i personally find it more empowering to have a character who has the determination and courage to step up for a task on their own. great list, though!

I’m writing a book that is literally all about disguise. I’m only on chapter three but I have a detailed plan for the plot and conflicts. I don’t have a title yet or a name for either of the two main characters though. It’s about this girl who goes undercover to help solve mysteries for the government. She does this by switching her entire identity around to fit the personality of the suspect/suspects and then spend 1-10 months getting to personally know them or trying to get them to want to be romantically involved so they will be more open or she will have an excuse to search their house without them suspecting anything. She reports back to their “company” *wink wink nudge nudge* every week or so and when they have sufficient evidences she moves on to the next case. On one of her cases she really falls in love with a guy, all be it not the one she was supposed to for that case, and makes some bad decisions, has an identity crisis, and just ends up falling more and more for her oblivious roommate as he helps her through this case without knowing.

You should watch the Sungkyunkwan Scandal! It's a subtitled Korean drama on Hulu that follows this girl who needs to dress as a boy to make money to care for her sick brother and she ends up going to an all male boarding school. It takes place in historical Korea so it's beautiful and hilarious and it has the complicated romance you want.
And Yoochun is an amazing actor

You should read the Variant duology by Robison Wells. It's set in a boarding school (really only the 1st one) and it's kind of a mysterious dystopian with a big shocking sci-fi twist. It's really good!
