I use a broken old reel to load the spool line onto first, then transfer the line onto the final target reel but set the drag of the old reel. The new reel then pulls the line hard off the reel and you get a far more compact line lay. Also you can also use water on the braid to help get a compact line lay.
Not necessarily, the original way Braid was put onto spools when it first came out was with electrical tape. Then people started using mono backing to save money because they realized braid is expensive and that they didn't need a full spool anyway.
This is NOT how you want to wind braid. Please don't follow this guy's instructions. You don't need tape if its done right. The key is to leave a tag end about an inch long of braid and to SLOWLY wind over that tag end at HIGH PRESSURE when you start. He is way too loose and it would cause nothing but problems later when the spool slips. Salt water will get under the tape and corrode the spool. I even put in a light coat of corrosion protectant on the spool to protect it.
