When I was young I always had my grandfather and dad take me fishing but never told me how to set up a spool and after watching this video I've set up already 4 spools and I've taught both my sons a 10 year old and a 7 year old so thanks mate this is the best video ever . PS the electric take is such a great secret to keep that braided line in place and not slip !
Wrapping around the spool atleast (at a minimum 4 to 5 times) before pulling knot tight is the key for it not to slip! I benefited from this video! best braid to spool knot video by far
Awesome mate, I'm so glad. Yes, the multiple wraps around the spool are key to getting the purchase required for running decent drag with braid straight to the spool 👌
Every reel I get now has spools designed to take braid. They put marks and different things so the braid won’t slip. I used to back up my reels with some mono but now I don’t do that anymore
Great video! Short, sweet, to the point. No fluff and BS. Great knot to boot! Thanks much for the tutorial! My dad, father in law, and I all benefitted from it!
Awesome mate, I'm so glad. Exactly what I hoped to achieve when I filmed these videos, to help people be confident in their knots and enjoy their fishing 👌🎣🐟
I haven't seen anyone load the line that way but that was about as straight forward as it gets. Glad I check your video and I will give that a whirl right now. Seeing that knot lock down on the reel and not spin sold me.
Thanks for the video. I was going to line a very shallow spool that only holds 100 yards of braided and didn’t want to lose any of that capacity to backing!
This is the ONLY knot out of ALL the others that would stay tied on my reel!!! I am using Berkley Solutions Braid 10lb. test with 2lb. diameter. I have a Lew’s Xfinity reel with the knurled spool for braided line and ALL the knots I tried would slip and come loose!!! Don’t know what it is about all these knots including this one but it’s the only one I got to work!!! Thanks a million as I was about to pull my hair out of my head!!!
Great video and demonstration!! Short & Sweet....Easy to follow. Worked brilliantly the first time. Thanks for making my first effort to spool my own line a big success!
Mate i've struggled so much with different knots and non of them stick tightly on like this one. Was always nervous to put line on spool properly without anything messing up! thanks man foreal
@@Deanobravio lol! I've been fishing for half of my 26 years, but I took a 1-2 year break from it due to being an OTR trucker so I'm rusty. Long story short, I snagged enough on the bottom, damaged it on wood in the water and had to re tie far down the line , and switched lures so much that it ate up line quickly. Not your fault, I think I have a slightly smaller reel as well which doesn't help. I spooled a week or so ago and Im redoing it today
Also, you sound like the people from AUS Shark Tank. Compliment. Professional and friendly. They're a lot better than the American version on that note, but America is America right? L
Awesome! Thanks for this. Every other video I've come across demonstrated spooling braid with a mono backer. My braid will fill my reel though, so I didn't want to go buy mono just to stop slipping.
Great video. I spooled my reel earlier today before watching this. I used a uniknot but your method of tying the knot first then attaching it to the reel is much easier.
Well I’m waaayyy to high 🍄 for this right now Idk what I was thinking “ gona drink a few of these beers eat these mushrooms then spool my reel 👍 “ Yeahhhhh no By the way !! Great video brotha , I actually have this video saved and use it ever time I’m putting new braid on . And yes I’ve never had one issue with this not once
I do the same thing except i don’t loop it around the reel more than once or twice, and then I tie the uni with just 3 over lanes instead of 6, so the knit isn’t so big. Been doing it like this for 20 years never had a problem. I sometimes don’t even use the tape. Just make sure it’s tight and you’ll probably be fine
If you use liquid tape instead it never needs replacing (unless you physically peel it off),doesn't get hot and gooey, and uses less space on the reel. You do want to remove every bit of it on the lips of the spool so your line doesn't catch and mess up the cast. Baitcasters and conventional reels are much simpler to do. I use it on every one of my reels.
Hi mate, I stick the tag down with a bit of sticky tape, turn the handle so it wraps the line around the spool 3 times then pick it off and tie my uni knot. I'll do a video for you, keep an eye out 👍
I just got a Pflueger President reel I'll use on my Ugly Stik remake rod. Will that reel take braid (Spider Wire) without backer line? Both reel and line are in hand, but in separate piles.
@TexasBorn-bp8mo twisting when spooling? So many variables, but perhaps check how the line is coming off the spool and also make sure the roller bearing in your bail arm is spinning free 👍
In this case, no you don't. But if you don't have enough braid to fill the reel then yes you could use mono to back the braid. If that's the case you won't need the electrical tape for the mono 👍
Hi John, I mostly use Unitika or Majorcraft Dangan braid. Both very high quality. As you will see, there are many different types of braids. And for the leader, yes usually using flurocarbon material for anything #6-#60, after that i usually use Mono shock leader 👍
My understanding is it will just be overkill, but it'll work just fine. But with mono you can just tie a simple overhand knot around the reel and be fine because mono line grips the reel so much better.
If my reel came with a rubber grip that goes around the sender of the spool but it doesn’t cover the whole front of the spool do you think I could do it without electrical tape?
Perfect video, short, sweet and to the point without telling us about your third grade teacher. More people should follow your lead!!!
Exactly!!!
I wana hear about third grade teacher …

I spent an hour trying to tie a knot from different videos... first try and I get an amazing knot here! Thanks so much!
Super simple, easy to follow, no BS. Love this video.
Awesome mate, that was the exact idea behind filming these knot videos. Clear, easy, no BS 👌🎣🐟 Tight lines
I like the idea of wrapping electrical tape around the spool two times . Good job .
wrapping with bandage tape really helps prevent slips?
I haven't seen anyone load the line that way but that was about as straight forward as it gets. Glad I check your video and I will give that a whirl right now. Seeing that knot lock down on the reel and not spin sold me.
Works very well, every reel I own is spooled that way, plus 1000s of customers. Never once had an issue 👌 tight lines

thank you, the other videos failed but yours was the right solution for braided lines not slipping.
do u also put tape on it?
Thanks for the awesome how to video 👍🏻 Worked perfectly with tying the braid on my reel. Greetings from Norway 🇳🇴
Thanks for sharing a very easy and simple yet strong knot! Brilliant! Tight lines 🎣
Perfect! Short and close-up video with just enough wording to convey the lesson.
Nailed it. This is perfect!! I’ve just done 2 reels. Just hope I’ve got the tension right.
Best method ever! Still use it to the day. Thanks man!

I just did an arbor knot with the piece of tape that came with the spool as an anchor, i hope that holds
Gonna spool my new Kast King reel this way with 15lb braid
Great video I like it. what do you do on a conventional reel where you can't just slip the loop over the spool?

Thanks brother it's really good knot.Helpful me n hope to others too.🎣👍
i just make a small loop and catch it on the line holder clip an side of spool. so easy and doesn’t slip.

I tried something similar to this how do y'all keep the line from twisting
@TexasBorn-bp8mo twisting when spooling? So many variables, but perhaps check how the line is coming off the spool and also make sure the roller bearing in your bail arm is spinning free 👍
had to watch 3 or 4 times, keep looking out the window for my dog.
🤣🤣🤣👍

Do need mono backing at all? First time putting braid onto a reel.
In this case, no you don't. But if you don't have enough braid to fill the reel then yes you could use mono to back the braid. If that's the case you won't need the electrical tape for the mono 👍
@@Deanobravio Thanks mate
How do you spool without the rod? I usually spool the line with the rod connected aswell
Perfect mate!
dude this is the only way to do it.👍👍👍👍👍
Agreed 👍 🤙
Thank you worked perfectly
What is the electrical tape do for the line when you say it cushions?
Is that a braid ready reel?
@Mr4twitch not exactly sure what you mean by "braid ready" but this Shimano Stella is certainly designed to fish braid 👍
@Deanobravio if it's not braid ready, it needs a backing, or it will slip.

A lot of Penn reels come with that. Yes just make 3 wraps around the spool and then tie your chosen knot and pull it down tight into the rubber ring 👍
If You have rubber You should be safe
