Everyday: doing the bed, emptying the dishwasher that I started the night before, taking out recycle/trash, vacuuming, wiping dinner table and kitchen counters. These only take 20 minutes total and they have such a BIG impact. Everything else I do weekly or just wipe as needed, also there's a "tidying up after you used it" policy at my home so it never really gets messy.

I definitely prefer to tidy than actually clean! So long as the place looks nice and neat (currently living with roommates) then I am happy.
When Melissa mentioned strengthening the latter (cleaning for me), I shook my head no haha, but I'm working on it because I do not like cleaning after my roommates, but a clean space is important for me :)

Kitchen is the FIRST thing - before bed. It really helps to wake up to a fresh clean kitchen starting the day. I start laundry so it can be running simultaneously to whatever else I’m doing. We have so many projects going on now but if those two things are managed first - I can get through the morning... or at least until lunch!

Agreed! I like to make sure the kitchen and/or tidy all day. For me, it’s better to clean as I go. I use a dish, I rinse the dish and put it in the dishwasher. I clean and wipe down as I cook. I go through the kitchen, I rinse whatever dishes I find in the sink that the kids or the spouse left in the sink pressed for time

I have been waging a personal war on clutter in the past year. Less clutter makes it easier to clean. I have also delegated certain tasks to my teen sons. They do their own laundry and clean their bathroom every week. One takes out the trash, the other burns paper (we live in the country). Daily I do dishes, one load of laundry (mine and my husbands, towels, sheets, etc), vacuum (we have a German Shepard) and tidy up. It works for us 🙂

My daily tasks are dishes, kitchen, a load of laundry, making my bed and tidying my room (our special needs daughter has her own bed in our room). I vacuum the whole house once a week and sweep as needed. Bathrooms once a week. Postpartum depression was extremely difficult for me trying to maintain our home, so for the last few months I’ve been really decluttering. If we haven’t seen/used it in 6 months we don’t need it, with a few exceptions. I take on one “project” a day, like our closet, or vacuuming and organizing our dresser drawers. It’s finally where I want it! It’s still a pain to maintain with 3 kids, but it’s manageable.

When I have the energy the laundry gets done daily and my kitchen stays fairly tidy. But I struggle with chronic fatigue and sometimes I have a really bad week, or even month, when I just can't keep up with anything. It's as miserable cycle because as soon as I start to feel like I have more energy I start trying to catch up and then I over do it and trigger another round of fatigue.

I'm quite good with the tidying, probably because it is more obvious more quickly. So the living room has to look just right before I go to bed. I hate cleaning, especially floors. Probably because I have back problems. I try to "dry mop" the floors daily, but washing them is the one task I heavily procrastinate on. Also the skirting boards are a big challenge because they were installed with silicone in the gap to the wall and dirt just sticks to them. So it's a job that requires getting on my knees which is quite painful for me.

Cleaning is so much harder for me lately so I can't wait until I'm back to being high functioning enough to consistently meet my old baseline.

I used to throw the clothes I was wearing that day on top of a chair or hamper in the bedroom because they weren't necessarily dirty. The clothes would pile up by the end of the week and I would dread hanging them back up because it would take so long. So I tried the method of putting them away right away. My method is in the morning when I get dressed I leave the hangers out that I took the clothes off of that way I'm not searching for a hanger when I get home, and when I do get home I change into comfy clothes so if the clothes I was wearing out are not dirty the hanger is right there and I just hang them back up. It takes less than 30 seconds whereas a pile of clothes to hang up is much longer. If they are dirty I just throw them in the hamper. By the end of the week I still have a mess free area, clothes are put away, and dirty laundry is ready to load.

I am surprised I already do all these things. I was so bad at cleaning and organizing my home years before, but now I always have a clean and tidy home. It all started with a clean sink every night. Than decluttering regularly. Then, everything have a designated place so I know where is every object in my home. Then, a clean kitchen. Laundry every day. Hanghing all my clothes on hangers (This way every time I put something back it has it's place and it keeps a good shape). Every time I use something I put it on back where it belongs. A weekly routine...etc.. it's not perfect all the time, but it's just so much easier now to have a clean and organized home than it was years before.

I care more about tidiness. A space can be super clean but if it's messy it causes me stress. Once the space is all tidied up, though, I start to notice the areas that need to be cleaned and then that causes me stress. 😂 In summary, most of the time, I'm stressed. 🤣 LOVED your approach on the topic, btw. Realistic, effective, motivating. The only daily cleaning "checklist" that will stand the test of time. 👍👍👍

    • @shannonm2005

If you have a dishwasher, the best tip I can give is obviously load dishes directly in there. I have always struggled with dishes (raised by very lazy people). However I moved in with my boyfriend whose very clean and he taught me to load the dishwasher, run at night before bed and wash any big things by hand (pans & knives) takes 5 mins and there’s usually about 3-4 things from dinner. Next morning unload before you make breakfast, also takes about 5 mins and then start the process over. Then you have a fresh dishwasher to load your dishes in for the day and the start of some good dishes habits that are easy to stay on top of. We do it as a team a lot of times so it’s even faster. It’s changed my life, best of luck.

Great video! I've saved this for future reference because, even though we're pretty clean and tidy right now (while my partner and I are both working from home full-time) things may change when we have to go back to the office. I really liked your message about it essentially depending on what you want your personal base-line to be. I like the surfaces to be clear of clutter and wiped clean of dust, no dishes in the sink, and pillows and blankets to be straightened up on a daily basis. We generally reserve "real" cleaning to the weekends: toilets, floors, laundry, general scrubbing, etc.

I make sure my dishes are done everyday. There’s only two of us here and I’m unemployed right now so I only do laundry once a week. Trash is gathered up and disposed of every couple of days. I make sue my floors are swept/vacuumed every day. I don’t mop everyday. Every thing has a place and I make sure I put it back after it’s used. My main problem is dusting. I HATE to dust. I keep the furniture polish and rags sitting where I can just grab them up and get started. But, lol that time doesn’t come as often as I’d like.

  • @jenniferklotzer2794

My bathroom and kitchen sink, I always leave them clean and I always pick up after myself so the house remains tidy. I have chronic knee and lower back pain so my MIAs are the areas that cause the most pain if I let them go. I think about how much will it hurt now vs how much will it hurt later and recovery time. The key for me is to minimize the amount of time I spend bending and/or getting up and down off the floor (I can't squat or kneel) because those activities cause the most pain and have the longest recovery. So I might choose to wipe down the shower and skip vacuuming because vacuuming doesn't get harder if I let it go but the shower gets significantly harder if I don't stay on top of it.

Dishes are taken care of every night before going to bed. Whether that's washing them, running the dishwasher, or simply putting them in the dishwasher without running it, fine. It's just hubby and I so it doesn't have to be run every day. We're also on a private neighborhood well so we work on conserving water as much as possible. Then also the bed must be made every day - weekends too.

haha... I usually try and clean one or two things around my house each day but since I'm a full-time teacher and a full-time grad student, I have come to learn that there are going to be days where my house is sort of dirty & I am 100% okay with that! I spend my Saturdays pick up & cleaning my house, then on Sundays I do laundry & make everything up (like my couch & desk) - then through the week, I don't worry about clothes on the floor, or blankets & pillows on the couch, or mail stacked on the entry table - as long as my dishes are routinely done & my trash is taken out when full, then I am a happy camper!
It really is all a personal thing about how you are okay with your house being on a daily basis, I know my house is lived in & to be honest, during the week I don't do much at my house besides sitting at my desk or on the couch working on homework, & I usually will spend 8ish hours laying in bed (maybe I'll sleep for those 8hrs or maybe I will scroll through my phone for 4 & then sleep for 4... it's a toss up!)

To stay on top of laundry I keep a laundry basket in the room of each person. A full laundry basket pretty much equals one load. (Its me, my Husband and two teens). We each pretty much have a best day to do laundry so it works out that we each do our own laundry on different days. Since I wear dress clothes for work and change, I usually have two loads per week. Everyone else does one. We have a hamper for bathroom towels that get done once a week. I keep a small Dollar Tree bucket in each bathroom and one in my kitchen for hand towels and wash cloths. It really helps keep those from laying around everywhere.
