      This is utterly inspiring, you might have a week or two where things have gone downhill, but the point is to stay in the game and push through because you'll know that amazing week will happen again. Btw that chord progression for Jaded hits home! The less produced more acoustic version sounds killer already, reminds me of watching Forest's vid on 'Stick Season' by Noah Kahan, I totally agree with Forest that a song underproduced sounding amazing is the key to absolutely killer songwriting.
      Edit 2 : I really appreciate the extra effort into the editing of this vid! It really shows the passion and it's contagious through the screen

    This is exactly how this series should go. If anything, it demonstrates that changing course is part of the natural cycle of composition/arrangement/production. If we’re not feeling it in one place, go to another and so forth. Yep, I love this format of presentation, Nathan. Keep it natural, keep it real. I’m really digging it!

    Love coming home from work to these vids every Monday! So glad you're doing better. As I was watching I did think that a lot of the extra editing was unnecessary, the multiple camera angles seem like hell to set up and have the added effect of the audience no longer feeling like a fly on the wall. Having said that, maybe it's nice to see how the editing reflects your mood per week: the creative weeks full of energy while the slower weeks have a relaxed edit. I think the most important choice you can make is what do YOU want, because ultimately your enjoyment of the thing you're doing is going to shine through in whatever you make. See you next week!

      Good thoughts (also... sorry we haven't connected - as you can imagine things are a bit crazy lol).
      It's funny - as I am working a bit today on stuff this weeek - I think that as with many things... moderation is good. I think a combination of that raw and performance style is good - I am already leaning a bit "away" from this super produced feel this week and almost seeing where each week takes it

    I'm curious, do you practice a strict morning routine like wake up, coffee, work out, mediate, etc, before you get to work, or do you just wake up and basically get right into music? I assume it probably varies and some days you're insanely motivated first thing in the morning to immediately jump onto your computer to continue a great work in progress.

    • @NathanJamesLarsen
      @NathanJamesLarsen  7 місяців тому +2

      In earlier episodes I did show my morning routine... I start very usually normally... like between 5-5:30am and I make coffee and basically get to work immediately.

    • @Will_Bruce
      @Will_Bruce 7 місяців тому +1

      @NathanJamesLarsen Thanks for replying. Sorry if my question came off the wrong way. You seem like you're in good shape and look like you work out. I was wondering when you even have time to exercise while putting so much time and dedication to music.
      I wasn't sure exactly which parts of your day you decided to leave out as irrelevant to production/ songwriting or the video.
      And I did see what you showed in the earlier episodes where you woke up early with your plans, goals, and coffee.
      You are definitely a highly disciplined person. Even your endeavor to create and edit this weekly series (and produce so many songs) seems highly ambitious for most people, but it seems like you're up to the challenge and not intimidated at all.
      I used to watch some of your longer live stream videos making a song from start to finish. But seeing these longer day in the life videos of what a real professional prouder does is truly inspiring as an aspiring musician. I get to see what it really takes to be a dedicated working music producer.
      You make it look easy the way you balance your family life and other responsibilities with being productive and creative, and that's the way I aspire to be.

    • @NathanJamesLarsen
      @NathanJamesLarsen  7 місяців тому +1

      @@Will_Bruce doens't come off poorly at all... great question.
      So truthfully - so far this year I've not prioritized exercise, but last year I went to the gym every day (typically 2-3pm) and also a portion of the year was running training - like 45-60 minute runs.
      I want to get back into that but... I'll admit... ummm this whole series is taking a lot lol.
      So yeah I am usually up like 5/5:30am and spend 20-30 minutes with my morning routine, and then I come straight to the studio and work for a couple hours before anyone is awake - that's when I do a lot of video editing, sometimes music, sometimes admin stuff.
      For me - in terms of working out - I prefer afternoons because I usually get an afternoon slump and feel sloggish so that helps me get a strong finish to the day and get a boost of energy... but lately, I am just focusing entirely on balancing out the combo of video and music making to get back to a place where I can reasonably sacrifice an hour to get back in the gym.
      Life is all about priorities... and I also believe life tends to be seasonal... like, this series is not gonna be "balls to the wall" every week - some weeks it'll slow down and I'll ease off the gas... but to start this year I really needed to make sure I was "all in" to learn the so-called "hard way"
      And trust me - I'm learning a lot... Like, this video was painstakingly difficult to make and I honestly dont think I can sustain that LEVEL of quality every week right now as a solo-creator. and I want to work alone until I really figure out "what this is" and then I can start building a team around that.
      I need to almost "eat, sleep, drink" this until I understand it and then I can teach someone else how they can come in and take the load off a bit.
      So anyways... I was not always disciplined - but it's like a muscle. The more you force yourself to do hard things - the more manageable they become.
      I'm slowly figuring out the "groove" and I think that in a few weeks I'm gonna get back to that daily or even a "few times per week" workout in. I sleep better and feel better when I do. I've always had sleep problems and exercise is the only thing I've ever found that actually helps me.
      As far as "ambition" -- I think 99% of people can do more than they believe they can... but most don't because they know it's hard and put limits on themselves - for me, I've learned that I almost need to give myself some insane task where it's like "is that even possible?" And then it becomes an obsession to prove it.

    • @NathanJamesLarsen
      @NathanJamesLarsen  7 місяців тому +1

      Devastator Evolution by KeepForest
      Evolve by Heavyocity (and the whole evolve series)
      Circles drums is one I use a lot (dont think in this video)

    Just wondering whats your schedule like per week? Im really very inspired to see how you actually arrange your time to really keep this going! Well done man! Kudos from over the other side of the world !

      It depends a bit week to week but generally speaking - It's split about 50/50 from music and "everything else" (being video, running my course, admin, calls, etc.)
      Typically I start work pretty early like 6am and work till 5pm with little breaks sprinkled in. So probably working 50-60 hours per week just depending on the workload. Some weeks it's much less and others are more "grind weeks" where I could work every night for a few hours after kids are in bed too.

    I don't know film production terms but thought it was so cool how you had those transparent DAW overlays with your other video. So interesting to watch your process

      This. The effect is visually striking but it retains the information from your DAW... while keeping us engaged with your expressions+reactions so you keep up the storytelling momentum. It's the best editing change in this episode by far!

    Love your orchestral/cinematic compositions brother! What do you think about cinematic composers like Hans Zimmer, Thomas Newman,
    James Newton Howard? They are my favorite composers for cinematic music.

      Thanks! Yeah, I love all those composers. Fantastic music from all of them. Different things I appreciate from each, too.
      Interestingly enough my favorite film from James Newton Howard is the Peter Jackson King Kong. The music is stunningly good.

      Thats a great soundtrack! Water for Elephants (James Newton Howard) and The Road to Perdition (Thomas Newman) are soundtracks you should check out if you haven't heard them before :)@@NathanJamesLarsen

      @@NathanJamesLarsen That's a great film and soundtrack! Have you seen/heard "Road to Perdition" (Thomas Newman) or
      "Water for Elephants" (James Newton Howard), the soundtracks in both of them are incredible and I highly recommend them if you haven't seen/heard them. The song you were producing in this video reminds me of their music.
      I went to music school for classical music performance and spent over 15 years living/performing in the classical music lifestyle but I sadly burnt out of it 1 year into grad school, and several years later in 2023 I discovered how happy music production makes me. I want to do it the rest of my life.
      Your music is inspiring, and I am glad that you are sharing your work and processes ❤
