Running 5k to marathon distances competitively myself, I can say that, especially when adrenaline is spiking, your mind just goes blank and you’re on autopilot. You stop hearing and seeing your surroundings, you feel the fatigue but your mind is not processing it, all your mind knows is to keep moving.
Running never gets easier, you just get faster, there’s good days and then there’s the really bad ones and when you learned to endure the suffering in training, your mind will somehow just override a total shutdown of your body during a race. There’s races where I had a really bad day myself and I don’t remember portions of it, it’s all just a blur. Come to think of it, it’s actually a little scary how powerful the mind can be because, yes, this is absolutely not healthy.
