    The duty-free shopping is not seen in Asuncion so much as it is on the border with Brazil, in Ciudad Del Este (City of the East), about 340 Km from Asuncion. In that region of the country you can also visit the second largest hydroelectric dam in the world (the first one is in China), by the name of Represa Itaipu, a binational (Paraguay-Brazil) entity. Paraguay is one of few countries with totally clean, renewable energy. In fact, it produces more energy than it consumes, and the surplus is sold to Brazil,

    In the war of the Triple Alliance, Paraguay fought against 3 other countries, Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. After 5 years (1865-1870), Paraguay lost not just the war but 80% of its male population and a lot of its territory, including the famous Yguazu waterfalls. The country was left in ruins with mainly women and children. The whole world was at war then, for example, in the US you had their Civil war going on,
