I found it satisfying that this explanation was lean and crystal clear. To the point, yet nuanced where necessary. Thumbs up!

Kim and Team …you folks have been so helpful to me in the last few years, I can’t tell you how many books, podcasts and words of advice I’ve shared of Radical Candor. And I’m loving the MasterClass! Thank you, sincerely! Keep up the great work!

Yes. Most of this sounds like an excellent way to be fired. It all seems pretty naive about how our world actually works-how afraid a lot of us are of losing our jobs when being out of work often comes with the very real threat of homelessness, starvation, death, and-most twisted of all-that we’d then “deserve” those horrible outcomes because we “couldn’t keep a job.”

@@SteveJubs Indeed. I think the whole radical candour thing forgets that people are human and things don't work like this. It'd be great if they did. I think this system works better if you just use it on yourself.

I could not relate with this more! Every company says they want their employees to be candid and to 'give feedback upwards as well as downwards' but it is very rare for employees to feel safe enough to be this open, much less for employers and leaders to take it well.
I worked at an agency where they banged on about radical candor constantly. That same place was RIFE with backstabbing and people running off to others' managers to tell on them for the smallest mistake or slip-up. Then one day I was 'radically candid' with my manager about the behaviour of another senior manager who'd been making me miserable for months. One week after we had that conversation I was fired.

I've been practicing this my whole career (20+ years) just because it's the type of person I am. Two things happen. 1) I'm praised for being an excellent worker and solving problems. 2) I get reported to HR for being an asshole in one way or another. The truth is that there are some people who are not equipped to handle negative feedback in any form. I'm not sure if they can change or not because I've never seen it happen. They generally just remain a problem to be worked around by the rest of the team.

The unfortunate thing about radical candor is that many like to use it as a stick with which to beat people with. Criticism should always be constructive instead of destructive.
