  • Shows how to install a Scotts sub-mount steering damper on a 2017 Husqvarna TE250. The install is the same for 2017 KTM EXC Sixdays 2-stroke and 4-stroke bikes. Standard model 2017 KTM EXC models do not require the 10mm speedo mount spacers as the cast triple clamps are different.

    Great video, really appreciate all of the torque settings and the bolt sizes on the replacements as well as the tap size. That type of info can be time consuming to find.

    Good man removing the forks! I think this should be done regardless, so you can be sure everything goes back on square and parallel.

    Hi, today I mounted my new Scotts damper in my 2019 Husqvarna FE 250, the process is the same as in the video, as the triple clamper is the same, and thank you for your video, it is very precise and detailed, but I have 2 problems.
    First, when I torqued the frame bracket to 10 Nm, it was not enough, after all the parts installed I moved the handlebar right and left, to see if the damper work and the frame bracket rotated to one side, so it was not well tightened, the 10 Nm was not enough, don't know why.
    Then I disassembled all again, looked at the head tube, it was cleaned, no lub or grease, maybe the tint was very smooth... so I removed the tint with a file, cleaned all with brake cleaner and mounted the bracket again, but this time I torqued it a little more, 15 Nm... all mounted again, moved the handlebar right and left, and the frame bracket did not rotate this time, but it leaned back, now I have maybe 2 mm of the head tube of the frame above the frame bracket, only in the rear part, and the spindle stayed close to rear of the arm link, not in the center of the hole, as it might be... don't know what am I doing wrong.
    I bought the Scotts damper apart from the mounting kit, could the link arm be short for this bike/setup? I did measure between the center of the holes of the link arm and get 40mm.
    Anyone knows the length between holes of the correct link arm for these 2019 Huskvarnas ?
    Thanks

    Great video, thank you. I'm about to do this task over the next few weeks but am wondering how big of a necessity it is to remove the front tire and lover triple clamp? Based on the video it's not clear to me why that was required, or maybe i just need to watch it again

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  3 роки тому

      Thanks and pleased that you enjoyed the video. You can leave the front wheel and forks assembled if you like. But you will need to use a strap (tie down works) to stop the lower triple clamp sliding out while you have the top triple clamp off. Eg you could have a tie down going from the axle, round the frame top tube and down to the other side of the axle. But I prefer to remove the wheel and forks as it only takes a couple of minutes and then you can easily install everything without the use of straps (and can inspect and grease the lower triple clamp bearing too).

    Well, first of all, thanks for the detailed Informations. Second, the damper will cost about more than 600 Euro. Will the advantage of this amount will be worth every penny?

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 років тому +1

      Hobby Endurist - Cheaper if you buy from the US. Some people like steering dampers and others don't. If you ride a lot of roots and rocks you'll probably like it and having one installed may help prevent you crashing. Only you can decide whether that is worth the cost.

    Enjoying the tutorial videos. Just wondering if a steering damper is necessary unless you guys are doing really flat out open riding?

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  7 років тому +2

      Having a steering damper fitted allows me to ride more relaxed and I'm certain reduces the chances of high siding due to the front wheel deflecting off something. Certainly at medium to high speeds...

  • @JonLloyd65
    @JonLloyd65 4 роки тому

    Thanks Mark. I have a question... With the addition of the Scotts mount plate to the top triple clamp, you effectively raise the handlebar height by the corresponding amount. Is that correct or did I miss something? I went back to the beginning of the video and it appears as though the original mount were used on top of the mount plate...?

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, the bar height is raised by about 25mm if a sub mount is used. If you don't want to raise the bar height you can either use a sub mount and lower bend bars, or use a top mount system which doesn't change the bar height. I prefer the sub mount as I like having my bars higher than stock and also you are less likely to hit the steering damper in a crash.

    Getting ready to install one on my 18 xcw, if I need to remove slag from the weld, should I touch up the frame paint to prevent rust? or will just a good smearing of grease do the trick?

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  5 років тому

      If you can paint it it’s a good idea as it will provide more permanent rust protection than grease.

  • @mototrailz

    wow! i wish you were my friend. The precise work is amazing. I have a question tho once you instal that damper you bar sits higher up and that would be a problem for me because the way they are stock is just perfect for me. Any ways around that? Again amazing vid

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  5 років тому +1

      Thanks. If you want to keep the bars at stock height and fit a Scotts steering damper you have two choices: 1) Use a top mount 2) Use a sub-mount with a low bars (which Scotts do sell- search for Steering Damper Low- EVO). If you don't mind the steering damper above the bars the top mount solution would be the cheapest as you can use your current bars.

    • @TokyoOffroad

    Great video, thorough and quick ... is this the same install for the KTM 500 exc-f 2017 .. thanks

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 років тому

      Yes, the install should be almost the same. The only difference may be the speedo clearance required around the steering stabilizer frame mount. My advice is to fit the stabilizer as shown in the video, then check carefully for any possible clearance issues.

    What country are you in , I noticed signal lights . Are they factory ? I have a 2016 TE 250 and want to make is street legal

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  6 років тому

      Japan. The bike shown in the video has KTM factory front turn signals and aftermarket rear turn signals. It's difficult to recommend the KTM signals for offroad use as they are quite large and can be broken quite easily (either the lens breaks, or the rubber stalk snaps off). On my bike I use Tuff Lites on the front and ebay purchased low profile LED turn signals on the rear. If using LED turn signals you'll also need to fit a solid state flasher relay and diodes on the turn signal indicator lamp.

      No, the stock triple clamp supports the handlebar clamps no problem. I only add spacers when fitting the steering damper sub-mount to provide more support...

    What does it do and do you think it’s worth it?

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  4 роки тому

      A steering damper helps stop the front wheel being deflected when you hit rocks etc at speed. It allows me to relax more while riding and not grip the bars so tightly. I think they are worth the cost as a quality unit like the Scotts will last 10 years, or more.
