Until now, I’ve thought that “the die is cast” for David because of his murder of Uriah and sin with Bathsheba, and now we just have to watch the consequences descend on David’s house due to God’s judgment. But look how often throughout today’s reading that no one consults the Lord! Deception is at every turn, with Amnon deceiving his father, Joab trying to deceive David, Absolom setting the field afire to get Joab’s attention, Absolom deceiving the people, and David exiling Absolom. The only time David prays to God, He answers: “Let Ahitophel give foolish advice.” God is waiting to forgive, to intervene, to save and restore, and He can save us from a world of deceit if we will not hide our hearts from Him and each other.
Good morning, fellow Bible readers. Today was jam-packed with family drama. It is nice to be reminded no matter our circumstances, God is and always be who He says He is and fulfills He word. While God is being just and giving David the punishment He stated, He would. He also is also with David through it and answering his prayers, WOW!
While he continued to pay the "wages" of his sin against Bathsheba through the death of his infant son, as well as his own children turning on him, God still showed His Grace and Mercy on David. While we still have to deal with the consequences of our own sins, God still shows mercy towards us when we repent. Thanks for sharing and posting. God Bless You.
I thought the same thing. I got lost in the story of who was who and what was happening. Wow, it was so much easier to understand after listening to Tara explain it. Thank you for the Recap Tara Leigh Cobble
Good morning! Thank u for another great video and recap! You are a gifted teacher! It's a blessing to watch your Bible recap videos each morning! God bless you!
I just love how you translate what can be confusing texts and stories to follow into understandable, relatable pictures! Thank you! Your explanations and clarifications excites me for more! I'm way behind, but can't wait for more!
Every time I get to the passage about Tamar, I cringe. I don't want to read it. I wish it didn't happen and turned out different. My God shot is 2 Sam 14:14, ..."But God does not take away life; instead he devises ways so that a banished person may not remain estranged from him." Our God's love for us is so great. He made a way for us to be in relationship with Him for eternity. 💕
Yes, she made me laugh a few times in this one that I am just now getting to, even though some of the content of today's reading was so not laughable. Tara-Leigh is funny though in this episode. 😂
Someone once questioned my choice of the name Judah for my son (because of his mistakes). I said, "Look at David! That's always been a popular name." The point is, we're all lowlifes without God's grace.
In Hebrew, Judah means "Praise." The name originated in Leah's words of praise to the Lord on account of Judah's birth: "Now will I praise Jehovah, and she called his name Judah." Genesis 29:35
Two years Absalom allows his anger to fester. Then, he takes matters into his own hands, because his father David did nothing. Absalom's anger has created a great garden for his pride to grow beyond his control. Makes sense why God was swift to punish the Israelites in the desert. Sin spreads like a cancer left unchallenged
You said David did nothing. What would you have had David done? To kill his own son Amnon? It obvious David loved all his children and he would not want anything at all to happen to anyone of them. David was just getting the consequences of his sins even though God has forgiven him. The lesson here is just as a father to his child disciplines his child for wrong doing because he loved the child also God will always discipline us as his children because he loves us and we will have to pay the consequences of our Wrong doings even though we have received forgiveness through Jesus Christ.
@JoshuaOAdesiyan the problem is, Tamar was also his daughter, and justice was by no means served. David did nothing. I can understand that he didn't want to kill his firstborn son, as required by law. But at least exile him. But instead David did nothing, and Tamar was the one who essentially had to live a life of solitude and "exile"? That seems more like a moment of weakness from David than love. A loving parent disciplines their children, not turn a blind eye and pretend it didn't happen
“We must all die; we are like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God will not take away life, and he devises means so that the banished one will not remain an outcast.” 2 Samuel 14:14 ESV God Himself made a plan, Jesus, so that we will not be outcasts to His Kingdom. We live because He lives. Hallelujah.
Wow. Drama. Chaos. Sin. Through this all God has a plan to help us. I read this verse and it is God who is Sovereign and loving over all. He makes a way so we, outcasts, can live in His Kingdom, His family. The means is Jesus. “We must all die; we are like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God will not take away life, and HE DEVISES means so that the banished one will not remain an outcast.” 2 Samuel 14:14 ESV
Today's reading broke my heart. David's children suffered the consequence of David's sin against Urriah and Bathsheba. God forgives our sins but He does not take the consequences away. Even through it all, God was with David. David has been on the run before when Saul wanted to kill him. Now he is on the run because of his son Absalom. I wonder if he remembered how God delivered him last time with Saul and took courage that God would do the same this time around with Absalom. "If He did it before, He can do it again. Same God right now, same God back then"- Tye tribbett
Just what God said would happen as a consequence of David's sin is happening with his own son Absalom conspiring against him. 2 Sam 14:14 stood out to me- God desires the restoration of people to Himself.
Thus is a tough read. But, Nathan, the prophet, had told David that there would be consequences for his sin against Bathsheba. They are now playing out in these chapters. Amnon rapes his half-sister Tamar. Absalom, full brother of Tamar, finds out, and hatred builds up in his heart. David finds out about this incident, but even though it angers him, he does nothing about it. Justice should have been served against Amnon and David as the king did nothing. Absalom hatches a plan to murder Amnon, then flees. Even though David mourns for Absalom to return, Joab is the one who executes the plan to bring him back. Then, when Absalom is brought back, David refuses to see him. There's no excuse for Absalom and his actions, but it's no wonder that his heart turns cold. He ultimately steals the hearts of many people and sets up a plan to make himself king. Complacency, anger, bitterness, and revenge are what take place in this story. When sin is not dealt with, chaos and ugliness happen. The interesting person in this narrative is Jonadab. What an instigator! He gives Amnon the idea to take what he wants, which leads to Tamar being raped. Then, he is the first one there to spill the beans to David about Absalom's murder plot against Amnon. This is definitely a crazy story. But, I most certainly agree with Tara-Leigh that God is in all of these details and is sovereign over the outcome.
Emphasis on David heard about the incident between Amnon and Tamar but does nothing about it. When Jonadab told king David that only Amnon died, I went back to check only to find he's the same person who advised Amnon on taking Tamar in. Indeed he's an instigator 😂 Thank you for the end note: "when sin isn't dealt with, chaos and ugliness happens". 😊
So much pain in this passage! So many chances to do the right thing, and all of them missed. David should have executed his son, Amnon, after the rape. Two years went by and he did not act, though he was "displeased." Absalom took justice into his own hands and had his servants kill Amnon. Then he fled, but his father did not act, either to condemn or aquit Absalom. This passivity was evil in a godly leader. Absalom came to despise his father as leader and sought to take the kingdom by politics. And then when he made his move, Instead of going to war against his son, David just fled and waited in the wilderness. It is as if he felt he had lost the ability to be a decisive King when he sinned with Bathsheba and by murdering her husband. But God's prophecy will come true, regardless of how. Fascinating about Ahithophel being Bathsheba's grandfather.
This is a tough read! I have to admit I’m struggling a bit to understand why TLC isn’t pointing out the obvious. David punished the wrong son! Absolom’s rage against his brother was a burden his father should have carried! Tamar deserved vindication. In my mind Absolom is on the right side of justice! His anger is righteous indignation! This is hitting hard for me.
I agree. Even if Absalom's rage wasn't "righteous" in my opinion, he definitely had a reason to be angry and seeking of justice. Tamar essentially had to live a life of exile and solitude, and later Absalom too, because David refused to take action against the real perpetrator, Amnon. Obviously Absalom's actions from there on were driven by rage and evil, but it might have been prevented if justice was served from the beginning
Interesting that Absalom, after coming back to Jerusalem from Geshur had children and named his daughter Tamar. It seems as if he was still lamenting his sister’s disgrace and loved her so much that he named his daughter after her. It continued to fuel his anger against his father David.
I took a break from reading TBR because of all of the killing, i decide to come back and give it another try and this day has rape, murder, lying, ..... Pray for me to continue .... This is harder than i thought it would be.
I'm praying for you! I've read through the Bible several times in my life, and I don't remember all of the killing and rape. I think I just read to get through the Bible. I do find myself saying, "Hey, wait a minute, God." I love having TLC explain what's going on. Sometimes, she makes me feel better. One thing that I keep trying to remember but still have trouble with is to look for God. That may help you, too. Maybe not, but I wanted to respond and let you know you're not alone. 😊
@@jennifermcilroy2999 Thank you so much, Jennifermcilroy. I was really struck by the fact that David didn't call out to God on what he should do. I was surprised that Tara Leigh didn't mention this. That really confuses me.
In the course of time, Amnon son of David fell in love with Tamar, the beautiful sister of Absalom son of David. David sent word to Tamar at the palace: “Go to the house of your brother Amnon and prepare some food for him.” But when she took it to him to eat, he grabbed her and said, “Come to bed with me, my sister.” “No, my brother!” she said to him. “Don’t force me! Such a thing should not be done in Israel! Don’t do this wicked thing. But he refused to listen to her, and since he was stronger than she, he raped her. When King David heard all this, he was furious. Absalom ordered his men, “Listen! When Amnon is in high spirits from drinking wine and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon down,’ then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Haven’t I given you this order? Be strong and brave.” But Jonadab son of Shimeah, David’s brother, said, “My Lord should not think that they killed all the princes; only Amnon is dead. This has been Absalom’s express intention ever since the day Amnon raped his sister Tamar. King David longed to go to Absalom, for he was consoled concerning Amnon’s death. 2 Samuel 13:1, 7, 11-12, 14, 21, 28, 32, 39
