Unfortunately one of the times he did this the random guy was a gang-banger who was quicker on the draw and had a real gun.
The legal precedent I’m more interested in: If someone fake-robs me and then hands my wallet back to tell me it was a prank, am I legally allowed to beat the everloving shit out of them for making me un-ironically piss myself?
There’s a very good reason why these kinds of pranks are either staged or happen in states where there is almost 0 concealed carry. I will shed no tears and the genetic pool is better for it. 🎩 🐍 no step on SNEK! 🇭🇰🇺🇸
Even in states or countries without concealed carry, this is still stupid because there are plenty of people around the world that carry illegally ... there are others that carry knives (legally and illegally) and there are still others that will just take the knife away from you and use it on you. But even if your would-be victims don't flip out and kill you, the chances that you'll get caught, arrested and tried for armed robbery make this really stupid (and I doubt there's a court on the planet that is going to let you off of your armed robbery charge because you claim it was "just a prank").

Thats a good way of looking at it. So many people live online, they live in a bubble of anonymity, where there are no consequences for their actions and they can say whatever they want without a shut off. So when they take that mindset to the real world, its only then when the bubble pops.
This is why when these college idiots and sjws are out in these protests, they behave like animals because their bubble popped and they can only behave irrationally, they have no structure to anything they do outside of their bubble.
