- Today we're picking up where we left off from last week's video on preparing for Windows 10 EOL next year. I'll link it here:
• Support for Windows 10...
We're going to explore the process of 'testing' Linux Mint 22 'Wilma' on a Windows 10 Computer to make sure it suits our needs. In preparation for this, we'll download the Linux ISO and download Balena Etcher to flash the ISO on a USB Drive.
After testing, we'll install Linux and install a few apps and take a tour to show the similarities Linux has with Windows!
Please comment on which distros of Linux you've tried and what you use it for and Subscribe to Mackey Tech if you haven't done so already!

I have 3 systems two are on a rack, one desktop. LM 22 is on one on the rack used as a Blender rendering system the other is my desktop. The third runs TrueNAS scale for my movies, tv shows, music and backups.
I dual boot between Win 10 Pro and Linux Mint when I need bare metal Windows for some games that don't run well under Proton or Lutris.
I also have Win 10 pro virtual machine on the Linux side of my desktop system for quick things that I can get away with instead of rebooting.
I installed Linux Mint yesterday on an old Asus computer. Had to format the usb stick to fat32. Only then the usb did start Linux. It runs very smooth.
@@prutser132 Ahh that’s good advice! Thanks for the feedback
I’m running Linux mint 22 is great I’m about 4 months using it 👍👌
@@hec07 Very nice! Thanks for the comment!
Yes it totally can, if you don't care about (or don't have) Dolby audio and HDR, or IR camera for logon. Aside of that, yeah Linux can be great, if you have the time to figure it out first. Otherwise, Windows with debloat and firewall to block the BS is best for 99% people. Source: been trying to switch to Linux for past 15 years.
@@fingpolak Agreed! If Microsoft wasn’t such a pig by constantly pushing Edge and One drive in addition to its questionable privacy practices, I would be much more of a fan! What’s your Linux distro of choice?
Ive used Windows since the 90's and started using Ubuntu 7 years ago. In the last 6 months I have tried Mint and i love it. I now use Linux Mint 21.3 for 95% of my computer usage. Yeah I think Linux Mint will replace many Windows users who are tired of the failed updates and of course the awful Windows 11 which I will skip completely and stick with 10 Pro and I still have a music recording tower with 7 Pro I still use. As far as everyday stuff I will continue with Mint.
@@mauer62 I came from Ubuntu also and really like Mint much better also because it’s rock solid! Thanks for the comment and feedback!
I have used Windows for decades and since they moved to NT kernel, I have not encountered any stability issues, stuck updates or the like. When "Windows crashes" it basically means your hardware is faulty or overclocked too far. The few machines I receive with update issues are drastically underpowered and update took so long Windows assumed something went wrong and returned situation before update. We are talking Celeron-class CPUs with 4Gb on RAM and a soldered USB stick as a harddrive (eMMC) here. People who claim to have Windows issues tend to be Linux users and sometime Apple users. People who actually use Windows are mostly just fine unless they chose hardware poorly.
THEYVE BEEN SAYING THAT SINCE WINDOWS 95/VISTA
Yes! As rough and as unintuitive as Lennox was back in the late 1990s, it was a far cry from Windows’ constant and notorious BSD!
I tried teaching my 80 year old parents how to use Linux. My dad seems to get the basics, but my mom couldn't care less. lol I think if I can get their games to run on it, it'd be fine since that's all they really do. Older games like Hoyle Card Games I can't get to work even with Proton and Wine.
what you have to do, is remove all partitions EFI and MRT also Primary partition, as Linux EFI is different, and will sometimes fails to install also same goes when installing windows 11 due to MRT changed to GPT partition
Are you referring to dual booting?
@@MackeyTech installing or installing new OS sometimes the program dose not change the partitions correctly and sometimes you have to make sure all partition are removed from the hdd or you could get failed install or the OS to run due to boot partition not set up right. the nuc might just need a firmware update or the hdd formatted correctly.
If Linux could play "the games" then i would switch in an instant. It does everything else I need, but until it runs them or devs make Linux versions, there's no point in making the move which is a tad annoying because i want to get away from M$
I couldn’t agree with you more! I would miss my D4 😂
Which games do you play that don't work on Linux currently?
@@donaldbaird7849 I think by the use of term "The Games" they probably mean some games generally as some anti-cheats don't work properly. Use PUBG for instance, don't think that works still.
I got rid of Windows years ago and have never looked back.I was dual booting Windows and Linux for years and not long after the dawn of Windows 10 moved permanently to Linux only.I would never go back to using such a bloated, spyware ridden and malware ridden piece of crap as Microsoft creates,I am Linux and BSD only now and always will be.
@@derekr54 I definitely can see what mean about Windows! I hate the ads and spamming about using Office and OneDrive… What Distro do you use?
@@MackeyTech I use quite a few distro's,Linux Mint,Fedora,Ubuntu,MX Linux,Solus, open SUSE Tumbleweed and Manjaro at the moment on my Desktop and laptops.
I recently switched to arch Linux with X11 and way happier on this than Windows 11. I mainly use it for pc gaming stuff like steam, discord, web browsing, and will be using it with vr soon.
@@steveb6817 Thanks for comment! I’ve not used X11, I’ll have to give it a go!
I find that its incredibly easy to brick Linux distros (if they even install correctly) I've had worse luck in the past 15 years with it than I have with Windows for 35 years.
Also in 2024 I shouldn't HAVE to compile things or run a terminal to install basic software. Can I use a terminal? yes, but I honestly OCD about not having a GUI.
I spent years on Mint before switching to Manjaro. I have Manjaro on two PC's and Arch on another. Manjaro and other distros that have KDE as a desktop environment choice I personally think are a much closer visual approximation and familiarity to Windows than Mint and any of their desktop environments offered are. I learned more about linux by getting away from the hand holding newbie distro's.
Manjaro is definitely on my list to check out! Thanks for your comment 😎
No. Windows has Edge, Copilot, comes with remote assist included, runs Office 365, common commercial software and games, so I fail to see Linux as an alternative to desktop use unless you are a very basic user who only needs a web browser and an email client.
@@TechTusiast
thanks for the feedback! The only thing missing from Linux would be something analogous to Copilot and I haven’t read very favorable reviews of copilot stay tuned for my next video where I’m going to discuss alternatives to office 365!
No, because Linux isn't Windows. That's what's good about Linux.
There’s definitely a lot of benefits to running Linux!
@@MackeyTech Sure are!
@@notjustforhackers4252Definitely more so than Windows! It just a little more time to bake to support more games ❤
