I recall several identical news conferences from the Maple Leafs in 1984, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1999, 2004 when I stopped being a Leafs fan. 2024 news conference - blah blah blah.
Think back to the 70’s and early 80’s under Ballard, yes he made money, but we noticed the arena not packed with people on week nights, I saw on multiple times whole sections in the upper deck empty! I was able to get tickets from scalpers ,less than face value! Could this happen again , I say so! They knew it! I know Leafnation is huge, but if they keep fleecing us fans, they will rule the day!
this is like a company I worked 5 yrs for who went thu in 15 yrs I know of, fired 22 managers and 22 supervisors but the regional manager is still there.... and the company is still rotten
The Bruins couldn't Move Coyle because who in the world want to pay 5.5 million for a fourth line center. Same goes for Marner, what team would be stupid enough to pay someone 11 million for two 30 goal seasons. The Leafs are stuck with him for the life of his contract, unless they buy him out. The major problem the Leasf have is 52% of their salary cap it tied up in 4 players. So it the 4 players do not produce, there is no supporting cast to back them up.
The definition of insanity is... Steve, you're insane for expecting a different result. Give it a rest. We already know this team will not win for a long time.
I'm surprised Shanahan is still employed there. It's been 10+ years. His fingerprints are all over this team. His influence has allowed this culture to continue. If he isn't fired, then the Leafs will not move on past the "failures" label that has been put on them, by their own actions.
I had someone point out to me recently that Shanahan probably didn’t fire both Dubas and Keefe last season to keep a scapegoat on hand to buy himself some time.
Brendan Shanahan says the accountability and responsibility is on him, if that were true he would not have a job still. It's up to the fans now. I know fans will continue to go to games so the Maple Leafs front office knows they still get a pass
I hope the Leafs can extend Domi because I think he deserves it; he plays with a lot of heart on a team that simply lacks it. I also hope they can keep Bertuzzi, he started slow but he gathered steam as the season went along and he's a battler. We need players like that a lot more than we do any of the 'stars' that vanish as soon as the playoffs begin.
FIRE SHANAHAN. The Leafs will do as little as possible to change anything. Keefe is gone: big deal. This is all falling in line for another failure next season. FECKING FIRE SHANAHAN. Are these feckers kidding? This Pelley dude will feck up. FECK UP, MOVE UP, like Dubas. FIRE SHANAHAN. Am I repeating myself?
Leafs window will close next year but reopen in 2 years. Marner and Tavares will come off the books . Easton Cowan will come up. Treliving will build a strong big d line and get a more physical team.

@@peaceonearth7142 this is a shockingly dumb take. Willy’s pace was effectively unchanged after the contract, only really dipping when he was moved to a limited third line role towards the end of the season. Mitigates any risk of going into a contract year without a deal… he’s not going to go through this season without a contract and risk a massive injury or an off season lmaoooo.
If Berube has any Common Sense he’ll stay far away from the Leafs organization. The Leafs are as disfunctional a team as you can possibly get in hockey thinking they can win a Stanley Cup with a team built like an NBA roster with a core 4 taking up almost half of the salary cap. No coach, not even one as good at motivating and getting the best out of his players as Berube could win with a team constructed this poorly. I say it every year that the Leafs roster is flawed in design, yet the Leafs are content beating this dead horse into the ground year in and year out with their core 4.
@@ronmatthews2164 It’s not even the players fault that their performance is worse in the playoffs since they are playing against the most elite teams that can designate their top lines often as shutdown lines and still have enough depth to score goals whereas the Leafs don’t have that luxury due to having so much of their cap tied up in just a few players. Everything wrong with the Leafs is being caused by their bloated contracts to their top players and everything can be fixed if the Leafs ever want to by eliminating some of that cap weight to add more depth to their roster.
Well if Brendan Shanahan does leave Toronto, he could be useful in Detroit as we need some Red Wing fire power to help us win more games and simply find the right guys for playoff contention
The leafs don't lack the talent or skill. They lack in the intangibles, grinding out the boards to win a puck battle, blocking shots, make players scared to gain the blue line, battle in front of the net. If you're soft in all those areas, the other teams don't hesitate, flinch, or even get worn down, it's high end no contact beer league hockey. Good luck winning a cup with that level of Charmin softness.
Id love if Treliving pulled this one out: Marner to Nasville (if he agrees to, he might, its a promising organization with at least a few good prospects like Askarov) in exchange for Juuse Saros and Dante Fabbro. I think the problem of scoring in the playoffs comes most notably down to coching, but this could fix the blue line and the issues in net. (Saros and Marner are both entering their last year of contract next season which imo makes this trade more doable for both teams)
he LEafs do not have to get VALUE back for Marner in a trade .The VALUE is the Cap space that they gain ( a couple of " cant miss" defence prospects and a 1st round pick would do it ) .As long as we waives and you get his cap hit off the books that is the name of the game .The UFA pool this summer is full of guys that have been absolute BEASTS in the playoffs recently ( Montour ,Marchesault,Stamkos ,Reinhart and Toffoli just to name a few ) One or more of these guys on the Leafs could carry them over the playoff hump
Exactly. Freeing up Cap Space with a Marner move is all the Leafs require. Marner can walk in a year with no return, let's just move that up by a full season.
I am glad you are doing this on your own. I really can't stand how you are being treated on the SDPN episodes which I watch because of YOU. I think your talent is greater than even your passion for the Leafs. Your timing and delivery is very important, and it is getting stepped on way too often. I'm sure your friend Sid Seixeiro would agree. I am not suggesting that you step away from your passion, or away from the unique brand that you have carved out. I am saying that you are unique and people that do not care about hockey one tiny bit enjoy your presentation. Don't let anyone's " shut up I'm talking " left arm, or anything else stifle you. I have been a Leafs fan/victim long enough to have seen them win Stanley Cups, and you have breathed new life into my own fandom. Thank you, Steve. I hope that you appreciate yourself as much as so many others do.
Shanny … it’s on me but Kyle paid the price last year and Sheldon gets that honor this year? Just go in and negotiate a nice golden parachute and move on.
Everyone talks about what a wonderful regular season team the Leafs are. I’m not so sure. Oh yes, they can easily get 100 points and make the playoffs no problem. But they never win the division and almost every year have to start the playoffs on the road. They COULD win the division if they would stop losing regular season games to teams like Columbus and Ottawa. Anyway, I think the goal should not only be the Stanley Cup. I would set the initial goal as finishing in the top 2 in the division, and preferably, first.
@@BrianTheLeafsGuy score more than 1G every 7 Playoff games? Sounds reasonable. Have more than 2pts in 7 Playoff games? Sounds reasonable as well. it warms my heart seeing SDPN go belly up... i was rooting for the guys, but they've been dropping the ball and treating people like shit for months (lots of tea out there)
Shanahan did a decent job tanking, hiring Lou, and bringing in Babcock (before he went bonkers). It went off the rails when he fired Lou to promote Kyle. Kyle and Babcock were never on the same page, and then Kyle went and got Tavares. I love Tavares but they should have targeted a defenseman or 2. Tavares is a great hockey player, but just didn't gell on this team. Also didn't help that Lou punted Verhaeghe who developed into the greatest all-around hockey player. IMO a better coach will usher in a more defensive style of play that wins. Somehow Toronto will have to get a better defenseman.
I am amazed that the 4 weeks excuse, was used, at that level, you mean when you took the job you didn’t have a vision of what you wanted to do,you were hired as a CEO,
Steves like " wait a sec , not everyone listens to the pod , opportunity to cover the same topic again and make more cash " Can't blame you papa dangle
Tbh he needs to do it since the Leafs don't give him 4-21 more games a year. And this and the podcast are both his jobs and the podcast costs him money aswell.
If they get a second round win and show progress next season, he'll deserve an extension. Not sure if everyone can remember what Leafs nation was like the day before Shanny was hired. 1995-2015 were twenty tough years, we've now had ten fun ones.
99 and 02 had conference final runs and a bunch of fun playoff experiences from 99-04 until the lockout. Even the Muskoka 5 did better than the par 4. shanny to get an extension for a 2nd round expectation is so lackluster and destined for at best... at best 1 cup run with the best goal scorer of our generation who's a selkencandidate. We're forever fucked if that's the best we can do, with all this $ and culture.
At this point the only way to salvage the Leafs is to completely change the franchise. Name, logo, colors, everything. The heritage of failure is too heavy a curse.
You know why? Cause MLSE's goal is NOT to have the Leafs win a cup, it's to make money. They look at financial reports and see that the Leafs make a fuck ton of money, and that the ''Core Four'' generates fuck ton of it aswell. They optimize for profitabilty, not to win a championship. That's my take anyways
so you’re telling me that they’d prefer only having 3 home games to make money and 7 for the square being open, rather than potentially 16? wow, what a great business mind you are! MLSE should hire you! …dope.
Do the math on averaging just one extra round per season in the Matthews era. Give you a hint it pays for Matthews and Nylander's next contracts in full.
@@Roller11111You guys forget they run 5 teams and not just the leafs, it isnt all about the leafs. As long as they make nore than last year they dont care. If the leafs somehow get to rd 3 or finals, then next year exit rd one again, they will see the team lost money from prior year, and then probably try to trade matthews. Until they fire shanny, this is how i feel MLSE runs things. It might be a curse to go deep in the playoffs, leafs need to be run by a different organization. Good luck with that.
Steve Im 65 and have seen 3 or 4 of these so called change over or new beginnings. They are a snow job dude, the corporate structure and greed for money caused the demise and crappy image of the leafs. I known you make a living of talking and rarely say anything definitive but more of the same buddy. Mario
As always, an excellent summary. No problems with Shanahan remaining to the end of his contract. If Leafs win next year maybe he gets a new contract. My expectation is Marner and Tavares will not waive their no trade and will be back next year. As always, there are 2 issues for the Leafs, contract negotiations and player development. Each player wants the most money AND a NMC? Really. Either you would like to be a Maple Leaf or not. When the Maple Leafs have leverage, the player still dictates all the terms. Fair compensation is a must, but it you have to know when to draw the line. Treliving has not got off to a great start with Willy's deal, but it might get better. The Leafs are the team that always trade their draft picks like they have a drug addiction. Let's get to the model Shanahan originally suggested, draft and develop. I think our development is there, but our Leafs absolutely LOVE trading picks for a whole lotta of nothing. If we do not get to the conference final next year at a minimum, Shanahan, Treliving and the entire management team need to be changed.
On the bright side I've been watching Easton Cowan play in the playoffs and this guy is going to be something special. He can fill a hole on the skill side in the future.

Alright it’s been fun as a bruins fan watching you in shambles the past couple weeks. That’s probably the last vid I watch til we face off again next year so thanks for the laughs!!
What I have learned of my time wirkung in Marketing IS... Never trust anything someone of Marketing IS saying 😅🤷🏻♂️
The decision to keep Shanny IS mindblowing to me. IT Shows you, in my opinion it is Not about Winning... The sentence about "WE are Not here to sell tickets ..." Is just smart marketing
This is a better breakdown than the press conference! For 1, we can hear this! Lol
Anybody out there actually think you can install GRIT, GUTS, a WORK ETHIC in a bunch of millionaires??? 😂😂😂
Austin was sick and he still came back to play and don't tell me he had a cold or food poisoning. That is grit.
Guys that win the cup are also millionaires, they just have fans that don't see them as godlike before winning anything so they need to prove it.
I recall several identical news conferences from the Maple Leafs in 1984, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1999, 2004 when I stopped being a Leafs fan. 2024 news conference - blah blah blah.
This right here. 2019 was it for me, I still pay attention to the news cause let’s face it it’s a train crash you can’t look away from.
Good one, agreed with all your points, thanks for giving voice to the concerns of us Leafs fans.

…..was he the owners son-in-law? 😂
Just the fact that Shanahan still has a job proves that they are not serious
I'm surprised Shanahan is still employed there. It's been 10+ years. His fingerprints are all over this team. His influence has allowed this culture to continue.
If he isn't fired, then the Leafs will not move on past the "failures" label that has been put on them, by their own actions.
I had someone point out to me recently that Shanahan probably didn’t fire both Dubas and Keefe last season to keep a scapegoat on hand to buy himself some time.
Good point, but it's the season they finally made the 2nd round, I think most fans were expecting a run back. The contracts, though, were surprising.
My heart sincerely goes out to you all. Somehow , the nightmare has worsened. Just omg.
Are Leafs moving to Major League Hockey?
Nothing is changing lol. Mitch won't waive, Willy, Mo and Mathews all just reupped.
Its going to be another year of the same before we see changes.
I think it’s very possible marner waives; clear to me he doesn’t want to be a leaf.
Leafs window will close next year but reopen in 2 years. Marner and Tavares will come off the books . Easton Cowan will come up. Treliving will build a strong big d line and get a more physical team.
why wouldn't mitch waive lol it's basically a guaranteed extension for him at a great number
@@AHFP29 Mitch ain't waiving his father will not let that happen trust me . They are all about self and not team. Secondly , his value is low right now with his playoff performance and ending the season with an injury. His dad and agent will want him to build up his stock, kinda like Nylander prior to signing his extension. Nylander was the best player in the planet , signed his desk dnd came back down to earth .
@@peaceonearth7142 this is a shockingly dumb take. Willy’s pace was effectively unchanged after the contract, only really dipping when he was moved to a limited third line role towards the end of the season. Mitch knows he isn’t getting extended here - he can facilitate a trade to a market he wants + sign his $12-$13M extension for seven years this summer. Mitigates any risk of going into a contract year without a deal… he’s not going to go through this season without a contract and risk a massive injury or an off season lmaoooo.
How many years you been saying this, kid?
Been waiting on change since '14..and realistically since '94..ive been a diehard since 93 and I feel that I will never see a Cup in this city
Great content!
Craig Berubie will have Matthews, Marner and especially Nylander crying after he lays into them.
@@BobbyBoucher228
Great points and the core 4 all perform at a way lower level every year in the playoffs.
What series did you watch? They were doing all those things the last 3 games. They just can't score and their powerplay sucked.
Steve Yzerman would pull that out. Treiliving will more likely get fleeced like he was in Calgary. A mediocre GM with nothing to show for.
he LEafs do not have to get VALUE back for Marner in a trade .The VALUE is the Cap space that they gain ( a couple of " cant miss" defence prospects and a 1st round pick would do it ) .As long as we waives and you get his cap hit off the books that is the name of the game .The UFA pool this summer is full of guys that have been absolute BEASTS in the playoffs recently ( Montour ,Marchesault,Stamkos ,Reinhart and Toffoli just to name a few ) One or more of these guys on the Leafs could carry them over the playoff hump
Exactly. Freeing up Cap Space with a Marner move is all the Leafs require. Marner can walk in a year with no return, let's just move that up by a full season.
Great coverage!
How long until the premiere of Brendan Shanahan: An Era Wasted?
With a foreword by UrinatingTrees.
Doing the hard, dirty thing, is FIRING Shanahan. Get it done!
13:59 he probably means Toronto wants to get a top-tier goon/enforcer like the Rangers did by picking up Rempe
Brad Treliving talking about hard sexy things is hilarious.

Somehow Toronto will have to get a better defenseman.
looks like good times ahead for this guy. Go Habs Go!!!!!!!!!!
If Rod Brind'Amour becomes available i think he would be a great fit with the leafs
Brendan Shanahan is somehow under the same union as Angel Hernandez

Just watch shanahan get a contract next season after second round.
At this point the only way to salvage the Leafs is to completely change the franchise. Name, logo, colors, everything.
The heritage of failure is too heavy a curse.
I told you Steve !!! For the past 2 years I said the Leafs will not win a Stanley Cup until John Tavares is traded.

Im 65 and have seen 3 or 4 of these so called change over or new beginnings. They are a snow job dude, the corporate structure and greed for money caused the demise and crappy image of the leafs. I known you make a living of talking and rarely say anything definitive but more of the same buddy.

Y'all can stop trying to be first. The NSFW bots will beat you to it. 😂
