Hey guys, I made this video is response to the many emails and messages I've received of late from aspiring Interior Designers/Decorators. Please comment below letting me know if you found it helpful and if you'd like more of this content. Part 2 will be uploaded this weekend.
I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeedeeeed this vidéo as an interior designer that is currently building ...well my own agency. Thank you so much(especially in my case for the imposter syndrom !)
interior design encompasses a broader scope that includes both aesthetics and functionality. Interior designers not only consider the visual aspects but also the practicality and functionality of a space. This involves space planning, optimizing layouts for usability and flow, considering lighting and acoustics, selecting materials for durability and sustainability, and sometimes even designing custom furniture or fixtures. In essence, while interior decorating is about beautifying a space, interior design goes deeper into creating functional, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing environments that meet the needs and preferences of the occupants. Not all people can be an interior designer like you think. It’s not that easy. Coming from a student in interior design and architecture.
Hi Gemma, I like your style and I personally do have an advanced Diploma in Interior Design and Decoration - a 3 year course in Australia. and I am not sure if you or anyone else is aware of this but I certainty didn't before I did my studies. the job description of an Interior Designer and Interior Decorator are quite different. in short, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design. There is so much that a lot of people may not think of if you aren't a qualified interior designer in your country. In terms of creating a space with a blank canvas (aka empty house) this includes designing from scratch a kitchen space, bathroom space, selecting all of the tiles, flooring, cabinetry etc for each space and when selecting these materials you check with your countries building codes (Residential or Commercial), to make sure they are to standard, a lot of the supplier websites will tell you what the materials are made with and if it's suitable for that space but it's good to double check. Before going into the space I have to do research on the house location and area it is located in, I have to look at exhibiting floorplans and work along side architects and plumbing, electricity contractors if there needs to be any interior changes to make the space more functional etc so I can create a space best suited for the client and then doing a design/client brief where I sit with the client and I write down every little detail that they are telling me, colours, fabrics, styles they like, how they want their kitchen to function, getting an idea on their day-to-day living. Because for me, I can design it but I don't live in it so I need to make sure I am giving them exactly what their lifestyle needs are for them to get the best benefits of their space. All of these things are just a small sneak peak into what a qualified Interior Designer is/does, whereas the actual decorating/styling side is the very last thing that I do in a project. Of course there are self-taught Designers who call themselves Interior Designers, the only problem with this I see in the industry is it can create a lot of confusion for the general public because the self-taught way is not what a qualified interior designer actually does. Please do not take this personally, I am not attacking you at all, I feel you had some great tips in there as I am about to venture into starting a Interior Design business soon (hopefully one day a proper design firm) and I will be doing even more studies and learning to gain better knowledge for my field that I will be working/designing in and I agree with what you said to not give your services out for free. Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful day/night wherever you are in the world :)
This is actually super informative, Thank you for this. I am wanting to what I would've called before reading your comment 'interior design' but I guess 'interior decorating' for better use of term. If you truly are passionate about what you're doing/want to do you'll truly embrace learning something new everyday-- Again, thanks for that.
She made a previous video stating clearly that she is not an interior designer but would call herself an interior decorator. She is one of the most honest vlogers I know in this field. Unpretentious...not common...
hey I'm a graduate architect and I want to specify in the interior designing. and this is the first vid. i fell on, hopefully you're gonna part of my interior designing successful journey . thank you Gemma
It is the feeling we seek: a comfortable, cosy 's our home, our friends, our guests, and it is important how we feel is the reason I am completely redesigned my house and gave me an entirely new are truly the best!
Very good info, great advice. I jotted it down and have to say, I have taken great pics that others are starting to see my work and even asked for my help. So hoping to land real clients soon. Thanks so much. This really helped me continue to do some of the steps you mentioned and add the ones I have not. Love and blessings
I learnt so much from you. I am starting up, and it's not easy to get good content that makes good sense. I enjoyed listening to you. Your advice was spot on. I'll listen again and again to get it. I have starting writing my concept and should kick off by July 2023. Thanks alot.❤
Dear Gemma thanks for your tips! I also dont have design background and thought of doing free work/projects in the beginning to get a portfolio. My question is, where did you find clients for whom you did your free projects, did you make some sort of advertising or how did you get the respective nework and clients? Thank you so much 😊
Hi Gemma, I’m currently working a junior designer role at an interior design company. Although I still have a long way to go I would love to own my own interior firm one day. One thing that I would like to know is do you stick to purely designing? Or do you also execute the fit out and technical drawings as well as procurement? The business I currently work for has an employee for each role so I was wondering if that was the same for other interior design businesses. I’m also concerned that I might not be getting that experience on the technical side, is it an essential part of business or do you leave procurement up to the clients after you have put together a shopping list for them?
So I upholster chairs and sofa and I sell throw pillows but what do I categorize or title myself in this biz. Upholster or interior or interior designer?
Hi new subbie! I’m here to learn everything there is to know about having a business with interior decorating. Is there a difference is cameras? I’ve never had a camera in my life and is trying to find out exactly everything I need .
Hi Gemma, Thanks for the good advice. You are just a little hard to understand because of the background music. Also, I can not find the info for the lens and camera. Could you tell us again?

@@missionrestopia Exactly, the people that think they know what a designer does when in reality is far from the truth.
