To me, the neatest thing about being down by the finish line during Top Fuel and Fuel Funny Car runs is being able to hear the superchargers whine as the cars get nearer! Near the start line, the exhaust sound drowns everything out!
Lived near Ravenswood raceway, back when was a kid, we were about 10km away, on those hot summer nights, the top fuellers and funnies lit up the sky in the evening with the most guttural roar for mere seconds echoing across the land. What a place to live, what an amazing memory I have to this day, I car still hear it in my ears and my heart.
People that haven’t been there or don’t get drag racing at this level will never understand how absolutely spectacular a Top Fuel car is, how top notch these pit crews are and the almost superhuman reflexes these drivers have. If you see it up close once, you’ll never forget it. I was spoiled growing up living 40 min from Raceway Park in Englishtown NJ. We had a super fast track here and there was always something to do there on the weekends, swap meets, shows, motocross, run your own car etc. It’s still there but they don’t drag anymore. What a shame. That was such a great time out. Very family oriented and patriotic. The NHRA really lost out letting that go.
Went to my first top fuel race a few weeks ago. I can’t believe I waited 58 years to see it. The most awesome display of mechanical power I’ve ever seen.
Ive been lucky enough to go to two NHRA events, and nothing beats the sounds of the funny cars and top fuel. It shakes your entire body while blowing your ear drums if you are not ready for it.
I'm impressed by the guys standing no more that 8-10 feet away from the lauch of these monsters seemingly without hearing protection (small foam plugs at the best or maybe "finger in the ear"). I bet we are talking 150-153 decibels.... (hell , even more - I see NHRA says 150dB at 50 feet... )
It is terrifying and exciting to watch these cars go by! And it feels like all of your guts are going to be shaken out too! I would recommend this, visiting a drag strip, for anybody.
Did you know the flames you see is not fuel burning, it is the hydrogen split molecules from humidity in the surrounding air. Also the engines are only expected to turn 3 thousand total revolutions before needing rebuilt. (9,000 rpm for 4 seconds))

Back in the day I would stand where the beams are at the finish line then they were going 220mph. I can't imagine doing that today where 340mph is around the corner. 🤯 220 was brutal enough, you could feel the heat and the concussion wave that would slam your body. If you didn't open your mouth to equalize the pressure and have good hearing protection it would certainly blow your eardrum s out of your skull. At 63 yrs young my bucket list has an Nhra nitro night All over it 😋🤘💥 Once you witness it your hooked for life. ❤
Roughly 10000 to 12000 or more horsepower out of a 500 cubic inch V8. The power is only an estimate as there is no dyno that could handle that much power.
You would literally be blown away. You feeling it as much as you see it. The Nitro is noxious as all get out, and like a thousand onions have been peeled right under your nose. Your bones rattle, and the sound is indescribably loud. Nothing accelerates quicker or faster than a top fuel/funny car. They hit 100 mph before they have travelled their 25 foot length(.08 seconds). I have attended the races since 1970, but not so much in the past few years. Once you have been, you will be hooked.
google the run ,and you will see Schumackers 4.426 -1320 ft et with the top speed back before the 1000 ft change .now a days top fuel would be running 4.20s at over 345mph in the 1320 track
No, as top speed is limited by the rules. In a good run, a Top Fueler maxes out near the 1000 ft mark, so there's is no point in racing another 320 ft.
That pass by Larry Dixon driving for team Rapisarda int motorsports will go down in history as the Australian national 1/4 mile Top Fuel record, now that 1000ft top fuel has taken over.

I used to live in Hamilton, New Zealand which is close to the champion dragway in Mere mere. You could stand at the side barrier and watch the top fuel dragsters. The burn out was impressive, the slicks would expand as they were burning rubber. The smell of the fuel and rubber was unforgettable, the sound from the engine was immense. Then it was back up and get ready to race, you could wander into the pits and watch the crews pull the engine down and reassemble in time for the next run, that was impressive to watch. Nothing beats cubic inches like more cubic inches. 👍🏎️

My teenage son walked to near the finish line to see what 300 MPH looked like at a 1/4-mile track. He said it was fast.

Although, the track isn't 1/4 mile, but 1000 foot. They shortened the track due to the high risk of fatal crashes at those high speeds.
