The wind noise combined with that view of flames, smoke and embers made it seem like some kind of apocalypse! That fire was a beast that didn't want to be tamed at all.
Fantastic coverage and video, John! That roof angle was something else; gave a whole different picture than street level and, for sure, lets people see what the members were having to go through to try to beat this thing.
If you don't have a mask, my friend, you need one. I couldn't have been anywhere near that area with all that smoke.
Please, be safe out there. Thank you for doing all this and bringing us the excellent vids.

Thank God there were no major injuries, but damn, it really sucks to loose your neighborhood supermarket. You take it for granted, you just walk a few blocks , you go in , they have every thing you need , you know the place like the back of your hand, you know where everything is, you know all the cashiers because you see them almost every day. And now it's gone.

John, great video you have posted. You always get the best shots and angles.
I worked in an old 1900’s 2-story wood grocery store in my youth. The upstairs was the town meeting/dance hall and all the compressors for the refrigerators and freezer cases were down in the basement. Some were so old they were still ammonia charged units. An electrical short could cause havoc in a confined area like that, not to mention the toxic fumes if the ammonia units were breached.
May have been a cause of this one as not much else would be down there. Extra grocery stock would most likely be in the back of the ground floor as it would be a pain to move between floors during shelf restocking
    Stay safe!

First of all, John, your dedication to documenting these blazes awesomely shines through in your willingness to brave dense clouds of smoke and flying embers. Naturally neither you nor the firefighters have any real say about the strength and direction the wind happens to be blowing from at any given fire, so everyone deals with it as best they can!
One thing that always stands out to me in these hard-to-fight fires which you have so ably documented is how much destruction THE ACT OF PUTTING OUT THE FIRE ITSELF contributes to the RUINATION of the very buildings the member firefighters are all working so bravely and hard to save. Between smashing windows to ventilate smoke and pouring hundreds upon thousands of gallons of water under very high pressure into the building at every fire-reachable point, there often isn't much left of most of these buildings but a ruined heap of charred and/or water-soaked wreckage after all has been said and done. It's a 'Perfect Storm' of fire, water and smoke damage.
I know the firefighters have no choice but to get at the seat or seats of a fire as fast as possible, and there's nothing that matters more, really, than putting out the fire, preventing it from spreading to "exposures" on all sides, evacuating all residents and workers from fire buildings, and CONSTANTLY keeping a vigilant eye on the safety of all member firefighters at all times. It's very sad, though, to realize that, after all this enormous effort has been put into extinguishing the vast majority of these larger three-, four- and five-alarm fires, there is often not much left of the buildings themselves but empty, ruined shells. For example, just about every shop in a fire-ravaged "Taxpayer" row of sidewalk-fronting businesses which firefighters must break into to fight a blaze is, as a result, put out of commission. Talk about the great need for having a good fire-insurance policy!
Thank you for making these dramatic fire-fighting videos. You are helping us viewers to see that it is far more cost-effective to PREVENT rather than to have to EXTINGUISH a fire!

@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 I'd never even thought of there being a significant difference between what causes white and black smoke until this video. I was flabbergasted by that astronomical amount of solid white smoke!! Never seen anything like it!! It looked more like white clouds had fallen from the sky and landed on earth!!

Sometime in the future maybe you could cover the what the “ Command “ looks like and how “Command “ keeps track of equipment and man power. You see the command set up In This video, they have an iPad on the table and a box they open and it had paper notes as well as different colored chits. It look like a something they would use the term “ouija board”. I have no idea if there is much to cover on the command but I know nothing. Nice work thanks for your time to make the videos.

Supermarket fires always seem to be very rough. I recall a particularly tragic one many years ago in the Bronx. Looks like this one got a strong foothold down in the basement, took it's time down there and then finally came upstairs looking for more fuel. It was really pushing a lot of smoke. It got very dramatic with the wind blowing that dense smoke around along with all those hot glowing brands. As always, great footage and be careful.

Very dangerous fire . With high winds the fires flow path can change or parts of the building can change such as walls, windows and cockloft.. if you are in the wrong place you have seconds to live , when the flow path changes. That is the reason they pulled everyone out before you had exterior signs of fire. If I were to guess the injuries were probably caused by the flow path issues. I’ve been there, damn dangerous to be inside that building. Thanks again for great videos.

Have they ever considered keeping a car floor jack and Wheel dollys in a truck to move a car away from a hydrant? Granted it’s faster to smash a window if need be, or can they use the bumper of a engine to shove the car a bit away so they can hook up?
