    Thanks for showing this. I actually tried one of those tools in the home improvement store with their own lights and it only worked about 25% of the time, so I didn't buy it. Why would a set of lights with 3 or 4 wires still not be able to stay lit with a bad bulb(LED)? You would think it would be easier than all this! I have old style sets of incandescent C7's that have only 2 wires and other than replacing a bad fuse when necessary, they just work, and you can see the bad bulb when it dies. I thought the whole idea behind 3 or 4 wire strands is that you shouldn't need to do this?

    I have a wreath with 50 LED lights on it. 2 seasons in use and some have burned out. What I did was pulled one bulb, went to walmart and looked at the bulbs in an LED 50 set. SAME shape socket. I bought the string for $3+, took some of these bulbs from string to repair my wreath and all is good. Instead of buying a pack of 5 bulbs for $6. I have plenty of spare bulbs now. fyi; these LED bulbs are 3.2 volts/.064 watts.

    Watched video and went to Menards and purchased LED Keeper. Two strands fixed in less than 10 minutes. Be sure to squeeze the trigger hard enough to pierce the wires when testing.

    I was so pissed because mine wasn't working, the light strands would turn on and then off sporadically. Turned out one of the sockets was shorting out the two light connections inside. The wire nut worked great!

    I have a pre lite tree with LED bulbs, they go on and off, not blink, they may stay on for a hour or two or be off for a hour, can't find the problem...any help with this would be great

  • @MrSbfan2000
    @MrSbfan2000 7 років тому +4

    Use caution eliminating bulbs from LED sets. LEDs are voltage sensitive and whenever one is lost either by burnout or cutting it out, the voltage it was using is dispersed to the remaining LEDs. Not much of a problem for one bulb but the more that are not burning for one reason or another the brighter AND shorter the others burn and the faster and faster you will lose more bulbs, until COMPLETE failure. ALWAYS replace burnt out LEDs and I don't recommend cutting them out of series either.

    • @knowhereman1
      @knowhereman1 7 років тому

      Excellent point! The same is true for incandescent series light sets. I learned the hard way by having to replace every bulb in entire sections on a pre-lit tree. Now I'm vigilent when it comes to replacing burned out bulbs.

    • @meeekstubbular
      @meeekstubbular 5 років тому

      I was just going to ask about it as I suspected it's the case. The less bulbs the more 'stress' on the remainings, seems logical. Now, bypassing, works till too many die. But if I was going to take a working one from another non removable 'dead' set I guess it would be hard to make it well isolated including from the weather but how would I know if they are the same voltage? I also know U T is notorious for not replying to most questions. Actually not UT but those who post on it. So maybe i'll get an answer :)

    • @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel
      @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel  7 років тому

      Hi, do you have this on a timer? I've heard of problems with timers, dimmers or controls not being compatible with some LED string lights.

    • @MrSbfan2000
      @MrSbfan2000 7 років тому

      Water has gotten into 1 or more sockets and has changed the resistance in that section. It MAY correct itself when it drys out or it may totally burn out from corrosion. Timers are fine with LEDS as long as it is and ON/OFF ONLY timer.

    There are not Bulbs but LED's .. A bulb (as such) has a filament .. an LED an Anode and Cathode. My experience on using LED lights (despite saying suitable for oudoors) is that water/moisture gets into the solidered connections on the LED's and they quickly corrode. Got only 2 Christmas (about 40hrs use) out of 1/ 200 (expensive) string set before 30 failed through corrosion. (not worth repairing) Unless there is a good tight waterproof seal on the connection to the LED's forget about using them outdoors (despite the makers claim)

      I purchased philips LED lights and most did not fully last two seasons. I had to replace all of my incandescent lights due to a lightning strike. Fast forward a couple years and many sets have lost half the string or the entire string is out. I purchased the light keeper pro and watched many videos on how to repair them but the device didn't help and was a further waste of money. I have not been able to be put one string back out. I tested the fuses and every light bulb and still could not restore half the string. I currently have both light keeper pro devices.
      The incandescent lights were so much easier to use and about a third to half of the cost. I would not recommend philips lights to anyone.

    Question, I have a pre-lit Christmas tree with LED bulbs. The bulbs can be set to all white, or multi-colour. The same bulb changes colour. So..one branch of lights works perfectly when set to white, but when I set it to multi-colour, it wont work. Any suggestions as to what the problem is and how to fix it? Weve only had the tree 3 weeks..it worked fine..all of a sudden, this! Helllp! thanks

      Hi! Thanks for getting back to me. Its a GE pre-lit LED Alaskan Flocked 7.5' tree. It has 8 multi-function lights choices. It came with extra bulbs and breakers. Today. I took a new bulb..and tried every bulb on the affected branch. Finally found the culprit! Yay! What had me baffled was that all the light bulbs worked on that branch on the white selection. When I put it to multi-colour, the whole branch was out. How can a bulb work on white, but not on colour? I really appreciate your quick response! Thanks again!

    Hello sir! Great video. I just discovered my GE G35 LED Christmas lights went in to a permanent dim. They still work, but greatly dimmed. It's a sting of 25 and they were very expensive when purchased. Do you think this device (the LED Keeper), can diagnose the problem I described? Please help!

    It looks to me like this tester is piercing the insulation on the wires to inject power into the string. This is not a good practice. Especially for outdoor LED lights. You should never damage the wiring insulation of ANY 120 volt powered device.

    • @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel
      @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel  7 років тому

      Hi, how old is the light set. Did you try pushing in all the bulbs just to make sure they are making contact. If you pull one out, is there rust on the metal wires on the base of the led? Sometimes this will cause a string to stop working.

      I have a LED prelit Christmas Tree and one small strand won't light up. I have changed all the bulbs and it still won't work. Will this tool help me out on the tree? Is it possible that that line that is out had gone bad. The tree is 3 years old, The rest of the tree works fine.

    • @darkhorse9472
      @darkhorse9472 6 років тому

      Ricky White- I would definitely try it. I had the same problem...one branch out and we only had our tree 3 weeks. I tested each bulb myself (used a new bulb) till I found the culprit! Make sure the bulbs are in tight..they "snap" in. If this hadn't worked, I would have definitely used the device in this video. Good luck!
